My husband and I adopted a special needs child from China three years ago. I was 51 and he was 54. When we went to apply for another child the following year China changed their age poliicy making anyone over the age of 55 ineligible for children. We never considered invitro, finding a surrogate, or adopting an infant. We just wanted to provide love, a home, and opportunities for school-aged children -- those who are often passed over for infants and toddlers. For us this was the sensible approach to parenthood. I think the woman in this story felt she could not obtain a family in any other method than what she chose. She was certainly too old to adopt or have a child 'naturally.' I can empathize with her dilemna but don't agree with what she ultimately did. Before we pass judment, however, we must remember - NONE OF US come pre-packaged with a stamped expiration date. Just because someone successfully adopted or bore a child at a younger age, it doesn't exempt them from passing from this earth suddenly and orphaning their own child/children.

I don't agree with the option, after menopause. I know several women who went into early menopause. If asked on a application if you have gone thru menopause, you would have to answer yes. This would disqualify you from having a child, even if you were still young enough. I do believe there should be a age limit, however clearly a person in their early to mid fifties should be allowed to have a child. Elizabeth Edward's had a child the natural way at 51.

There is no guarantee that if you have your children "before menopause" that you'll live long enough to raise them. Many children don't have their parents that long, due to cancer, car accidents, or the hundreds other ways we can die. I believe she really loved those children and raised them as best as she could for as long as she could--however, short as that was. If we're going to raise questions about age limits, perhaps we should raise questions about doing these procedures at all. If it's not natural for a 66 year old woman to be made artificially pregnant, perhaps we should question if we should play against nature and help the 25 year old woman with fertility problems... Should we be messing against nature?
