We're getting ready for the holiday season! TODAY is kicking off its 16th Annual Holiday Toy and Gift Drive for needy families all over the United States.
Imagine if there were no toys. The fact is that poverty in America has hit its highest rate since the Depression. Even though there are signs of economic recovery, it's expected that it will be several years before there will be improvement for those who have lost homes and lost jobs.
This holiday season, nearly one in five children will be living below the poverty level right here in the United States.
Parents are barely able to house, feed and clothe these children. A special present is simply out of the question. There will be no toys to put a smile on their little faces this holiday season unless you help. Even the smallest gift will be appreciated.
More than ever, we need you to help us take the stress off these families and make the holidays a special time of year, a time to forget unemployment and unpaid bills. It's time to help these families enjoy the spirit of the season with their children.
Hearing about so many dire situations and knowing that donations are down for some many nonprofits, we are proud to continue TODAY's long tradition of reaching beyond the looking glass of Studio 1A and into the lives of families in underserved communities all over the United States again in 2009.
Contact us now!
If you are interested in making a contribution, and all donations are appreciated, no matter how big or small, please email either Sam Sagenkahn (sam.sagenkahn@nbcuni.com) or Kate Cook (katherine.cook@nbcuni.com) at the Toy Drive. We hope to hear from you.
Last holiday season, TODAY viewers, website visitors and corporate contributors teamed up to provide nearly $28.5 million worth of toys, books, games, clothing, toiletries, electronics, musical instruments, CDs, videos, cosmetics and other suitable gifts to more than five million children via 203 organizations in all 50 states.
TODAY has distributed more than $200 million in donations since 1994. The TODAY Show Toy Drive became the first independent gift drive in morning show history. The unique program is designed to provide gifts for impoverished children and teenagers up to age 18 nationwide. This year's effort has already begun, with items being shipped early to communities who have dire need to house and clothe millions of children. It's now time to reach out to every viewer. Please help us during these trying times to give a gift to every child on our list. For many of them, we are the ONLY source of gifts for the holidays.
On the air
The Toy Drive is now a Rockefeller Center tradition. Surprise celebrities visit the crowd each morning to gather up their donations. Among those who came to help in past years have been George Clooney, Jon Hamm, Hillary Swank, Jim Carrey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Jack Black, Kevin Bacon, Scarlett Johannson, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh and Drake, Edie Falco, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ashanti, Paula Abdul, Rick Springfield, Sting, LL Cool J, Chris Isaak, Harry Connick, Jr., Martin Sheen, Julie Andrews, Lynn Redgrave, NY Mets manager Willie Randolph, Robin Williams, NY Yankees Alex Rodriguez and Joe Torre, Henry Kissinger, Yogi Berra, Katy Perry, Joe Perry from Aerosmith, Dustin Hoffman, Fall Out Boy, Susan Lucci, Molly Shannon, Donald Trump, Jimmy Smits, Phylicia Rashad, LeAnn Rimes, Jason Mraz, NASCAR'S Kurt Busch and Jimmy Buffett. Who knows who we'll see wearing the Santa hat collecting toys from the crowd. You've got to be here to see!
Major donations from corporations will begin to appear on the show beginning November 23. Starting the Monday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 30), we're urging all the visitors to Rockefeller Plaza to join in the fun and bring a gift for a child up to age 18 and donate it live to a surprise guest, on camera every day until December 23rd. So if you're planning a trip to New York, be sure to pack a gift for a child in need.
If you can't make it to Rockefeller Center to donate, be sure to tune in for special announcements on how you can participate from home.
Donate online
And here is one way you can contribute to the Today Show Holiday Gift Drive online:
In celebration of their 10th anniversary of Wish List, Amazon.com is matching donations made from the Today Show's Amazon Wish List. Donating is simple. Go to www.amazon.com/today, add as many items as you like to your cart, complete the checkout and we do the rest! All the toys from the Today Show's Wish List are top sellers from Amazon's Holiday Toy List, where customers can find this season's hottest toys, sporting goods, electronics, movies, video games and more.
The recipients
All donations, large and small, put some cheer into the holidays for a child who may otherwise not have received any gift at all. The items are often given to families who cannot afford to buy presents, so that the children can open a gift that's given to them by a loved one, not a charity. These items go to more than 200 nonprofit family organizations in all 50 states reaching millions of kids. Recipients include homeless shelters, children's group homes, schools, foster family services, domestic abuse shelters, Native American missions, military bases, hospitals, preschools, after school programs, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
The TODAY Show Toy Drive is a project of the TODAY Show Charitable Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible to the extent the law allows. In 2008, it was honored with a President's Volunteer Service Award.
Let's all work together in making this year's toy drive the most successful ever. It comes at a time of great need.

I am a Thirty-One consultant in Virginia and I am so blessed to be apart of this company. What a wonderful program the Today show has created! This is what the true meaning of Christmas is all about, love. I am proud that Thirty-One is apart of this.

This is one of the reasons I decided to join Thirty-One. This company truly knows what it means to give back. What a wonderful way to start the Christmas season!

I was watching the Today Show yeaterday when this was mentioned. It upset me very much when Anne went to thank the gentleman for his donations and stopped herself when she went to wish him a Merry Christmas and changed it to Happy Holidays. I understand that there are many holidays happening at this time but these were Chriostmas donations and there should be no reason why you can not say Merry Christmas. It has been Christmas for hundreds of years and should continue. If you donot celebrate Christmas you can reply with a Happy Holidays but people should not be stopped from saying Merry Christmas.
Just my two cents...
Merry Christmas to all.
Tony,
These people have no clue what Christmas means and yes it is sad. Let's keep praying for them. In the meantime, this Bible believing Christian from South Carolina has been spreading the word on what an outstanding job they are doing at being politically correct. Although they and Hollywood see us as a bunch of Southern uneducated hicks, THEIR SPONSORS ARE VERY INTERESTED IN WHAT CHRISTIANS HAVE TO SAY!!! i AM HAVING A GREAT TIME SPREADING THE WONDERFUL NEWS OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST AND THE DECEPTION OF THE TODAY SHOW TO ALL WHOM WILL LISTEN. IT HELPS WITH THE SADNESS AND BRINGS ME GREAT JOY!!! YOU MAY WANT TO TRY DOING THE SAME!

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, between 10-11AM EST, NBC's The Today Show horrified the Holy Spirit within me, Our Dear Heavenly Father and CREATOR, and Our Dear Lord JESUS CHRIST through a sick and twisted CHRISTmas segment. One of the show's reporters, Natalie Morales, interviewed a representative of Encyclopedia Britannica concerning this sponsor's gift of books to the show's CHRISTmas Toy Drive. As they are speaking the representative is holding up an extremely large book with extremely large letters titled EVOLUTION and GENETICS!!! The reporter concluded the segment by saying, "the gift of knowledge...what a wonderful CHRISTmas gift".
Please feel free to forward this email to as many Christians as you deem appropriate. Please continue to pray for our country. Please send comment letters to NBC and The Today Show to the following address: TODAY@nbcuni.com.

I am very happy to be a part of The Pampered Chef for the past 9 years. We donate to the Toy Drive, American Cancer Society and Feeding America.
Every year I take my grandchildren(ages now 8/10)give them a starting figure, a shopping cart and have them shop for TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM. It is so rewarding to see my precious "grands" shop for children in need with such thought and willingness to help. My 8 year old granddaughter said this year "Meeme that makes my heart feel so good!!" Think we are on the right road!!!
hi i see everyday all the toys & books and everything everyone donates and as much as it warms my heart it frustrates me.im a single mom of 4 and on the lower end of lower income.my family qualifys for help but i cant seem to find any because im not affiliated with any company or program. i heard certain after school programs and others like foster care agencys are the fortunate ones who receive the donations. my children and i arent a part of these programs(their school schedule dosent allow it) anyway i hurts that i cant seem to find the help we could really use.if anyone knows where we can go please contact me. times are hard and christmas time is filled with so much pressure to be able to keep up. we try to keep things in perspective and keep it simple and do things as a family but its hard...... anyway thanks for letting me vent and i really am fortunate for what i do have, its just a little difficult this time of year!i can be reached at lizamomof4@aol.com if anyone has ideas thanks so much & happy holidays!
I truly understand where you are coming from. My husband and I are a family with five kids. I am unemployed and my husband is the only one to pay the mortgage and all the necessities. I am very blessed to have my family and husband but with us, we are not affiliated to any of the organizations and such which closed a lot of doors for assistance with Christmas presents. all I am hoping to do is give my family something! Keep your head up. If you do hear of some place that can help... please let me know too. Liza.. you and your family are in my prayers! lorrainemomof5@yahoo.com
