Amen Sister friend! If one of these kids was taken from the bus stop we would be watching a completely different story on Today! People would be asking why these kids didn't have some one to care for them! I really think it is because the State is not receiving tax money for the less than hour care a day these kids receive. Like the state Rep. said, it takes a whole village to raise a child, but obviously there is a disgruntled or jealous neighbor who can't mind their own business!

Like someone posted earlier, it was probably a neighbor who runs a daycare and is a bit greedy to get that last dollar.

The news here in Colorado did a story last schoolyear about the bus stops. In only ONE district ( out of several in just one city) about 27 bus stops were in front of the homes of convicted Pedophiles!! I guess DHS would prefer the kids went to one of those!

What is this country coming to when we're punishing responsible adults who are protecting kids and let parents who are plainly irresponsible and couldnt care for a kid properly if their life depended on it keep their children.

Hi all, as I posted in another area, I am in the woods in Oregon and we not only have to worry about the two-legged predators, but we also have cougars and coyotes to watch out for as I know Colorado has some, too. (I've also lived in Colorado--as a single mother who was ALWAYS watched by DHS, even though I did nothing wrong other than caring for my child.) The problem I see with the whole daycare thing...someone is afraid of having money taken from their pocket because of good samaritans. Not everyone, even in a dual income household, can afford daycare. And some employers are insensitive to working parents and daycare issues.

How many bets the authorities were alerted by some jerk neighbor of hers that didn't like to hear or see children gathered near his/her home in the mornings? There's a lot of losers out there who have nothing better to do than try to make others miserable. This whole thing is so incredibly ridiculous.

If this, If that... the point is If she should turn out to be a child molester (Yes, women can be child molesters) - see a recent California case. Woman was daughter of local preacher, ran the Sunday school. She knew the child and had baby sat, cared for her before. She had children of her own, No one suspected her until it was too late. Child was molested and killed.

I was really conflicted, until the overwhelming majority immediately interjected the Stranger abduction angle into justifing why she should not obey the laws which were enacted to protect children.

Getting a license is not that much of an imposition to ask for enhanced safety of the children these parents are so eager to protect. This is a case where these mothers could take up a collection to defray the cost. After all its their kids being protected.

Its not just strangers, Its not just men - all perverts are not dirty, anti-social or drifters.

This doesn't come close to being babysitting,she is just watching the kids at a bus stop for an hour as an unpaid friend. This is an unreasonable intrusion of the state into a private person being a concerned and helpful neighbor

They don't care if she is hurting the kids...all they care about is if children are in her home that are not related to her no matter how long per day they want her to have a daycare license. They don't want to know if she is a molester...unless you are under the deluded presumption that if she were to apply for the license and were a molester she would be denied her license. FYI...a licensed daycare in my county that had been running for over 10 yrs. had just been shut down because one of the owners was moleting the small children. Most molesters dont admitt to it on the forms...You are a wack job...

Beoweolf... getting a license is not just a matter of filling in a couple forms. Your home will then be inspected by the state, you and any other adult over the age of fourteen will have to pay to have a Police check done, your insurance will go through the roof, and the home owners accociation may block you because in the fine print of your purchase agreement home businesses of that nature are forbidden.

Licensing is not a small matter and in an instance such as the one presented here it is unneccessary...

Beowulf, what do you know? Just because someone runs a licensed daycare that doesnt mean that their not a child molester. The thing about child molester's is they can be ANYBODY ANYWHERE! Even a licensed day care operator can be a child molester. My parents were married for 15 years and my step father worked for the federal prison system for 20 years and no one would have guessed my step father was a child molester, but he was. You have to be vigilant with everyone when it comes to your kids. A background check and a license does NOT gaurantee anything!!!

A responsible parent will do their very best to make sure their child is in a safe environment with or without the state's assistance and the state can only do so much to protect children from bad parents. They can't check everything anymore than anyone else can. They can't be certain who visits during the day or what this person is like if they don't have a reported background as you pointed out. Being licensed doesn't mean anything. All that means is that the PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT is acceptable and maybe the person is a lying sociopath that's great at interviews.

As for the state's involvement, they require daycares to be licensed so they can verify taxes are being paid. Otherwise, as many have pointed out, everyone who ever cares for a child would require licensing. It only takes one bad encounter after all. I don't believe 4 weeks is the magic number for the time it takes a pedophile to strike. It's based on how much money they stand to lose after a certain point.

This law doesn't need to be adjusted, it needs to be repealed. Let's be honest, how many people do you know who use an unlicensed daycare provider? And how many have you heard about DHS going after prior to this one solely for this reason? It's one thing to enforce regulations, but if this is when they choose to enforce it, it needs to go.

I and other Fathers and step-fathers have been accosted by concerned mothers who questioned whether we had any business looking at kids playing at the local park - when we watching our own kids. Laughing at it now...but, I've been "rescued" from a near riot; my stepchilds timely arrival defused a tense confrontation on several occasions, so if anyone has a right to be concerned about profiling, it is I - and it is not an academic matter of debat, its a real problem. Once the bruised egos has subsided, I was impressed that people cared enough to investigate.

Someone brought up the recent case of the young lady that was kidnapped at the bus stop, held for 18 years - where she gave birth to 2 children fathered by kidnapper/rapist. Lets see how that fact fits this incident; the no one was concerned about a stranger abduction in that case, as a matter fact, the step father was suspected of the crime and was still under suspicion - until she was found. So for 18 years he lived under suspicion, while the good people who could have been looking into the case a.) were satisfied it was the Step-dad. b.) had several opportunities to investigate the real offender, who was a known offender -yet never searched the property ... stranger still, since as a condition of his release, they had every right, no - in fact they had an obligation, by law, requiring them to ensure he had no opportunity to interact with children.

The state (as in State, county, Police, sheriffs dept) let that girl down, not to mention the children she bore for the offender. The "kicker" is - a nosey pair of civil servants, acting solely on suspicion, alerted the CPA authority to investigate why a child was clinging to a man who admitted he was an offender. Were those ladies "nosey do-gooders" butting their noses into a possibly innocent situation? Probably. In fact, it was a case of profiling and had every ear mark of bordering on inappropriate intrusion into a private family matter. Luckily, it finally resulted into the release of the kidnapped girl who was the mother of the children - shades of "Chinatown".

I repeat - the state has an obligation to enforce the law. Else, there could be more lost children slipping though the safety net. If you want to help, then send the mother the $24.00 to get the license. Then all the "i"s will be dotted, all the "t"s will be crossed and everyone can sleep safely.

What we have is not a case of casual child care, its a regular, 5-day a week appointment to house and care for a regular established group of kids. Either abide by the law, modify the law or appeal it. It doesn't matter that much which one. But to enact a law then not enforce it - or selectively enforce it, is wrong. Despite your complaints, you know the state should investigate this situation. When it comes to kids, as some of you have mentioned, its worth a little inconvenience to ensure they are as safe as possible. If she is to "care" for the kids, she shouldn't be afraid of a small amount of investigation.

So what the great government of this county is saying, is that if I have a bunch of neighborhood kids come to my house every day and play softball in my yard without their parents present, is I need a lisc. I am against changing child care laws statewide for this. I understand the opinions and it is just a bus stop. If you plan on changing state law, please use the word "bus stop". Our neighborhoods are being overrun by large organizations using state child law to their advantage. If a law is passed allowing this, organizations like CMH (MI statewide $2 billion) can possibly use it to change group foster care law through the courts. Child care is big money and big business. This could affect more than just watching children waiting for the bus. Stop oversimplifying how law is used by lawyers and large companies and recognize how this affects everyone. This person needs a license and possibly permission from the local zoning board. Be angry at the person who turned her in and not just the law.

I have a "group foster care" facility next door - in a neighborhood which requires a special permit to operate one - not having a permit but it does have a state license somehow some way. Cars are parked everywhere. It is operated by a non-profit. They are paid with tax money and statewide they are $2 billion dollars. CMH. Now that being written, you want to stop the MI state requirements for people "freinds" watching your kids? What is wrong here is people thinking that other houses are the Brady bunch and that child care isn't big business. People watch too much TV and don't even recognize a big world when they drive on the expressway...

What opening the law for this turns into is: big "non-profit" companies providing child care for a few hours - or for overnight stays anywhere they want without a special permit. They are paid by tax dollars and not a personal check. If you don't think so, you are wrong. Watch out when you get involved in changing child care law to suit something like this. I tend to think it's more along the vindictive side. There are people in neighborhoods everywhere who are fully committed to abusing the function of the police to make their neighbors miserable and waste precious police time on petty nonsense.

I share your views 100%. We have enough problems in this state without worrying about friendly neighbors watching our kids at the bus stop so we can get to work on time, those of us lucky enough to have a job in this state that is.

Its not about greed, its about the law, we, who are licensed are background checked, CPR certified, receive routine physicals and inspections; Unfortunately we have to have these laws because their are so many people out there that do day care without getting licensed and it isn't fair to the rest of us. In my state a license is only $24 for 3 yrs, that wouldn't break her! There is no law that says she has to charge her neighbors, just follow the guidelines set up to PROTECT ALL CHILDREN. She doesn't look creepy, but neither did the Sunday School teacher who allegadly committed murder recently.

It is not about the law! Since when is it OK for the state to dictate where and with whom I can leave my children? Only with people on their approved list?! The state/DHS has no right to circumvent the authority of the parents who have chosen to leave their children with someone they obviously trust. It is none of their business. I thought mandated reporters had to report suspected child abuse. I did not know that you are also suppose to report unlicensed daycares or you can be held liable. That just sounds like another one of those ridiculous laws such as not being able to let your kids go to the neighbors to play unless you are home; otherwise it is called illegal daycare. This whole thing just sounds unbelievable. Also, I can understand someone not wanting to go through the red tape just so she can help out her neighbors. You obviously haven't been in this situation b4. Many working parents leave their children with the cheapest daycare possible, but just because they are licensed doesn't mean their children are safe. This is a matter of convience and money. NO one should be able to tell you who can and can not watch your children. That law was for people taking money, not for friends doing acts of kindness.

The nosy, oh the names I want to use, person that took this to the DHS should feel enough conviction about what they did to stand up and defend themselves. But there is no defense, that is why drawing the conclusion that the person was a no good, meddling, selfish, individual is a small step.

Those "other kids" will still be standing outside at the bus stop while the original three kids stay toasty warm inside. How did getting a daycare license help the "other kids"?

This woman and the kids' moms are close friends and neighbors. They are asking her to watch over her kids while they wait for the bus in the morning.

You obviously have been left out, abused, ignored, disliked for no reason that you can discern, and have found a forum for your anxieties. Friends help friends, that's how the world works, and we could all use more of it.

As far as the children's safety is concerned, if the moms have found out all they feel is necessary for their child's safety, then the rest is none of your business. Children are hurt and abused by their parents in the "best" of homes every day, much less in the homes of others or by strangers. It is not possible to protect everyone; you have to do your best, and give the rest to God.

I think I am really bothered by the fact that you cannot let your child go over to play with a friend on a regular basis unless you are at home. I have been guilty of doing this at least once or twice a week while I was at school, worked, or ran errands. They were really good friends and we would reciprocate by having the other friend's child over during weekends while they went out. We just thought we were taking turns letting each other get a break. I had no idea this was the law in our state too.

Great comment Angel , I totally agreed . This was a private matter , an arrangement with friends , NOT THE GOVT.'S CONCERN OR BUSINESS . Since when does the govt. think it can bully itself into taking away not just our basic human rights , but tell us we can not even live anymore accordingly . An you notice how these women were smart enough to set up a neighborly effort like this all their own , between the Mom friends , it is when the govt. tries to force & meddle it's way into our lives that things are not handled efficiently . You know, I am a licensed daycare provider as well & I think this is COMPLETELY ridiculous!! She is keeping the kids inside in a safe environment for less than an hour each morning!! She is accepting no money for it & is simply being a good friend & neighbor. If those parents know this woman & trust her with their children, that is their choice. They feel that their children are safe there....or at the very least, safer than standing on the street waiting for a bus in the cold & rain & snow... This is the way it should be...the way it used to be for many working families. Good neighbors take care of each other. Somebody has a personal issue with this woman or they are a licensed provider who is looking for more money. She is doing nothing wrong. As a provider who has taken the steps to get fully licensed in my home, I see no reason why she & her family should have to do that just so these children's parents can get to work on time. In a perfect world, one parent would be able to stay home and raise their children themselves if they choose, but families have not had that option in years because cost of living is so insane. How funny, I wonder If I go to a pot luck dinner at a friends house if I need a license to serve my food.  Would I then be a caterer?  I guess we need to know the real reason why this person complained in the first place.  Was it because they thought the children were in danger; they were not being included in the circle of friends; another daycare provider who is jealous and vendictive; a parent of another child who is not friends with the other children?  I think this is completely ridiculous.  This case is probably going to cost them more money to deal with that they would get if she did pay for the license.

In the 'good ole days', people got to know their nieghbors and did rely on each other. Unfortunately, nowadays, no one takes the time to get to know or help each other. What she is doing is awesome. I wish I would have had that kind of support when my kids were younger.

Why can't she watch the kids from the window? All she would do is call the police anyway. I'm sure that any adults living in the vicinity of the bus stop are keeping an eye out for those kids already.

You must not be a parent or a you are an irresponsible parent. Jaycee Dugard was snatched from a bustop and it was witnessed by her stepfather. She was missing for 18 years. If she had had the opportunity to wait for the bus at a friend's house she would have been safe.

Get off your greedy horse and don't worry about your neighbors being decent neighbors (and they all say that they are all friends since you stuck that in your not exceptions) because it takes money out of your pocket. Reading your post I don't think you are the kind of licensed care provider I would want watching my kids.

Are you one of those people that believe children are always safe if they are with a paid "legitimate lic day care provider" and in danger when they're not? If you agree with Beoweolf's posts, I'm glad my kids aren't at your house.

John, I echo your thoughts. I don't think Beoweolf has any kids or as you said, is extremely irresponsible. I don't know how old these kids are, but assume a couple are in kindergarten or first grade. I can't imagine watching my or any young child stand next to the road...FROM THE WINDOW. Wow. so no one is allowed to help out a friend do you really think they would leave their kids with someone they dont know or that would harm their kids on purpuse get real it is less than an hour a day.

So if the neighbors who know this lady feel confident that she is capable of watching their children for a few minutes, that isn't good enough? Believe me, when it comes to deciding who watches my four children, no one, i repeat, no one knows better than ME. If i decide my neighbor, friends, etc can watch my children then thats who watches my children not who the state approves of. Stupid.

The state should make you get a license to be a busy body like you. This is stupidity and the people who started this junk should get a life. If you agree with them; then you need to join them. These people trusted this woman and its their call not the state. If this be the case, the you should have to have a license to serve your neighbors dinner when they visit lol. And a license for a play date!?!?!?! That department's response on that one just floored me.

So it sounds like my friend, who lives in MI. She babysits for her girldfriend who works at a fast food place shouldn't be babysitting for free, to help out this young mother of two toddlers. When my friend was struggling with two toddlers years ago, her girlfirend would babysit for her.

Yea I know that MI is looking for money since the state budget is in shambles. But now they are doing this to make money off the license fee??? Awful just awful.

A "licnese" does NOT gaurantee a safe place for kids. I have turned in "licensed" daycare providers I have had for my children because of neglect issues in both Colorado and Oregon. I wouldn't say I trust just any neighbor, but there are some I do and would happily have my kids go there if needed. Luckily mine are old enough now to not require daycare now. Many states need to pull their heads out and encourage us helping each other...knock it off with the d*&^ money game!!!

Nobody needs to have a license to have their own kids! Why should we have to have a license for our kids to have friends over to our house!

In the eyes of the law, she IS providing a service. Why should I have to pay for a lic, CPR, 1st aide, background check, yearly physical, be subject to spot inspections and this person not. Why because she is a "neighbor" or a friend.

My clients are all connected through friends somehow, so should I save myself the grief and start breaking the law because its convenient for me! I would love the privacy for a change.

And, no I don't live in Michigan. And, a lic only costs $24 for 3 yrs in my state!

Amazing how screwed up all this is. I wouldn't even take my kids to a licensed day care because it's not like I personally know these people. Sometimes the most horrible people attend church...do you trust them just because they attend and act like they're someone? No you wouldn't right? So what says you'd trust someone who has a piece of paper saying they can watch children? Granted they are CPR certified which is great. But how are they qualified to make drastic decisions? No one can be qualified...ever. People can never be perpared enough, badge or no badge. It's a matter of mentality...good judgement. This is about how those mothers in Mich. felt comfortable enough leaving their children with their friend...a good friend indeed. "To have good neighbors you've got to be a good neighbor." I'm sure the moms ran the scenarios through their heads & happen to know things happen..it's life...that's the risk they're taking. So let it be. What happened to the power of choice? Nada! This is just as ridiculous as the government taxing soda, saying it might help with obesity..the government could give a rats arse what our health is, just another way to get a lil something out of everyone. Um, because you CHARGE people to watch their kids. You've either got some serious trust issues or no friends, possibly both.

To the lady who pays $24 for a three year license. No, it sounds like you pay a lot more. I know that my CPR must be renewed every two years. That is $40. First aid is good for three years. That is $44. I imagine you have other classes such as fire safety, universal precautions, and if necessary, medication monitoring for any youngsters needing medication. It doesn't just cost you $24 for three years. Those other costs should be added in as well. I also live in the country and maybe we are just a bit backwards out here, but we know our neighbors very well. I understand that not just anyone can be a good daycare provider, but I can assure you there are many of us that are good parents that can judge who is and is not capable of taking care of our children. Sometimes all the classes, licenses, and education in the world do not replace just good common sense and really good friends and neighbors.

the person probably doesn't have friends that would help her out like that and now is taking it out on a great person. Look at how much money the state is wasting on this. On top of it, the states budgets is ready to bounce all over the place.

I am going to guess that their is a licensed daycare center in the area who turned her in. A licensed daycare that is irritated she doesn't get those children in her 'local' daycare.

If the state is so desperate for money, possibly they should go after all the dead beat parents who don't pay child support- instead of taking it out on this group of mothers.

So let the kids stay alone; let them wander the streets... GOOD GRIEF; if a neighbor raised concerns there is a neighbor that needs to get a life...it is less than an hour and it was putting the kids safety first.

Yeah so let the kid stand in the street where they are subject to the elements; strangers; and the opportunity to get into trouble.
