Nadya is unemployed, live in a half-a-million dollar home, despite having 14 kids she has no child care responsibilities (she has a number of live-in nannies), and she always seems to be on a shopping spree. If anything, we are the real losers because we have not yet figured out how to stop Nadya from using her kids and the system to her own advantage. So don't worry about her. She might lose this house but find herself in a bigger and better home thanks to viewers of reality shows, donations from private citizens, charitable organizations and the reliable tax payers of California.

I TOTALLY disagree with this statement. Just because Nadya was an irresponsible single mother doesn't mean that ALL women should be banned from having children just because there's no husband. There are plenty of women who are perfectly capable of raising a child on their own, both financially and emotionally. And please don't play the "children are better off with two parents" card. How many times do we hear about children with married parents that are beaten, sexually abused, and even killed?

We are looking at possible 392 million by 2050.
Now have you looked at the conditions in overpopulated countries such as China or India for instance? Not to mention also the fact in this country due to medicine, technology and whatever else people will actually live longer.
The birth rate in the US exceeds the death rate.
What this will do it will have a suffering affect on the infrastructure, on resources, on finances, not to mention probable sociological affects as well.

I agree with Vicki - IVF etc. shouldn't only be made available to married women. BUT it is NOT unreasonable to expect regulation on these kinds of services - such as ensuring that the prospective mother is capable of supporting her children. It's just not right to assist people - at great cost - to bring children into the world that they have no hope of supporting. I'm TIRED of supporting other people's families because of stupid choices that they made.

I disgree with IVF regulation. The majority of women are naturally fertile. Having an exorbitant number of children is almost always accomplished without IVF. And the majority of people who do use IVF are people who are able to pay for it. Nadya Suleman really is a fluke. IVF regulation is unlikely to make a dent in population. It would prevent a few dozen babies at best, while making infertile couples to have their financial lives scrutinized in ways that fertile parents never experience. And that would not be fair.
A better solution would be regulation of the lending industry. If student loans were given only to students, in reasonable amounts, and made payable to schools only, she would not have been able to fund her IVF that way. For example, one does not need to take out 4 years' worth of student loans at once; they need only one semester's expenses at a time (including personal expenses), and should have their student status confirmed before acquiring the next semester's loan.
Having kids is only part of the financial burden. The maintenance costs of kids is another issue to be considered.
The reality show didn't pan out so now dad's credit is ruined because his daughter rabbit cannot afford the hutch. That is the only way she got into the house is because dad co-signed. There wasn't a financial institution willing to loan on her potential marketability.
I've only known about Octomom since the births of the octuplets. During this time, most posters, as well as myself, have already commented on the notorious aspects, and rightfully so. IMO, Suleman is a very smart, but highly mentally unstable woman. Her only interest is personal publicity and self-gratification by using her notoriety and CA and USA government funding as her "sources of income." The only way that she has found to continue this has been through uterus abuse and ultimately, borderline child abuse while remaining within the confines of legality.
Since she's made such a mess out of every single "opportunity" she claimed to have had, I'd like to see the following happen:
Duck lips, aka Octomom, will be then be devoid of her abnormal pleasure. And, the children will finally have decent parents who will give them stability and normalcy.

i think the doctor who performed the procedure out to be held at least a bit accountable in this....where was the ethics when he did this? Sorry but I think it does become our affair when she expects the rest of us to pay for her kids after she has them. She has mental problems as far as I'm concerned and that many children will have medical problems that we will all have to pay for also. I'm sorry for the children but think if some restrictions were put in place sooner she wouldn't be putting all of us in this position. I don't care if single women have kids but I think they should be able to provide for them without public assistance.

I could never understand what the big deal is about these people who become celebrities just because they have a gaggle of kids (not just Octomom, but Jon & Kate, and the Duggers as well.) Why the fascination? I have ancestors that had as many, or more, kids than these people, and nobody handed them any money and raised them to celebrity status. It was what you did in those days. You had a bunch of kids; you raised them to be upstanding, contributing members of society, and no one made a big deal out of any of it. It's just life. What's a balloon payment? I've heard of the adjustable rate mortgages. But not this kind. I wonder if they understood that they signed up for this type of mortgage. Where did they think they were going to get that money? And why wasn't she able to pay it with all her money from her 15 minutes?
To OMG: this kind of mortgage really isn't that unusual. It's usually taken out by someone who expects to be receiving a large amount of money before the balloon payment comes due. For instance, say you had a relative that died and left you a large sum of money, but the will was tied up in probate. You might take out a mortgage like this, knowing that by the time the balloon payment had to be paid, you would have sufficient funds to pay it. Sounds to me like Nadya's father thought his daughter was going to be making a ton of money and that SHE would be able to make the payment. You'd think that after seeing how she leeched off him and her mother all these years, he would have known better.
A balloon payment merely means you HAVE TO refinance the mortgage after five years. Unfortunately, since the economy and real estate collapsed the house probably isn't worth 450k so nobody will refinance it. Balloon payments always assume that real estate values go up and assumes that interest rates will be stable or go up. If values go down, you're inverted and your only choice is to walk away. This is the risk the bank took also. Now they get to bite it.

NO ONE that gains the kind of weight she did is going to have a perfectly flat stomach - the skin is stretched out too much to just snap back. Also, back when she was on the cover of Star, there was a comment on a message board by someone who had worked in a plastic surgeon's office for 15 years who said that all you needed to do to know Nadya had work done was look at her navel - instead of being round like most people's, it looked like a vertical coin slot. But as usual, this idiot thought we would believe her lies - like "I haven't had a tummy tuck" or "I was in the gym exercising within two weeks after the birth" (not likely when she had a c-section - your physical activity is VERY restricted within the first two weeks to avoid any chance of the stitches breaking).

She not only had to be careful of the stitches/staples. As far as that skin had been stretched, she had to careful she didn't trip on her belly. It had to have slapped her in the shins every time she stood up.
she probably couldn´t get rid of stretch marks but yes you can regain your figure..my mom was 105 lbs flat tummy and all after SIX children and my mother in law is 112 lbs and flat tummy and all after EIGHT children. My mom is now deceased but she was in better shape body wise than most 25 year olds when she hit 60 and she never had plastic surgery...and my mother in law couldn´t afford plastic surgery if she wanted to but she looks better than her daughters and looks like their sister and she is in better physical shape than some 30 year olds and she is 72.

Did your mother or mother in law have 8 babies at one time? Diastasis recti is pretty common in most pregnant women and especially in multiple births.
No but they were all from 10 months to 18 months apart...and having 8 different pregnancies seems to me that it would be harder on the body than 1 pregnancy of that magnitude.
Do you have any concept of what it costs to fee and clothe 14 children, some of whom are mentally challenged? You would have to make at least $500,000/year to even do a halfway decent job.

Optomyst, removing the children is often times much worse than leaving the children in the home. So unless you can show that she is being abusive to the children I disagree with removing them from their home where they are united as brothers and sisters with their birth mother. I detest the idea because countless numbers of children have suffered mental, physical and sexual abuse in our system of foster care. This children are all no longer new borns..so it is highly unlikely they can be adopted. A woman adopted children in Georgia for the purpose of the money that they pay to adopt foster children...and she killed the child. Sorry, but I am not willing to take the risk..leave them with her.
What is more likely is this woman is a member of the Quiverfull movement that the other groups of large children are belonging to...what is bad is that Andrea Yates and Russell Yates were also a member of that movement, till she went to prison for drowning the children because God told her she was a bad mother...we found out later that the leader of the movement had indeed been writing her and chastising her as a bad mother and not religious enough...and she had already been suffering from postpartum depression with psychosis. She had a baby and he was pushing her to get pregnant again because GOD ordered it.
The Duggars are also a member of this movement and I believe so are Jon and Kate..we empower them by paying attention to their television shows...if we stop paying attention they will not be on television..so we as a group contribute to the publicity. This cultist though that is promoting such a lifestyle needs to be investigated...I have long argued he should be in prison for accessory to murder for the deaths of those children that Andrea Yates killed...she of course was mentally incompentent and found so but what about him? You also insist that because there are 14 that they cannot possibly be receiving proper care...I have seen large families in public and they always seem to be much better behaved than people who have 1 or 2 children. I would argue that just having a large family does not mean automatically that the children are not being properly cared for...I don´t envy her in fact I pity the idea of having that many kids at one time...when would a person get any rest? No wonder she is thin as a rail..who wouldn´t be? However, large families can be adequately cared for with the normal family circle and she has round the clock nannies that help her.
That said..what caused the foreclosure wasn´t the lack of payments but the balloon payment...that my friends is precisely why we have a housing crisis in the US..balloon payments that occurred and a promise that you could refinance with them...or flex rates, interest only rates...etc. Now the market dropped and no one can be refinanced even with good credit because the market doesn´t hold the prices and the houses are worth less than they were when they were financed...If there is a balloon on a mortgage, payments have been made, balloon comes due during this time..make the mortgage company bite the bullet and refinance...for her and everyone else that is in danger of losing their home...why? because these idiots PROMISED things they could not deliver. Yes, promised. We bought our house during a housing boom and they tried to con us into that same scheme...my husband said hell no...finance me even with the higher payment..they offered a payment about 150 bucks less and a lower interest rate...but it was flex and had a balloon payment...hetold them...I can´t predict that I will have all of the money then..so how can I take that? they told him don´t worry we will refinance you...I wouldn´t let him fall for it..I said no..what if we can´t refi because of something happening...we took the larger payment and as a result still have a home.

I really don't think anyone IS going to give her the money. Who's going to do that? People don't just go around giving away $450,000. They generally have to be getting something from the investment. And I think Octomom's 15 minutes of fame are about over. I don't think she qualifies as a good investment.

I think the point Jan is trying to make is that if it wasn't for ridiculously generous social welfare and free lunch programs like the ones Obama and many democrats in California support, you wouldn't have people like Octomom, because if the welfare funds weren't there, they wouldn't try stuff like this in the first place. Because of richly funded welfare programs, actions don't have consquences.
It's like bailing out your teenage son time after time. They don't learn until you say the magic word, no, because there is no reason for them to.

Agreed with anne and the rest. People would just magically stop having babies and stop being poor if we'd just take free lunches away from poor kids.
While their are certainly people that think having more babies while they're on welfare helps there are those same people finding out that it doesn't. Because every time you have another child your cost of living goes up just as much.
Some of these people are women that believe having a child with a man will keep one around and might possibly help them financially by having someone in the home who can work and most find out - and in some cases never learn - that it isn't going to happen because they consistently choose stupidly.
Some are people who are just down on their luck through no fault of their own and find now that they can't make enough to get a pot to piss in.
There are many other reasons why people find themselves on welfare but it seems to me the focus should just be those who use children to get more welfare. Because once those people are gone the entire problem is solved.
But I agree.. all this will magically disappear if we just cut out things like free lunches.

Welfare can be used or abused. In this case it is being abused. Other times it is used when it needs to be used. People like octomom are definitely a problem but they are not the problem. Everyone always has the answer to poverty by saying cut off any help and then predictably point to people abusing the system as the problem instead of looking at the issue as a whole.

And it is a matter of opinion as to what percentage of people who currently collect welfare are abusing the system. You seem to feel it's not that many compared to the numbers of people who are truly in need. I feel differently. And the fact that over 70% of black babies are currently born to single black women is just ONE piece of evidence suggesting that, in fact, it is a great deal more than a handful of people who are abusing the system, making unbelievably irresponsible choices and expecting the taxpayer to foot the bill.
I believe in a safety net. I also expect my government to be responsible with my money and not let people abuse the system to the extent that they are. And if they can't be responsible with my money, than I want it back. I have my OWN family to take care of.

She said she pays for the nannies, so if she is assuming all the bills in a household of 14 kids, 1 idiot, 3 nannies, utilities, mortgage, cell phones, food, clothing, lawyer fees, etc; she needs a great deal of money that I cannot begin to calculate. With a mortgage of $48K per year, and a balloon payment of $450K, how was a woman with no skills going to manage that? She doesn't strike as fiscally conservative.
I wonder how a woman as crazy as she is can concentrate on the day-to-day of childrearing for 14, fiscal problems, and general management of the household.
