THANK YOU FOR BEING FAIR!!! Thank you GLAAD for taking on this effort and to the thousands of people who signed the Call for Action Petition. We spoke-up and NBC listened! The Today Show is (now) on the right side of equality!!!
After 30 years, I’m turning the channel on The Today Show. It is now the Yesterday Show to me. With two close friends and a member of my family in a cemetery from homosexually related AIDS, I consider myself a ‘fair’ person as well. Still, this smells suspiciously of a scheme on the part of the Gay and Lesbian’s to flaunt this in the face of the Christians and the Morale majority. And while I DO NOT wholly support either side, I’ll have no part of either of their shenanigans.
While we have just celebrated this magnificent Nation’s birthday and the freedoms which we as a whole tend to over look and take for granted, we should stop and give each other their independence and Stop forcing each other’s beliefs upon others. I am not a smoker, but I don’t believe that a smoker should be ostracized. I’m not in agreement with same sex marriages, so DO NOT shove it in my face.
For those of you that are into abusing others here in this forum for pleasure or perhaps you just can’t express yourselves; I am from the south, I am white, I am educated and if you look, you will see there are no grammatical errors and I have somehow managed to spell all of these words correctly. Yee Haw and shut the front door.
I have been feeling very let down by the Today show...the amount of political correctness is leaving a sour taste in my mouth, the pandering and flaunting towards the, so deemed by NBC, elite. Gay is not normal, and seeing kissing, touching, weddings..is not normal, it is pushing the baseness of their existance as a normal part of humanness..and it is not. The parts don't fit.
Regarding L Lohan..she was a cute child actress, hasn't grown up well..is not very talented, hasn't proven herself as an adult thespian...she has broken laws and I know how you feel about 'stars'..she aint one, and the system did let her down...she should have been in jail along time ago..and made to stay! I'm done with it...
How couples live and what they do in their bedrooms is no ones business but their own. BUT do it in their bedrooms.. to place what they do live on National TV is wrong.
The World excepts the word Marriage to mean a contract between a Man and Woman. It has always been this way since time began. Even in nature critters know what is natural, a female and male Wolf's mate for life. Not male to male or female and female wolf's. There are millions of married male and female couples, they live by the Law. The law of man and the Law of God. I don't care who's God you worship, I know of no God who has said that a Marriage is also a couple of the same sex.
For us to change this Law of nature for a few who wants to be different and are not only bent on breaking the Law but changing a Law that is and always has been, is to shove their bedroom ways into the faces of the million who live by the law. And NBC is listening to a few, not the Millions of male and female couples in America and around the World. Shame on NBC. You are slaping the face of God!
I for one, will not be watching the Today Show any more and I know many who won't. TV has gotten so bad, most shows aren't worth watching and the Today Show has just been added to a very long list.
Those male and male or female and female couples who wish to joined as a Legal couple, do so, but call it something else.. Not Marriage... For in the eyes of the World and God, it isn't a marriage unless it is Male and Female... How clear can that be!!!
This is not making America better..if you want equality than make up your own word for a union of a couple of the same sex. Don't use the word Marriage, because it is taken!
Here, here! Same with our family! Maybe God will strike lightning in the very near vicinity. I don't want anyone hurt, just jolted with the truth. Today show has lost my viewing.
It is so sad not to be able to have coffe with the "Today Show", after the article I just read. I enjoy the show but because of your choice to go against what the nation was built on, I have to find another. Same sex marriage is against all that God teaches us. What people do behind closed doors is their business and I don't care to know or hear about it. The predication is that you will be marry a gay couple on your wedding day show..I truly will miss you all..God bless you all; Deborah
Homosexuality is a sin. And Jesus said: "If you love me, keep my commandments" and "I am the light" and "men hate the light because their deeds are evil." He that says he has no sin is a liar.
Make no bones about it. Homosexuals hold rebellion and hate in their hearts being criminals of nature itself; being perverted with strange delusions. Do you hate me because I tell the truth?
They shouldn't allow Same Sex Couples Wedding bcause The State of New York hasn't pass the law so it should be avoided unless the governor passes it! If the courthouse judge cannot do the ceremony so should The Todayshow shouldn't allow it neither! That's ENOUGH they're trying to con the news program for doing something illigal & if they do allow the ceremony then they should all get arrested for it. NO EXCEPTIONS! Besides those people don't care if they get arrested & I'm sure they won't put up the bail $ for each 1 who's involved.
Lourdes-Pierce, don't you know? Gays have tons of cash! We don't have kids, so we can save our huge disposable incomes (that your kids are eating up in maccaroni and cheese) for lavish vacations, dictionaries, and bail!
Gays can still "get married," even if it's not recognized by the state. It's not illegal. The only person going to prison is you, hopefully after a pork-rind-fueled scuffle with some of your mulleted kinfolk captured on COPS.
Lourdes-Pierce your post is so insane that it is almost comical. Get a grip.
I also agree with Mike, the gay couple's I know have the nicest houses and live very nice lives, we always joke that we wish we had more gays on our block because their houses are always in impeccable order. But even better, they are also some of our nicest neighbors we could ask for. I say go for it!!! With all that is going on in this world, people who want to share and build a life together, shouldn't be an issue.
MikeMikeMike, thank you for helping to paint a more vivid picture of what I already had in mind as being the life and times of Lourdes-Pierce - too funny! I laughed at her comment thinking, "A mind like her's would jump straight to bail."
Good for you Today Show! My partner and I just may enter!
Thomas funny my daughter and I were speaking of Polygamists today. Would you want a "civil union"? Would your faith allow this? I'm not being sarcastic as I really don't have an answer to my questions. If you mean what you wrote will you help?
The State of New York recognizes marriages performed in other states where they are legal, for one thing. Second, there is no law in New York or anywhere banning same-sex WEDDINGS. Third, NBC is not bound by the laws of NY or anywhere else in defining whose weddings they will include in the contest.
js, wouldn't it be fair to ask for what homosexuals are asking today? Is there any LGBT person in this site that would fight for those who express thier love to more than one person? Why should my beliefs be kept on the side lines?
I'm confused. Can gays be legally married in New York now? Is the wedding going to be outside New York? I guess we will wait for further information, since the Today Show was simply abiding by the legal constricts of New York in their rules, not making a social comment about same sex marriages.
New York state recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other states. Therefore, if the couple were to get their marriage license in another state, they'd be considered by New York state to be married.
A WEDDING does not require a marriage certificate, so whether or not NY recognizes gay marriage is irrelevant. Gay couples who form civil-unions or domestic partnerships where they are legal are not forbidden by any law from celebrating their union with a Wedding .
Thank you to Today and GLAAD for not being bold and unafraid--leading the way in realizing that fairness, love, modernity deserve to exist and be expressed in ways that are sometimes even in spite of laws that say otherwise. They have existed in spite before, and they will in the future--allies are on the right side of history.
Very unwise move on the part of MSNBC, with their declining viewership. The gay community and their sympathizers may be offended by the fact they don't include gays in their wedding contest, however the amount of people offended by including something that millions of Americans still deem as perverse and immoral will hammer just another nail in their coffin of declining viewership.
If MSNBC opens the door for gay couples in their wedding contest, why draw the arbitrary line there? Why not include polygamists in their contest? After all they are "loving, consenting adults," Why not include a brother and sister? If we cannot draw the line using common sense about what's best in defining marriage, how can we draw any line at all?
I agree with you. I am totally disappointed in the Today show. The Bible clearly states what is marriage and it also states the abomination of this kind of acts between men and men and women with women. God is not pleased and neither am I. What about my rights!!! What I believe is based on the bible for which we all are to live by as one day we will stand before the Almighty and be judged.
Because that would just make me sad knowing that your teaching your kids to hate and spread your evil. If you only knew how evil you really were one day you will see the "light" and find out you were wrong to hate and judge others.
So I am one disgusting human being. LOL...It is funny how acceptance is the rallying cry for gay people, until it applies to those with which they disagree.
We have a differing opinion that is all. Differing opinions is not hate. However you were the first to attack with a statement about me being a "disgusting human being" and later saying i am "evil". Gay people wanted tolerance and acceptance on the TODAY SHOW Wedding Contest, but obviously their sympathizers aren't willing to extend that same courtesy to those with which they disagree. .
To Eric, I don't hate anyone, I don’t watch NASCAR and the Bible has no influence on how I feel about gay marriage. It is interesting that the readers of the Bible/Christians etc. get blamed for opposing gay marriage, when in Japan it is not legal to be married to the same sex. Japan is .7% Christian. So where do you think their reasoning comes from?
Mary, the Bible says that it is okay to have slaves and to kill your neighbor for not observing the Sabbath. Do you practice these ancient traditions also? Times have changed. You can't pick and choose what to believe.
"50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri."
But since you're busy quoting the Bible, why hasn't Bill Clinton been stoned to death? Do you eat cheeseburgers? What did you wear to work today, was it a blend of cotton and polyester? I hope not, because all of that is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord, according to the Bible.
If you believe in the word of the Bible, you believe in the WHOLE Bible. You don't get to play Cafeteria Christian and pick the parts you like and ignore the parts you don't.
THANK YOU to the producers, staff and talent for joining the reality of 2010.
1. Thank you NBC, for your courageous and wise decision.
2. For those of you who disagree with NBC's decision, why should you care? You probably watch FoxNews anyway, so why does it matter to you? You're only here to stir things up because the news of NBC's decision broke on FoxNews this afternoon.
3. It's about love, people. Let's not let it degenerate into name calling.
you're seriously comparing marriage equality to a brother and sister getting married? Oh my. Can't we all just get along and embrace equality and diversity instead of making these RIDICULOUS comparisons?
I mean, what if I want to MARRY my copy of the bible? Or my extra value meal? Or my Rollbacks at WALMART? I love all those things so much I just want to get married to them!!! If gays can get married why can't I marry my iPhone????!!!!!
People, it's 2010 and with so much access to information there's no excuse to be ignorant fools anymore.
Wake up and let the gays get married already. They already pay taxes that send your kids to school anyway.
NBC has lost my viewing and support. Stick to what's legal and not what SOME few want. So I'm guessing one of the four finalist will definetly be of this group to make everyone happy??!! Majority won't be happy. We weren't made to be in a same sex relationship. Liberal media working here!
Mary, I agree with you and I'm sorry you're getting insulted for expressing your opinion. As you said, the gay/lesbian movement is all about acceptance and dialog unless your opinion differs from theirs.
All these 'quotes' from the Bible are really interesting in a funny way. I'm hearing a lot of things from the law of Moses in the old testament which are the Judaic laws that were in force prior to the ministry of Jesus Christ. As he taught, his gospel was the higher law- some of the things in the Old Testament are superseded by things in the New Testament. Read it- it's good.
Appeasing the vocal minority just lost you another viewer, Today Show people. I feel sorry for you, because really, on this issue any business is between a rock and a hard place.
Very well spoken, Mary. I believe that they should be allowed to live in a way that makes them happy but I am tired of it being shoved in my face and then being called nasty names because I speak out publicly against them. Bad habit of that "community" to be that way. It shows a real lack of class. And I am sure that those rude people don't represent the majority but if they are the only ones standing and speaking then what are people to think. You are very articulate and well spoken, Mary. Not to mention very level-headed when under fire.
I agree with you Mary 100 % ,,,I am so glad that my children are all grown now. If they were still young I would definately change the channel and not watch this program anymore. What a Sad State this country is in. Catering to the moral indecentsies of the Bleedng Heart Liberals...
and who gives a S- - T if I spelled everything correctly~~
When you do not give rights to everyone you do not deserve rights yourself. No one is putting binds on your lifestyle yet you believe it is acceptable to restrict others from their birthright.
When I hear marriage is between a man and a woman and ordained by God and the person taken up this offer from God several times I wonder how sacred marriage truly is. Is it due to being afraid that same-sex couples will show you up in loyalty and devotion? Is this what the "no gay marriage" is all about?
I love the Today Show but will no longer be watchin it. I just cannot support them if they are goin to support homosexual "unions" , I will not smear the meanin of "marriage" by usin it to describe a homosexual union. This is disgustin'! I am disappointed in MSNBC for allowin this. Just another company butt kissin and layin down and lowerin it's standards to keep from offendin the gays. So, what about all of us who are offened by homosexuality? Is it ok to offend us? I hope you loose so many viewers that you have to go back on it and change thee rules or just do away with the Weddin contest all together. I don't care. I have watched it many times and even participated in the votin a few times btu never again! Shame on you MSNBC!
I agree completely. Once you open the door to this sort of abnormal behavior you can't discrimnate against the others. This will be just one more reason to stop watching NBC. They haven't been doing a very good job of journalism either. Their are a lot of stories out there that aren't being covered. Politicians must be paying their salaries. Now they are jumping on the goverments push to accept the gay agenda. It's a very, very sad day.
We will also be boycotting the products that pay for this show.
I love people. I am a faithful christian and God wants us to love others. I believe kindness is something we need to consider for the fact that it is a fruit of the spirit which is found in the Holy Bible. I know the Bible states marriage is created for one man and one woman and I agree. However, we all have some type of problems in our life which some are caused by the way we were raised. Sometimes we don't realize we have certain problems. I believe homosexuality is a problem caused by the way one is raised. I believe we need to encourage people who choose homosexuality as a way of life to receive Christ into their lives and receive counseling. It is hard for us to all understand but harm has been done by moms and dads. I love u homosexuals but I disagree with the decision you have made. You are causing a lot of anger and division in our country by your efforts. It is time to be adults and take responsibility for our decisions.
Thank you, NBC and the Today Show, for doing the right thing. Same-sex weddings are NOT illegal in New York State. To the contrary, many same-sex couples have their weddings in New York. And if the marriage license is granted by an issuing state (like Connecticut), New York State recognizes the marriage. You did the right thing.
Did you know that 26 states allow first cousin marriage, while only 7 administer same-sex unions? One of which is New York. That's right, you can marry your cousin in New York. So Mary, sweet Mary... Do you think first cousins marrying on the show should be allowed? It's "legal". Kudos to MSNBC!!! What they are doing is right and I am very proud of them for this decision. I am glad that the "Mary's of this world" don't make all of the rules.
Great decision, Today Show! I have watched your show for many years and was growing tired of not seeing same gender couples as potential participants. I am confident that you will benefit from the support and viewership of the gay community.
The Today show has hit rock bottom with this story. Same sex couples getting married...and people (including kids) watch this family show? My guess is MSNBC caved in due to the minority of progressive liberals applying pressure. GLAAD is a joke and it is amazing that MSNBC (Today Show) has taken the low road. One word comes to mind when I read this story - sick. Hopefully, the law will be repealed as it is in every other state in due time. As Obama and Palin have said so eloquently - marriage is between a man and a woman. Who said both parties disagree on everything!
Good for the Today Show (which I watch faithfully every morning before leaving for work). Equality may have paved the way for one fun and interesting wedding contest this year!
Equality??? This isn't about equality. Gay people have the same equality that everyone else in America has, in that they are free to marry someone of the opposite sex. However, they choose not to make use of this freedom/privilege.
So, the real issue is not about denying gay people the right/privilege to marry, but about denying them additional rights. Homosexuals have the same freedoms or rights that heterosexuals have. But they want more.
The government doesn’t afford anyone the right to marry their sibling, their child, or more than one person. Because of these laws, those who engage in incestuous relationships, pedophiles, and polygamists are disappointed. These people feel discriminated against, but this type of discrimination is appropriate. The gay community cries discrimination as well, because their definition of marriage isn’t always accepted. The same type of discrimination that disallows a man to marry his sister or daughter should be applied to gay marriage. It is appropriate, based on the purpose and nature of marriage itself. However that is unacceptable to gay people because theywant additional rights, not equal rights.
Mary, what's this about gay people having the same equality that everyone else has???? Homosexuals want MORE freedom than other people? What planet are you living on?
It's so tempting to write a lengthy list of reasons why you are so dead wrong about this one. But if you're so convinced of this something tells me your ignorance level is off the charts and beyond help....
name ONE additional right that gay people want. just one!
how about the right to file a joint federal tax return?
the right to hospital visitation?
the right to social security benefits of their partner?
the ability to adopt children?
those are the BIG ones. even if marriage between same-sex couples is legal in the state where you live, gay couples do NOT have recognition under federal law.
So please, do yourself a favor and educate yourself with a bit of research before making absurd comments. YOU are the one who deserves pity.
Mary, it is NOT true that homosexuals are asking for MORE rights than heterosexuals. When gay marriage is legal everywhere, YOU TOO will have the right to marry someone of the same sex. You will also have the right not to, if you wish. That is perfectly EQUAL and fair.
The right for gays to "adopt" children? Why can't gay couples have children of their own? Hmmm. I'm not against gays...even though I disagree with the lifestyle. I'm just sayin... I think that's just one little "hint" of evidence that God probably did not intend for man to be with man or woman to be with woman in a physical/marital relationship. No anger... just don't agree with the gay marriage thing...
Gay people CAN and DO have children of their own. Their plumbing still works. Many simply prefer to help fix the mistakes of heterosexuals, and adopt children that straight people don't want, or to help a child who is not biologically related to either parent. Maybe God fully needed and intended for gay people to clean up the breeding messes of careless straight people.
Derrick... if a homosexual gets beat for whatever reason it will be because he is gay and the person will be charged with a hate crime. The punishment will be more severe than say, if my son, who is straight, gets beat for whatever reason. That is perverted justice and unequal application of law. You can bash me incessantly for being a conservative Christian and you are just exercising your rights. If I simply say that you are wrong for being homosexual, then I am homophobic and in need of sensitivity training. That's a double standard. Even the homosexual community would balk at throwing away all laws on morality and social structure. But they insist on making the new rules and sling words like hater and sicko around when someone resists letting a very small minority of society dictate what those laws on morality and social structure should be. In California, the state was willing to compromise with a law declaring legal "civil unions" for homosexuals with all rights and privileges granted to them. But there was an outcry because they insisted on calling it "marriage." Why is that? Because the homosexual community does want more. It wants the heterosexual community to admit that homosexual activity is moral and right, whether we think it is or not. It's not about equality, because not even the homosexual community is promoting equality for ALL forms of behavior. It's really just about a very small portion of society insisting on ramming down the throat of the rest of society a new social order and demanding that we admit that we like it, which we don't.
I don't know how you can even make this absurd statement. Laws are made to protect MINORITIES who have been historically discriminated against. Straight whites are NOT a minority and are not bashed, killed, ostracized, or ridiculed by the minority. You'll never know what it's like until you live as a minority. Then and only then will you understand.
Mister Precedent said: Gay people CAN and DO have children of their own. Their plumbing still works. Many simply prefer to help fix the mistakes of heterosexuals, and adopt children that straight people don't want, or to help a child who is not biologically related to either parent. Maybe God fully needed and intended for gay people to clean up the breeding messes of careless straight people.
---------------------
What? So God now condones the sin of homosexuality as a panacea of the wages of the sin of fornication and adultery? Where in the word of God do you find such a paradox?
Ron Hamelin...no, laws were made to keep mortal humans in check and to recognize that a higher form of government was needed to "govern" the people, so the people wouldn't get out of line. Laws were never intended to give people what they wanted, they were instituted in recognition of God and His sovreignity. that mortal humans don't know it all and we needed a form of conduct to live by.
Mary, you are so misinformed that it's embarrassing. You would do yourself a favor by shutting up, but of course, this country gives you the right to make an idiot of yourself so go for it.
"America", as you call yourself, Obama plans to repeal DOMA, which section 3 of DOMA was repealed TODAY! Read up on your political alliances before you take a stance.
For all of you lovely Bible thumpers out there, no one actually cares what you say. You can spout it all you like, but as soon as you bring the Bible into a legal discussion you have just discredited yourself. Read the Constitution. Laws are not to be made based on any religious influence. You have no standing in the law.
As far as "special" rights vs equal rights, your theory is flawed. People have the right to marry who they love regardless of gender. When you tell me that I cannot marry someone because of my gender, that is discrimination, and gender is currently a socially protective class. I didn't choose my gender any more than you did. Homosexuals do not choose to be who they are. But let me tell you this! YOU choose your religion yet you get protected rights. So even if one were to entertain this ridiculous idea that gay people choose their orientation and therefore should not be given equal rights, then you have just backed yourself into a corner where we can remove all legal rights given to religious organizations because people "choose" it. So you should watch what precendent you are setting for future children.
What disgusts me about people like yourselves is when you try to compare homosexuals to pedofiles or those who practice bestiality or incest. Two consenting adults are not the same as a man with a child or a man with an animal. By your own admission you are claiming to be in the same mindframe as a child or that of an animal. Are you an animal Mary? America? As far as polygamy, watch what you say, because polygamy is promoted in that Holy Bible of yours. So is slavery and killing people. I'm suppose to use that as my "moral compass?" Really? What's even more ludacrous is the FACT that your Bible doesn't even exist. There is NO original manuscripts from Paul or Moses, or ANYONE that wrote parts of the Bible. They are no where to be found! There is NO evidence of it WHATSOEVER! And you want me to believe you when you have nothing of substance? Good luck.
funny how Paul and Moses were the only ones mentioned...seen any christian movies lately? Yeah, The Ten Commandments. What about the Dead Sea Scrolls? Be careful with generalizations, folks!
I am very disappointed in the Today Show. Same sex marriages are wrong. It goes against the Bible. One day you will be judged on why you let this happen. God did not intend for men to marry men and women to marry women. You will loose many viewers if you allow this. I have watched the Today Show for 30 years now but if they allow gay marriages I will seriously consider changing what morning show I will watch in the future. Please stand for what this country was built on, and that was the Bible!
and slmyers, one day God will shame you for your flawed-logic and for failing your spelling class!! I'm sure he will harshly judge you for using his name to unfairly judge others!!!
Feel free to watch the CBS morning show instead. They could use a few extra viewers and NBC will retain their solid lead without ill-informed viewers like you.
slymyers, this country was NOT founded on the Bible. The VERY FIRST PHRASE of the VERY FIRST AMENDMENT totally NEGATES the Bible. Every American citizen is free to believe and worship (or not) as he chooses. Just as you are free to ignore God/Jesus' repeated commands for his followers to kidnap, rape, hurt, and kill people, plus the relationships between Ruth and Naomi or David and Jonathan in the Bible, non-Christians are free to ignore the entire Bible. Laws cannot legally be based upon any religion.
Mister Precedent, I don't know who you are, but I love you. I'm sad that your heart is so full of hate and disagreement.
In love, I need to correct your thinking on a few things: Ruth was Naomi's daughter-in-law. She later remarried a man named Boaz. David and Jonathan were best friends and brothers-in-law. JESUS never commanded even once for anyone "to kidnap, rape, hurt, and kill people." Please before you decide to type anything else, check the True Source first. Our laws and laws of other nations are based on ethical and moral beliefs stemming from beliefs held in religious relms.
As for your quote below, I challenge you to read the whole 32nd chapter of Exodus - wait; read the whole book of Exodus, and then you'll understand why He asked this to be done.
Susan, lots of homosexuals marry people of the opposite sex when it's convenient or expected, even if there is no sexual attraction. Boaz was REQUIRED BY LAW to marry Ruth because he was a RELATIVE, and expected to provide a proxy heir for Naomi's husband, since his sons had died. Their marriage was about PROPERTY and INHERITANCE.
Ruth 1: 14 ". . . Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave* unto her."
*The Hebrew for clave is identical to that describing a heterosexual marriage in Genesis.
The relationship between David and Jonathan is also described using the same vocabulary as heterosexual romances and marriages elsewhere in the Bible.
1 Samuel 18:1 ". . . the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. . . . Jonathan and David made a covenant*, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him**, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. "
*They got married. **And naked.
2 Samuel 1:26 "I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women."
Don't forget the passages that describe them kissing until David got an erection. You're probably not even aware of this because the original Hebrew is deliberately mistranslated and the story has been changed in several Bibles.
Unlike most Christians, I've read the ENTIRE Bible multiple times. You should try it. Indeed, Jesus DID command his followers to kill people, just after the parable of The Ten Pounds:
Luke 19:27 Jesus said, "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me."
Plus, there are HUNDREDS of verses where God (in case you're a Christian who doesn't believe that Jesus IS God) commanded his followers to kidnap, rape, hurt, and kill people. Here are a few examples (I suggest that you read the complete stories for context):
Numbers 31:17-18 "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." Ezekiel 9:6 "Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women . . . "
Deut 21:10-12 "When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; "
The First Amendment protects your right to justify and praise the mass murder of men, women, and children in the Bible, if that's the kind of thing that YOU consider 'moral' (as long as you don't actually OBEY any of the verses where God commands his followers to commit those atrocities). You can pick and choose which Bible verses to embrace as you wish, as can every other Christian. The Bible doesn't apply to the law, or to non-Christians, just as Islamic and Hindu texts don't apply to non-Muslims and non-Hindus.
If you don't agree with homosexual marriage, then DON'T HAVE ONE. Obviously, you're not allowed to kill homosexuals, even if you think it's perfectly moral for God to command his followers to do so:
Leviticus 20:13 "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."
Wrong. The First Amendment was debated on establishment of a national church. The Federal rather opted to make the national theatre a trans-denominational, anti-sectarian public square. And 9 out of 13 states had state run churches up to the ratification of the Federal constitution. The First Amendment did NOT dissolve the state run churches unlike other proposed amendments that were to also enforce freedom of the press, speech, and assembly on the state governments. James Madison thought the 14th article on the draft Bill of Rights was the most valuable amendment in the whole lot; and the 14th article did pass the House; but was killed in the Senate. Why? Because Madison’s position retorted that the senators were “too patriotic to their own state” and rather regulate those rights at the state level.
And there was no article on that draft Bill of Rights that required the states to disestablish their own state run churches. Those states had churches that were paid out of state taxes for all citizens for that state. Disestablishment of state run churches took decades to transpire up into the 1830s. Heck, even state constitutions like Massachusetts had in modern times still declared the state to be a Protestant state even though the state church was disestablished a long time ago.
What we are is a Common Law country. When you go to law school, especially in studying international law, there is a legal basis of law found in countries. In some Western states it is the Civil Law. In some Muslim states, it is the Sharia Law, and here in the US we are a Common Law country. That is the legal basis of our constitutions and contracts where Biblical principals are predicated upon. In there, homosexuality is the “crime against nature” or the “crime that is unspeakable”.
When the Danbury Baptists wrote that famous letter touted by the SCOTUS for “separation of church and state” President Thomas Jefferson was responding to the Danbury Baptists plea for religious freedom in their state of Connecticut because that state still was running the Congregationalist denomination there. Jefferson responded that there is a “wall of separation of church and state” at the federal level so he could not do anything to step in to the State of Connecticut and demand religious freedom rights in that state. Yet, Jefferson thanked the Danbury Baptists for their sentiments in that letter exchange where they offered their prayers and support for Mr. Jefferson believing that God had put him in the Office of the President for a reason. It was not long afterwards that Mr. Jefferson produced his version of the Bible that stripped out all the miracles down to just providing a moral code. That became known as the “Jefferson Bible”, printed out of the Government Printing Office out of the Federal Treasury, and handed to every freshman Congressman that was elected to office right up into the 1920s. Why? Because the Bible, that is to say the Judeo-Christian civil code, is the defacto civil code of the land proxied by the Common Law. The founders knew that you cannot have a republic last long without a moral and religious people.
That is why the separation is called the “one way” wall of separation. Religion is not barred from the state but the Federal state is barred from religion where we have freedom of religion where people are free to any mode of worship or liturgical rites; but NOT freedom from religion where people have license to violate the moral civil code predicated on the Bible.
I too m very disappointed with NBC's decision to allow same sex couples to particiipate....am afraid this will backfire on them big time! Please reconsider this and do what is right ...at least in the eyes of the Lord....he is the one who matters after all!
God repeatedly commands his followers to kill people. Do YOU do EVERYTHING God says in the Bible, Kim?
Exodus 32:27 ". . . Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour."
you seem to do what everyone else likes to do with the bible... only use what parts suit them an never the whole context. I wonder what the rest of that story was about in Exodus, maybe you should read the whole thing and find an entire quote that helps your cause instead of misquoting God from the bible.
And it seems that there are extra rights that are being asked for besides those that are basic. The only flawed logic I see here is the peoples who don't like that people disagree with a moral wrong. Moral equality is not always the best for the flourishing of a people, or of a nation, or of the world. It seems that the culture of do what I want, when I want to, and how I want to do it, along with all the relativism that goes along with it.
One last point. The first amendment separates the Government from religion it doesn't say that people must be forced to accept what is morally unacceptable because it does not lead to the flourishing of the human race. It does not give the Government the right to play the role of any God or gods, and it most certainly does not give the right of the government to discriminate against religion because of what the church believes or doesn't believe. It also was meant to keep the Government from accepting a state religion as there was and is in England, called the Anglican Church, the head of which is the Queen, right now, or King.
And all can scruple my spelling and grammar all you want but it still does not distract from the point of the argument, rather it just shows how unaccepting you are of people as well.
People misquote from the Bible all the time, and it's usually the religious extremists for their own purposes. I'm sorry to say, but you cannot pick and choose what to follow and not follow in the Bible. Jesus said that the "old covenant" has been replaced by the New Covenant. Therefore, we cannot and must not take any piece whatsoever from the Old Testament and use it against gays or for any other purpose. It's dead, gone, done, over, finito. The new replaced the old. If you choose to stay with the old, then you must follow each and every piece of it, which, as people know, is about following specific diets, laws, marriage rites, murder, not having sex at certain times of the month, marrying only for children, it being a "shame" to be "barren," and on and on.
Again, it's either ALL or NOTHING from the old testament. Once you've agreed that this is true (it is, read Jesus' words), then you'll have to look at the New Covenant (testament), specifically Jesus' words which are all about LOVE and us NOT JUDGING others. Let GOD do the judging. Look for Jesus's words--all of them--and follow them. You'll soon realize that this fight against 2 people simply wanted to be able to love each other is a fight that Jesus would never have taken.
It's a shame that when you were first approached you dismissed the complaints, you had to be threatened with a boycott and bad publicity before you finally agreed to do the right thing. Too bad that your first instincts were to be bigots, and when this was pointed out, you refused to budge until the Publicity became too much.
Shame on the Today Show! I am not a CHristian but I am extremely dissapointed at their decision to allow same sex couples to compete. What an abomination! They have just lost one viewer!
I too am a Christian, make it three less viewers. As far as gay sex, I don't even want my mind to go there. I guess that makes me narrow minded and evil. So be it!
Redeem, heterosexual couples do the SAME things that gay couples do sexually. If YOUR marriage is only about sex, or if YOU are obsessed with what other people are doing in their bedrooms, then YOU are the one with the problem.
I call the "sex" talk lame excuse number one and "The Bible Tells Me So" lame excuse number two. If you are going to try to justify your closed mind why not be a bit more creative.
I have been watching Today for many years. This announcement upsets me to the point that I'll stop watching it now. I realize that you couldn't care less, and that I don't matter to you, but I'm doing what I believe is right in God's eyes.
Derrick, doesn't your comment to Pender indicate you have "judged" her as ignorant and irrational? How is it being "judgmental" is only recognized if it's against people who trust what God says about a topic? Jesus loves ALL people regardless of which area they've fallen short of His perfection. He forgave all; John 3:16 doesn't say "He so loved Christians", but says "He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son...". And He helps all who invite Him to do so to overcome their shortcomings while He loves them before and during the process. Homosexuality is clearly discussed as one of the areas of shortfall (sin if you prefer) that He will help anyone overcome and be freed from that bondage. One does not have to BE an alcoholic to KNOW it is horribly damaging. Similarly, one does not need to be homosexual to recognize when God says something is damaging, that it is - nor to recognize the horrendous human statistics that prove it's damaging, even to people who don't believe Him and only believe humanistic facts. Jesus loves you too, Derrick, and will help you with whatever areas you've fallen short of His Glory. IF you allow Him, he never forces Himself on you. Blessings Dude! Dave M
Derrick...God does care what we fill our minds with on t.v., movies, music, etc. If we expose ourselves over and over with this filth we'll start thinking it's ok and it's NOT!!!
Good, I wouldn't want you to watch me be married to my best friend and soul mate anyway. She happens to be a woman just as I am myself. Why not support a healthy, loving relationship instead of an abusive one. Don't be so quick to judge or discard good people for wanting the same opportunity, sharing their love with America. If you are disgusted by this, then by all means close your eyes. Dont' expect an invitation.
Thank you! I haven't watched the Today Show in over six years, but due to their decision to include same-sex couples, I will be watching the show again.
Moi all these naysayers are saying they are quitting the show but just think with you and all the other's in favor of the decision will be watching. Sounds to me like quality and caliber of the audience is going to skyrocket! The poster that said the viewing was slipping is most like the ones watching now that makes it want to slide under a pier.
Yet another reason to stop watching this failing network. I am sick to death of getting this repugnant agenda pushed in my face. I have no desire to see it and mostly, I would not want my kids to be drifting through TV one morning and see two people of the same sex getting married on live TV like it is something right and celebrated. Before you start all of the "go to" bible nonsense, my thinking this is disgusting has nothing to do with religion or any book of that religion, so don't even bother.
To quote Shakespeare, "I think he doth protest too much."
@JimboinGR: being gay isn't contagious, so I don't think you need to worry about your kids "catching" it like they might catch the flu.
do yourself - and your kids - a favor and teach them about equality and the reasons why we should celebrate our differences instead of shun people we don't understand.
Derrick, Derrick... The Muslims who killed over 3500 innocent people working in the twin towers on 9-11-2001 (wow, was it that long ago?) were ALSO very "different" from me. Should I "celebrate those differences"?? Or condemn them as horribly evil? Obviously homosexuality doesn't equate to the level of terrorism in terms of damage to other people, but statistics clearly show it DOES damage many other people regularly (diseases of the body and emotional/mental problems). My fiance's brother is dying of AIDS right now, given to him by a man who said he "loved him and wanted to marry him". Some love that was. Do YOURself a favor (and your kids if you have any) and teach yourself & them about Jesus' true Love, forgiveness and empowerment to overcome every evil that "does so easily beset us". And stop trying to push error and foolish lifestyle choices onto other people under the guise of equality and fairness, even if you don't want to enlighten yourself.
THANK YOU FOR BEING FAIR!!! Thank you GLAAD for taking on this effort and to the thousands of people who signed the Call for Action Petition. We spoke-up and NBC listened! The Today Show is (now) on the right side of equality!!!
Another step in the march for marriage equality. This country is changing for the better faster than I ever dreamed. There's hope for us after all.
You HOMOSEXUALS will be the only one's watching. The rest of us have turned the channel.
You HOMOSEXUALS will be the only one's watching. The rest of us have turned the channel.
The predication is that you will be marry a gay couple on your wedding day show..I truly will miss you all..God bless you all; Deborah
thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Christopher Parker "thank you" to infinity and beyond. I think we're moving a bit faster now.
You HOMOSEXUALS will be the only one's watching. The rest of us have turned the channel.
And you Michael the arc angel will turned into a fallen angel, or more of the ANGEL OF DEATH AND HATRED
I love when anti-gay posts are filled with spelling and grammatical errors. Lourdes' opinions are probably as well-informed as her English skills.
Let’s just hope the Show will make room for me and my two girlfriends next year. Polygamist unite!
You HOMOSEXUALS will be the only one's watching. The rest of us have turned the channel.
Â
.
Mary you are one sick disgusting human being. I hope you don't have kids I really really hope not.
I do have kids, what does that have to do with anything?
Because that would just make me sad knowing that your teaching your kids to hate and spread your evil. If you only knew how evil you really were one day you will see the "light" and find out you were wrong to hate and judge others.
So I am one disgusting human being. LOL...It is funny how acceptance is the rallying cry for gay people, until it applies to those with which they disagree.
.
im done with this topic.. go read the bible mary or go watch Nascar I'm sure one of the two you do religiously.
So where do you think their reasoning comes from?
.
Mary, the Bible says that it is okay to have slaves and to kill your neighbor for not observing the Sabbath. Do you practice these ancient traditions also? Times have changed. You can't pick and choose what to believe.
THIS is disgusting. From http://www.divorcerate.org/
I agree with you Mary. Also eric is an idiot
Thank you Today for doing the right thing!
Anything for ratings, unbelieveable :(
Oh, what a disappointment this will be to the polygamists, as they aren’t included in this contest.
GLAAD blackmailed MSNBC and threatened to “out” all their gay employees. What a joke MSNBC is, not that millions don’t already know that.
Great decision, Today Show! I have watched your show for many years and was growing tired of not seeing same gender couples as potential participants. I am confident that you will benefit from the support and viewership of the gay community.
You HOMOSEXUALS will be the only one's watching. The rest of us have turned the channel.
Who said both parties disagree on everything!
we'll be happy to send you a barf bag to make this "sick" transition a little easier for you.
do you also throw up when you watch old videos of when they finally allowed black people to drink out of "whites only" drinking fountains?
change is hard, i know.
Well said, Amercia1.
to America1,,, RIGHT ON :)
When u believe in something, Stand Strong, Even if you are Standing Alone"
and u r not standing alone...Conservative And PROUD !!
Yes, the same old story during slavery, women's rights, black rights. Yes, you just keep standing strong against fairness and justice for all.
However that is unacceptable to gay people because they want additional rights, not equal rights.

Kudos to the Today Show!
See you in Heaven, dear...
slymyers, this country was NOT founded on the Bible.
I'll be praying for you, Mister Precedent.
In Christ's love,
A Christian
But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
Ezekiel 9:6 "Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women . . .
Mister Precedent
Religion is not barred from the state but the Federal state is barred from religion where we have freedom of religion where people are free to any mode of worship or liturgical rites; but NOT freedom from religion where people have license to violate the moral civil code predicated on the Bible.
thank you!
Sodomites have no right to be married. Leviticus 20:13
Mister Precedent
you seem to do what everyone else likes to do with the bible... only use what parts suit them an never the whole context.
I am a Christian. Make it two less viewers :(
I too am a Christian, make it three less viewers. As far as gay sex, I don't even want my mind to go there. I guess that makes me narrow minded and evil. So be it!
Funny, only you bought up gay sex. Its marriage after all. Don't ya know, most gay couples stop having sex after marriage too. :)
Today show rocks.
I have been watching Today for many years. This announcement upsets me to the point that I'll stop watching it now. I realize that you couldn't care less, and that I don't matter to you, but I'm doing what I believe is right in God's eyes.
Um, if you think God is really concerned with which morning show you are watching, then I think you've been drinking too much Kool Aid.
He's probably MUCH more concerned with your ignorance and irrational judgment of people you don't even know.
Dave M
Very well said...it is the truth not the judgement that you were speaking and in love I might add! :)
I really thought that the cable shows were for this kind of subject matter and not the general tv?!?
Glad to hear that those who walk in true love not criticism are still being "light and salt!"
Truth really does set us free! Pray is the weapon of love! EPH 6
Derrick...God does care what we fill our minds with on t.v., movies, music, etc. If we expose ourselves over and over with this filth we'll start thinking it's ok and it's NOT!!!
This is the first time I will not participate, follow or watch Today Throws a Wedding! Sorry but ya'll made a really poor choice.
Thank you, NBC, for being fair. I watch the Today show intermittently but will watch regularly from now on.
