What bothers me about this is that everybody is an expert on what this girl's body should look like. She may have a problem of some sort ... or maybe she just is who she is.

My daughter is somewhat tall and very thin (5'7" and 100 lbs.). It's a family trait, and she comes by it naturally. Her cousins have the same body build, and they have also been the targets of unwanted scrutiny. So I wonder if maybe this girl isn't telling the truth. You can feel about it however you like. Some may find it attractive; others may be repulsed by it. But unless you actually know this person, I wouldn't be too quick to judge.

Just as being heavy can be a source of self-consciousness for some people, being extremely thin can also cause problems. From a mother's point of view, it is very painful to have a daughter say that she feels ugly because she is too skinny. People are individuals, and some can fall outside of the "norm" and still be healthy. What matters to me is that our daughter has the stamina to swim competitively and live an active life. Incidentally, the cousin does too.

"Why don't you feed that girl!"; "Someone throw her a sandwich!" ; ""Dayyum that bitch is skinny!" ... These are comments our daughter has gotten from complete strangers. We've also had people come right up and ask if she has an eating disorder (not unless a hollow leg counts!). So please consider that this girl may be getting unfairly slammed.

I think she is too skinny but as long as no one put a gun to her head and it was her choice I have no problem with it.

Really is time for people to butt out of trying to make others into what they think they should be.

In high school, I ate 6 times a day and could NOT gain weight. I received rude comments all the time about how I needed to eat more and stop starving myself. It wasn't anything I had control over but was certainly eating enough.

My best friend, on the other hand, was always battling her weight and would go entire days without eating and people thought she was healthy. Looks are NOT an indicator of eating disorders.

She says she eats all day. Leave her alone. If you don't like how she looks, go look at someone you do enjoy looking at.

that is EXACTLY what i thought when i looked at the picture. beautiful face, but she looks gaunt. i have a friend who is 5-8 ish, and she has always been naturally thin, but like 130 pounds thin. this whole, oh, her heritage is always naturlally very thin crap is garbage, just someone who doesn't want to question the status quo. i would force feed any of my friends if they looked like that, good lord! it's one thing to be in shape and be thin but have muscle tone. she has none. she just has bones. makes me sad.

There is a difference between being skinny and being a really unhealthy weight. People tell me all the time that I'm really skinny, and this model is 2 inches taller than me and about 15 pounds lighter than me. Her BMI is extremely low, which means she is at risk for serious illnesses due to her weight. Being underweight is just as unhealthy as being overweight; that is why these designations exist. In response to your question,"what is the size we all should be???," the answer is this: keep your BMI in the healthy range, the reason the BMI was developed was to let people know what weight range is healthiest for their height, and this is based on scientific studies, not a subjective opinion of attractiveness.

Ummm, I am considered thin being 5'3 and 110 pounds so I can see my toes and I do not find this woman attractive in any aspect. With a bmi of barely 15 she is considered anorexic. At her height a healtheir wieght would be 130 lbs which would make her much more beautiful. She needs help.

scientific fact:

regardless of our opinion on what is beautiful or not, a body mass Index of less than 20 is unhealthy. hers is 15.1, that is EXTREME malnourishment. period.

maybe this girl has a digestive disorder, eating disorder, or other medical condition causing this. We don't know. regardless all of these are medically treatable.

I'm skinny at 5'2" and weigh in more than weeden at 117lbs and I'm called skinny and told to eat a sandwich on a regular basis. I have some junk in my trunk and love my small woman curves. Let me tell you, this Naumoska woman is beautiful, yes, but she truely is malnurished and she will be stunning when she puts on 15-20 healthy pounds.

No one is against "skinny" but there is such a thing as WAAAAAAAAAAY too skinny. And this is coming from someone who is 6'0" tall and has weighed everything from 128 to 310!! I used to be a model and my modeling weight was 128 and I am an inch tallerthan her! No one would hire me any thinner...so how can she be OK?? I can't think of one legitimate person in "the biz" who would hire her nor any PROFESSIONAL model who would want to look THAT skinny.

The sad thing is, she seemingly did this intentionally, because if you chek out her website on modelmayhem, she lists at 117 pounds and the other photos of her show her with boobs, and hips and thighs that are far more fleshy. she actually looks healthy and very pretty! No jutting bones, no sign of illness or eating disorder. She needs to look in the mirror and realize she pushed it too far!

This young woman does not have a usable muscle in her body. Maybe she is so thin because she does not have the strength to pick up a fork with even lettuce on it. I would be scared to even touch her arm for fear it would break. I have NEVER seen anyone that thin NATURALLY.

I am naturally thin at 5 foot 6 and 105 lbs but my bones don't stick out. You can be healthy with a bmi of under 20 if you are naturally that way. I get a clean bill of health from my doc every year and can't gain a pound even though I want to. From the pic I don't think she was born that way...too bony.

She may not be anorexic but she certianly isn't healthy. She is malnourished. Her body is starving and she looks like a holocaust victim. No one is saying she needs to go to Mcdonalds and become obese and clog her arteries... that wouldn't be healthy either. They are saying that we shouldn't promote the malnourished look because little girls look up to her and are going to starve themselves to look like they are starving... doesn't make sense.

I am aware there are many naturally skinny people. My best friend's sister ate all the time, and was 5'10" and 120 pounds in high school. Some (lucky) people are really naturally skinny. But that's not the case here.

As a model/beauty pageant contestant, she certainly DOES care about what she eats and what people think of her body. She's aware of every single morsel of food she eats, every calorie she consumes, every moment she's working out and exactly how many calories she burns. (It looks like all aerobic excercise too, since she doesn't even have any muscle!) Seriously, contestants don't pay thousands for teeth whitening and evening gowns and not pay attention to what they eat!

1mama - when I was in my 20s I went dancing all the time and didn't eat constantly either. I was a size 4 (US). I was strong and healthy. My bones weren't sticking out. Her body is not the result of normal youthful activity and lifestyle.

People are being very critical that "this is what beauty has come to." I don't think that's the case at all. Very few people would strive to be so thin. This girl cannot see her body for what it is. To everyone who says "Ick", and "Ewww", and "Get her a Sandwich" - criticizing doesn't promote a healthy body image. It just makes you look judgmental. Would you say that to her face, if she was someone you cared about? She has to see it for herself, and she will only come to that realization with support, not insults.

No 1mama you would not look like that. the lifestyle you are suggesting, (dancing exercising, generally being active,) builds muscle, this girl has none. there are conditions that can cause this EXTREME malnourishment other than eating disorders. We dont know which her problem is, but it is a problem and she needs medical attention Quickly!

I was rail-thin at 20. I looked pretty much like this gal. I tried my best to gain weight but couldn't. People made fun of me.

So give this girl a break! Maybe she is just a skinny person. And, in 30 years, she is probably going to have a totally amazingly healthy body (like I do now) and will be eating to her heart's content!

I'm so glad as I was skinny as a kid. My coworkers and family members who are my age are, simply, obese. But not me.

Well, the more I think about it, I guess thre is one conceivable way that she could be this thin without starving herself or vomitting....she could have one hell of a tapeworm!!!!!!!

I think it complete indifference to her suffering to say that we should "lay off the kid". I only comment because I care. I hate to think that because of our obsession with beauty and thinness that this poor girl, barely more than a child at 19, is starving herself for that ideal. We as a society owe it to our children to see healthy as beautiful. It is a disgrace for us to turn the other way and make stupid comments like I was that thin when I was dancing all the time. I do not believe it in her best interest nor of the girls who would pattern themselves after her. 15 BMI is not healthy and I don't believe it her natural weight. We should care more about the girl and her health.

I'm not trying to be rude, but yes, I would look like that....(just add 20 years) how do I know? Because I was once 5'8" and 107pounds.  Why?  Because I was not only a dancer, cheerleader, then international model... -in Australia nonetheless as well as everywhere else; I also walked to ALL my go sees (audtitions)  I am now 175 pounds and again, when I excersize, I lose the wieght.  After having kids, I had the same diet as I did when I was a model but put on weight.  Why?  because I wasn't active and my metabolism changed.  I had an extremely fast metabolism and could not keep weight on when I was a kid.  Now that I'm in my forties I eat less than I did as a model, and it's very difficult to lose the wieght. 

Here's the deal, should every kid look like that?  No, but if they do and it's NOT because of startvation then why be a jerk about it?  Just leave her alone. 

Did anyone bother to ask her what she eats, if she eats?  I doubt it.  Did they look at her parents to see how they're built?  I doubt that too. 

Saying this girl's condition is OK because other people are fat is ridiculous. Too much weight and too little weight are both health problems.

1mama... you rare kidding right? You really need to take a second look... if you want to look like that go for it... hopefully someone in your family will care enough to get you help if you do. And who is suggesting McDonald burgers and fries - nutrition period is what this young woman needs. This isn't thin, this is pathetic... and one can only hope she has family that will make sure she gets the help she needs....

I do not take your comments as rude, quite to the contrary, I welcome intelligent debate. We can disagree without stooping to rudeness.

I, as a dietician, find it difficult (though not impossible) to believe that you looked like this girl based on the history you gave. I dont claim to know everything,but I do have considerable experience in this area. I can certainly believe that you were thin, even very thin. I however have never seen a dancer or otherwise very active person, that had no muscle definition at all. as someone else stated on here profesional runners tend to be very thin, but have clearly defined muscle mass. this girl is malnourished, period. her state is unhealthy, period.

Now unlike others, i do not claim this is her own fault! It may well not ber her fault. We weren't given enough Info to diagnose her with an eating disorder! nor enough to diagnose other NON-intentional medical conditions. Bottom line, whatever the reason, she needs medical attention.

I would very much like to see a photo of you from the years you refer too. Mostly because i feel quite sure that as active as you were, you had at least some muscle shape. In fact, if you had no muscle shape, it would be very hard for you to have been as active as you were. the body needs a certain amount muscle to accomplish these tasks. Or if all is as you claim you would have been very very tired, and very very sore all the time.

I am in no way knocking the kid. I wish her all the best in her life and her career. I also hope for her sake that she is NOT doing this to herself, as the physical conditions are much easier to treat than mental ones.

I can say from my 12 years experience in dietetics, that 8 or 9 of every 10 girls (and guys) in this condition, have some form of eating disorder. There are of course exceptions to evey rule.

Okay, well, as a dancer myself, I can say with 100% confidence that ANY woman doing a healthy activity such as dancing would have more muscle tone than this woman. What happens when ballerinas become anorexic and get this thin? They get kicked out of the company because they can no longer perform as true athletes should (and dancers are athletes).

Those numbers are not common as you surmise. However, I did have a problem gaining and maintaining weight and everyone thought I was doing drugs or had an eating disorder. Turns out I had a severe digestive problem. It's since been corrected and I'm still a little on the slender side but not to the point of looking like a Holocaust victim. However, the difference between me and someone with an eating disorder? I KNEW I was too thin, looked terrible, and I certainly didn't enter any beauty contests! If someone is extremely thin and still thinks they look okay you've got a body image problem on your hands and most likely they have an eating disorder. So the rule of thumb is not just seeing someone who's really thin, but finding out what they think of how they look.

i think this whole thing is ridiculous. I am 5'8 and wiegh 96 lbs. i am a skinny female. I have a very fast metabolism and it runs throughout my family. I believe this girl could be anorexic but she could not be. she may just have a fast metabolism. I think people shouldnt judge her cause she is in a pageant either. Pageants are a great way to boost your confidence. I beleive this girl is fine and her weight shouldnt be an obstacle in the pageant. My body llooks exactly like hers. If this girl was extremely fat no one would be saying a thing.

Not only that, "really skinny" people w/o an eating disorder ACKNOWLEDGE they look too thin. If the person is incredibly thin but still justifying it you have someone who's sick. However, if they admit they are too thin and can't fix it then there is the possibility they have other health issues.

I am one of those really skinny people, without an eating disorder and there is nothing wrong with me mentally or medically. I have a 11 yr old son who is quite active and work 40 hours a week as well as maintaining a household. I am way too skinny without muscle mass and I assure you that I eat more than most people do. You can not look at someone & declare that they are anorexic or bulimic without knowing their history.
