The Catholics can only prey on their own now. Most people in this country are recently descended form Native Americans ( my grandmother for instance) It is an honor and somewhat a show of "testosterone" for males to have long hair. I am surprised Americans don't jump all over this. Every "good Catholic" male should grow their hair out in support :)
To think we try, from a young age, to teach children empathy & the altruistic manner of living & giving to one another who are less fortunate is beyond the pale.
There is no question as to why so many are so anti-religion; this example is a prime reason. Maybe if the teacher could have explained this to the kids as a teachable moment letting them learn early on how we can help one another, it would be so much better than just "lecturing" morals & values of giving. Maybe the entire class might have decided that they too would want to give to someone they don't even know because they CAN & grow THEIR hair for a class project! But with a "bureaucrat" like the mother was dealing with, the chance could have never have happened.
When I was in elementary school, there was a certain little girl who was from a family of 13. Her name was Marjorie & I've never forgotten her. She obviously was poor & I befriended her. One day when the weather 1st. got cold outside, she came to school in a thin summer dress with no socks & only a sweater on. After school I gave her my coat & told her I had another ( not really, but I wanted to preserve her dignity ). When I got home I caught hell as I was always losing things & my mother wanted to know what happened to my coat. Did I leave it on the bus? When I told her, she immediately got very quiet & went to her room to see if she could find something heavy for me to wear. At the end of the week, we went downtown & bought a new coat. That night she fixed my favorite dinner-"ba-sketti." lol
Thought what we do, our children see who we ARE! Values are much better put into action than into lectures.
Only in every Catholic rendering I've ever seen. However, I'm pretty sure the Big C could explain that away (as they can with everything incongruent with whatever their current agenda is) by saying that short hair was impractical for some reason.
It's sort of the same way that some more conservative Christian faiths avoid wine durring communion. They believe that Jesus drank wine as a matter of sanitation only, that he would have consumed water alone if it had been safe to drink.
I cannot think of a better use of the boys hair. Why not have a contest with all the youngsters in the school to see who can donate the most in one year...
My wife is going through chemo right now and has been the beneficiary of kind hearten souls like this young man...
To the "powers at be" at this school...what in hell are you trying to teach these children anyway? Why not teach them a little about compassion and giving?
V. Bevis - so true - a missed opportunity for teaching so many things. Especially when there has been so much press lately with bullying and hate. This boy is such a good example to so many. Here is a person doing something that will change the life of another less fortunate person for the better. There have to be other schools that would welcome this child - obviously what is a priority at this catholic school is questionable. If my child was a student there I would be withdrawing her from their program.
Why do people think that the rules simply don't apply to them?
Come back and make that statement when your child or a child you know is bald from chemo. Not all hair can be accepted, it can't be dyed, it has to be 10 inches long, it has to be sent to the right place by the hairdresser. The wigs that are made take over 100 man hours, they align the hair so that it's cuticle runs in the same direction as real hair. Each few pieces of hair are hand sewn into the wig, a stylist can then cut it too look like the hair that the person had before or a new style. It's really such a good cause, I don't think the "rule" should apply as long as the hair is cut when it meets the regulations of giving.
America 24-7, according to the article, the rule wasn't in place when she registered her child for pre-K. My Mother is going through chemo treatments now. Losing one's hair can be very traumatic. I can imagine that a child would be even more traumatized - these parents are trying to do something nice for a stranger. Maybe the school could change the rule (that they just adopted), and more parents might get the idea to do something nice for someone else. Isn't this what Christian's are supposed to be about?
whoa, I just caught the fact that the rule was just changed. Oh that is kind of messed up! Someone in the administration is on a power trip!
I went to Catholic school and always had to have our hair above the collar. It was the late 60s and 70s so we all kept our hair right at the collar. I look at the pictures now and you have never seen so many Bobs on boys. We would time our last hair cut of the school year so that you could go into summer with the longest possible hair and let it go all summer! Then everyone was willing to take the detention to wear it long on the first day. The second day was suspension or a hair cut(buzz cut) from the priest.
But even back then they gave us that first day to be ourselves!
BS rules are just that, BS! What does maintaining a "neat" appearance have to do with education? Nothing! This is just one more attempt by the Catholic Church to rule peoples' lives. As if the brainwashing wasn't enough...
We are all atheists, I just believe in one less god than most people. If you think about why you don't believe in the other gods (Allah, Buddah, Jehova, Shiva, Yaheah) then you should have no problem understanding why I don't believe in yours'...
You're absolutely right Mary. The Szablewski's knew about the guidelines of the school. If they feel that strongly about the hair issue, send him to public school. Most Catholic schools have a handbook with guidelines that must be complied with. If one can't live with the rules, then don't send them to Catholic school. BTW, what the Szablewski's are doing is very commendable.
I have a lot of empathy for cancer patients, and I applaud the boy's motives. However, having a neat appearance matters when you apply for a job or want to fit into corporate culture. Most educational institutions like to "prepare" their students for the inevitable as most work places do want conformity to their own rules - once we become an employee, we are not "free agents" as Barbara Ehrenreich describes working for corporate America in her book "Nickel and Dimed". Private schools are notorious for dress code rules right down to the nail polish on your pinky finger!
What the school could have done is make a positive deal out of it, chronicling the boy's donation, and giving exceptions to students who document their altruistic purpose of "breaking" the rules.
Who really knows what Jesus really looked like? People believe what they want when it comes to religion. I am a Christian, but I don't care what Jesus Christ looked like because his looks weren't the main reason he died for us. We are all God's children, and he loves us all no matter what we look like. America is all about control even when it comes to religion, and its ridiculous. God loves me who am I, why can't everyone else? People are just sad these days.
Doubt Jesus had long hair. Renaissance paintings of the blue eyed fair skinned Jesus depicts a skinny effeminate looking guy with long dreads but it was against customs of that day.
Paul gave insight to mens hair lengths saying that even nature itself speaks against a man having long hair.
But..really now..how much hair does the project require ? Seems to me that the kids got more than enough to donate..and then some.
Besides..the kid does kind of look like a little girl.
As this is a private school the solution is real simple. Stop sending your child to the garbage school. Take the tuition and pay it to a school that takes real steps to educate your child and doesn't waste time by claiming a long haired child is incapable of learning. BTW don't the pictures the Catholics claim to be Jesus have long hair?
What I find disturbing about the whole affair is they boot this kid for trying to donate hair for cancer patients yet the priests who were pedophiles were protected for years.
btw, there were no photographs back then. if you want to use that example "Jesus had long hair" then we also need to think that the pharophs of egypt were beautiful and catlike. just saying...
also, the problem behind this article has nothing to do with hair length
My daughter is 13. Every other year she grows out her hair to donate to Locks of Love. She has cut her hair 3 times in 6 years donating over a yard of hair for wigs for children w/ cancer. We are very, very proud of our daughter's generosity and selflessness as I am sure this Mom is proud of her son. In the end, it doesn't matter what others say or do as long as we know that what we are doing is right.
Will 21: doesnt the bible say that it's a shame for a male to have long hair, I mean why if you are a guy would you want to look like a girl???? And no, I do not believe that Jesus had long hair!
Yes suseq..that's what is written in 1 Cor 11:14. " Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to Him ?"
We both basically said the same thing.
I think there's quite a bit of evidence leaning towards the Shroud of Turin being legit. It provides a view of Christ having shoulder length hair. Which IMO..isn't long ..nor short.
I went to a catholic grade school 25 years ago and the rule was that the boys hair had to be short and girls had to wear skirts and their hair had to be neat. This is not new! This is just a mother who did not get her way and she is now playing to the press for all she is worth hopping to get her way.
Cut the boys hair or don't but recognize that you have to follow the same rules that everyone else does at that school. You are not special and there should be no special concession for you or your child because you choose not to cut his hair.
Once again when she enrolled him he was allowed to have long hair. She told them about what they were doing and they said as long as it was cut before kindergarten then its ok. Then they changed the rule.
Private schools can change any rules they want from year to year and sometimes you have to decide if you want to continue to send your child to that school. If she does not like the rules then enroll your child in a different school. The fact that she called the press to watch him get his hair cut and then did not cut his hair because the press was not coming out in the rain is very telling about the character of this mother and of what she is after which is publicity and attention. I have no sympathy for her just because she thinks her child should be exempt from the rules that all the other children have to follow.
They could send him to a public school, but a private school is to give him more options as to what he wants to believe in when he grows up. It's also suppose to be about better education, but I grew up going through a catholic school through the 8th grade and I didn't notice a difference. The fact is that the catholic religion is supposed to explain that God made us different and that it's ok to be different. It's not supposed to outcast a person because they have long hair. Religion has become a big buisness like everything else. They want people to conform to what is believed to be clean cut because other parents might view that as "dirty" and may refrain from sending their kid there, which means the school won't get their money. I never did like the catholic schools, but that doesn't mean I don't believe in the religion.
Please! The school has rules, no long hair, period. Respect it. There is no reason that everyone should bend over backwards to accomodate this one child. Why? Its a distraction. Cut it off and donate it to the cancer kids. If you dont like the rule, then send him to another school. This liberal anything goes society and I am special let me do what I want attitude is not what made this country what it is, or shoud I say what it used to be....there are far more important issues to be worrying about than this long haired kid and his mother's idea....doubt he even cares at his age. Its about her, not about him....
The school missed a grand opportunity to actually teach something. Yes, they have rules but after seeing what this young man and his mother were trying to do, they could have done something like this...
Send a letter home to each of the other students explaining the situation and note that the long hair rule is being waived...then state if any other student wished to join them, the long hair rule would be waived for them as well. They could have turned this into such a good thing...
Sometimes, we need to reevaluate situations and modify our rules when the need dictates.
mel2877.........that was probably the most intelligent post on this entire thread. The mom should be ashamed of herself for causing a media frenzy because she wanted her 15 minutes of fame.
One thing was correct though......the child is the victim.....of this mother.
Hey Kevin-2582281... Long hair is a distraction?! Wow! How... ignorant of you! Oh and yeah, I agree with you - there are more important issues than worrying about someone's hair length! For the school, that is! You know, I am a Christian and I know that it is important to obey authority but the Catholics... Well, there may be some that are doing good and have right hearts. However, the majority of their high power leader all they care about is the law; rules and regulations and how to make everybody think God is mad at them and is going to "strike them down"! Well, read the bible... Jesus was NEVER about rules! In fact He ate and spent time with the worst of the worst, people like prostitutes and tax collectors, the kind of people that the religious leaders of His time wouldn't even cross the road to spit on. He loved people, he understood and forgave them. He let them know that He came to save them and accepted them for who they were and met them at their level! My point is this "rule" about the hair is actually about the rule. They want to control everything and they are not interested in looking at why this little boy has his hair long. Yes he should cut his hair when it is long enough to be usable for those who make the wigs. This little boy's mom shouldn't change schools... She should change denominations. Better yet go non-denominational and find a church who actually cares more about people rather than "the rules". You know... Kind of like Jesus did!
ok here is the thing...the catholic school isn't saying that they wont allow him to cut his hair for cancer patients, so chill about how great locks of love is. I'm not being insensitive, because i have also previously donated my hair, and no how fabulous it is. but cool it on the sob stories ok? also, why on earth did the mother wait to long to get it cut? i can understand if there was a storm, and she honestly cant change the weather, but why did she schedule it a day before school started???? this is just other case of a mother wanting her fame. good for the school for not letting him in, not because of the boy, (because i support his cause) because what the mother did was very immature.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
How do you know Jesus wasn't bald? Because someone who never saw him painted him with long hair 1500 years after he died? I'm unaware of any contemporary images of Jesus.
It's a private school. They can do what they want. In America, we are all free to be stupid, and the school is vigorously exercising that right.
Why would you want to send your kid to that kind of a backward place anyhow?
"I think that the church better take a look at the length of Jesus's hair! Last I knew it was long and wavy...or at least that is how he is portrayed!"
It's a proven fact that Jesus had an Afro, that was neatly trimmed, like Obama's.
Actually, he would have looked more like Obama, than the way he is portrayed.
"i've seen jesus and spoke with him. he's black and has an afro. he's pretty disgusted with the 'his' religion has gone and says, basically, if someone goes to church, they're not a true christian and are worshipping a false idol."
How do you know Jesus wasn't bald? Because someone who never saw him painted him with long hair 1500 years after he died? I'm unaware of any contemporary images of Jesus.
Well, if you believe that the Bible is a legitimate story of Jesus' life, you would have to assume his hair was long because of the story of him washing his apostles' feet and drying them with his hair. I doubt a bald man could do that.
Jesus lived in a different time. I'm sure personal hygeince, clean teeth and B.O. were different in those days, too.
Jesus likely would have told you "swallow your pride and honor the authority of the school." Unless of course, you're a modern convenience "cafeteria style" Christian and you continualy equate yourself to being your own Son of God and no one can tell you anything, nor comply to any standard or tradition.
Actually, Jesus DID NOT have long hair, contrary to popular belief. It was actually a dishonor for a man to have long hair in Bible times. (1 Corinthians 11:14) The only men mentioned in the Bible with long hair were Nazarites, and they took a vow for a period of time or forever not to let have a razor cut their hair, like Sampson or John the Baptist.
True in most pictures on Jesus he always looks very thin with long hair. WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.
Don't argue about the schools foolish reasonings, take the boy to another school. The End.
Don't you all realize that the story of Jesus was all fairy tales of a man who sought good for people. A lot of people do that today. It was exaggerated to gain control over other peoples' lives. Look at the catholic church today, it has sway over a billion people and they all cowtow to the pope. Whatever the "holy see" says. What a crock. That man is no closer to god than you or I am. He just made his way up the ranks to the top of a multi-billion corporation, kinda like Lee Iaccoa or Donald Trump.
If Jesus were to return today no one would believe him and the church itself would crucify him for blasphemy. Then we would have to go through the whole damn thing all over again...
Hey, maybe Donald Trump can donate that horrible "combover" to cancer wigs...
and..... most of the pictures, urr PAINTINGS we look at were painted by EUROPEAN artists, MASTERS, YES, but Europeans. So, they painted Jesus as they thought what he would have LOOKED LIKE-WHITE, and long haired, because presumably, scissors were not invented, or were crude, or whatever they thought. There was a show on the HISTORY CHANNEL about a year ago, on JESUS and what would he look like, where he lived, etc. The scholars, archeologists that did the show felt that he would have had AT THE MOST, SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR. This was due to his class, working man and due to the climate of the area of the middle east. HOT. He would also probably have been CLEAN SHAVEN, again, due to his family's working class AND not being a high rabbi. (OR as clean shaven as one could have been 2,000 years ago without the invention of a Gillette razor.) AND OF COURSE, HIS SKIN COLOR at the lightest would have been OLIVE, again due to the area, climate. We are so used to seeing the stain glass windows of Jesus being white with lt. brown hair, and all the renissaisse pics of the same. ALL THE IMAGINATION OF THE ARTISTS-with the insistance possibly OF THE VATICAN.
Vickie, you need to review the literature. It was a prostitute who used her hair to dry the feet of Jesus. Jesus used a towel he had wrapped around his waste when he dried the disciples' feet.
EastRowanDad, you might be one to something. If the priests think he's a girl, maybe they'll leave him alone. Maybe all Catholic boys should go around in drag until they are of legal age of consent when the priests will lose interest.
- For those suggesting the boy donate his hair now -- Hair is generally required to be at least 8-12 inches long, depending on the organization. That length is determined (and cutting is done) by putting the hair in a ponytail or braids, then cutting above the rubber band to keep it together, fastening it additionally at the end and midway down. It takes anywhere from 6 to 20 donations to make one wig.
I doubt the boy's hair is long enough, and definitely couldn't be grown out during the summer as some suggested.
- For those who are arguing about what Jesus looked like, one of my favorite songs is "Some children see him". I especially like the version done by Perry Como on his Greatest Christmas Songs album (1999).
Ah, Alfred Burt carol on a poem by Wihla Hutson. I have sung that many, many Christmas eves. Thanks for reminding me. "The children in each different place Will see the baby Jesus' face Like theirs, but bright with heavenly grace, And filled with holy light. Oh set aside each earthly thing, and with thy heart as offering, Come worship now the infant King, 'Tis love that's born tonight!"
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
What you have done is extremely commendable. I have seen children with cancer lose their hair and they become very sad and feel ugly. To have a wig given to them makes them feel alive. Don't worry about not being able to get your son into a Catholic school. As long as you got the bucks they'll take you, no questions asked. Trust me. Have son who is 34 that went thru the Catholic school system along with his brother and sister and I must tell you it's disgusting. My grand children are now attending Public school and they are every bit if not more so a true Christian than some of the kids in the Catholic school. Good Luck.
So, Just when is the kid, (Mom) going to make good on the promise to donate the locks? Why not now?, And let the kids hair again until the start of Next School Year? Are you all talk Mom? (cut the hair once a year, before school starts. Sounds like Mom wants to be in the spot light and make a non-issue a issue.
What I got from ALL THIS is.... Mom decided FOR HER SON, that HE WAS GOING TO GROW HIS HAIR, whether he wanted to, or not, FOR THE MEMORY OF HIS GRANDFATHER, who he can't possibly remember, AND instead of just getting it DONE WITH AND GETTING IT CUT, MOM is making a BIG, STINKING DEAL OUT OF IT, getting publicity, making her son an oddball. Did I get it right? Okay, sometimes rules change. It stinks, but it does. My PROBLEM with this whole thing, is that the son, he is too young to make this decision to grow his hair like this and donate to charity. WHY DIDN'T SHE DO IT? 4 yos do what THEIR MOTHERS WANT THEM TO. (why I don't believe Brangelina when they say Shiloh insists on wearing those clothes and demanded that her hair be cut that way. At 4. NO WAY). I was taught, AT CHURCH, that true acts of charity are done with out attention being called to them, they should be done anonymously. (if possible, if not, you do not call attention, put yourself in the paper, etc) God knows what you did, that is all that matters, but do get a receipt for the IRS. Now, in all disagreements, there are 3 sides to every story. It sounds like we had people acting like children on both sides. The Church has rules. One reason for the haircuts, and dress codes, is so no one child stands out, not so they cannot express individuality, be to avoid distractions and to avoid class distinctions, None appear poorer, or richer than others. No one is forcing her to send him to these schools and no one is keeping her from taking her son to the hair salon. SO? where is the problem?
The hair has to be at least ten inches long. And, again, a Christian Church has lost the meaning of helping one another. Why do most old white bald men insist that the younger generations look like them. If this doesn't make you doubt the Catholic Church on top of everything they have done, you really do not think for yourself. I'm glad Mom got the spotlight. It is an issue. I hope this brings out the best in classrooms and every child thinks of something to do for another sick child.
Great idea. Worthy concept. But I think it's about getting 15 minutes of fame for momma, sis and the adorable, albeit, female looking tot. His photo kind of looks like a modeling shot. Hmmmm......
I have grown my hair for the project"Locks of Love" that makes wigs out of hair I donate.Growing your hair for one year most likely will not let it reach 10''-12''. It took me 2 1/2 years to get 16" the first time I did it.I applaude the kid for doing this....I am now on my 4th round of growing my hair for them and I'll be doing it again after I get it cut in 2 more years.
Hair grows roughly 6 inches per year (each person varies a little). So if you are going to donate the 10 inches, it will take somewhere around 2 years give or take a bit.
First, I'm sure that mom has some say in this, maybe planted the idea in the kid's head, but if you think that the child isn't an active participant in wanting to donate his hair then apparently you've never had children. A 4 year-old is way smarter then people give them credit for, in some instances probably smarter than some adults because their views are not based on societal stereotypes. They definetly have their own personalities, that's why so many parents get into power struggles with their preschoolers.
This hair thing has very little to do with religion at all, I went to a Catholic school and had long hair, this is about the power trip of the admin. The school here did change the rules in the middle of the game and is punishing a child because the parent didn't bow down to their commands, that speaks volumes to their morals and values. They sure aren't following the teachings of Jesus.
And to the posters that are calling this kid names...takes a mighty powerful person to pick on a 4 year old! And the hair does have to be at least 10 inches long before it can be accepted for donation.
if you got the buck?i'm so proud of you for beable to send your kids to those kinda school,do you want a cookie too?you must be so disappointed that your grandkids aren't so lucky..
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
WOW im SHOCKED about this! Im Lutheran, and my father was a Lutheran minister, and the lengths of a boys hair should in no way matter!! Jesus had long hair!!! Come on these people are out of control, and should be looked at for abusing power!
How's it any different than school districts mandating dress codes, or cut-off dates for birthdays to figure out when you can start school?
As if the universal Catholic Church gives a rat's a** that your dad was a Lutheran minister...I'm sure he was a self-proclaimed expert on personal interpretation of the Bible, too. Since you knew your dad, does that mean you're any better of a "Christian" merely by osmosis or proximity to the horse's mouth?
Tom, Thanks for reminding me. I was a Lutheran until I became 17 (60 years ago) and realized the whole church hypocracy. I still go to weddings and funerals, but although Jesus was a great man, churches SUCK!
Whether Jesus had long hair has nothing to do with today. In fact, the popular depiction of Jesus (with long hair) has not always been the only recreation of his possible appearance. I hope you are not going from the Hollywood movies and Commercial Christmas cards as your guide.
As the Church stated, the child is blameless. I'm pretty sure he could careless whether his hair is long or short. The fact that it was allowed to grow since he was 2, 2 and 1/2? ... seems more of a suggestion from his Mother than something a 2 or 3 year old would come up with on his own.
I know a lot of Mothers that just can't bear to see their little darling get a hair cut. I just wonder if this is really about the gift, as she states. Or more about willfulness on the part of the Mother, even to the point of defying the rules (yes they changed, them - I read that too). But Catholic Schools have always had stricter rules, uniforms and regimentation than Public schools. Many parents find that to be one of the most beneficial parts of the program.
A little touch of humility is good for the soul. Childern are too much the center of a Parents world, they need to know that other kids are just as important as they have been led to believe they are.
I hope the School has the fortitude to stand its ground against... another, "My Kid is Special" ... Hovering parent. The husband, wisely sees this for what it is, and has made his opinion known ... now its up to the mom to decide if the school she chose to educate her child, just might know what they are doing. Or, she could Home School or send him to less structured environment?
The Catholic school system is supposed to teach children about the word of God, about love and acceptance, and right from wrong... God doesn't care how long your hair is. Its all about the money and the power to these people, its sad and pathetic.
From what I hear from those who actually attended Catholic schools, the main curriculum concept taught is fear and dislike of nuns. Its the reason why my mom is an atheist.
"From what I hear from those who actually attended Catholic schools, the main curriculum concept taught is fear and dislike of nuns. Its the reason why my mom is an atheist."
"What a stupid comment."
Sounds perfectly rational, to me. I knew a girl, in high school that was raised Pentecostal. Once she got away from her parents, she turned into a real party girl, pretty much rejecting Christianity.
I went to Catholic school and have the scars to prove it.. it was about fear, rigidity and conformance. There was no coloring outside the lines, no thinking outside the box. We were not taught things like empathy, tolerance and compassion. I would hope things have changed, but I don't think they have..
Here are some things I learned in Catholic school:
Even though God loves everyone, he is NOT ok with female priests. I’m still waiting for someone to explain why God doesn’t respect me enough to let me run things.
God is simultaneously three people and one person, which apparently means that 1/3 of God killed himself and somehow that saved me from eternal damnation but apparently that didn’t remove the curse of original sin. Of course, the only ticket out of that is infant baptism. However, if a baby dies before baptism, they go to heaven anyway. I’m still not sure if I was really born a sinner though.
God only hears my apologies if I tell them to some old dude through a screen and then say 10 Hail Marys.
It’s ok to tell a church full of young children that Santa Clause isn’t real. Merry Christmas, you sniveling babies!!
I could keep going and going but here’s the most important….Questioning the lack of logic in the dogma is not ok and will frustrate the hell out of your teachers!
This is the United States of America, I am sorry, but money is god. It is the God in which is trusted. Since the currency went fiat, we need a god to believe IN because there is no solid basis.
My point being here, take for example, MSNBC. The only damn thing they give a rip about is the cash flow. They aren't doing THIS out the the kindness and goodness of their heart! They would never do anything for free, not for anyone. They are a corporation, just like the rest. And like all businesses, they are here to serve a "consumer," not people.
With the church, it all comes down to making you feel bad over ideologies that you were pressed into as a child, forcing you to donate or tithe to the church. When the church opens a school, there is no fundamentalism grip for which the church has to bend you, the person, around. The only thing they have is money which is why it costs so much for bitter nuns to attack your children with sticks. Then things become corrupted as they are inclined to be when dealing with money, and you get twisted fat rich businessmen denying a small child, just out of toddlerism, school in a safe and religious learning environment due to an idea that does not conform with the prejudiced regularity which they must control due to bias and sexism in the school section of the church.
Christianity is always about the control and the money, school or church.
Yes Marika, "schools have rules" but it would be nice if schools had rules that were based on some sort of reason rather than just arbitrariness.
What "price" will this child pay? The "price" of daring to do a simple act of kindness to help another child suffering from cancer? And exactly how can a child's long hair "cause a disruption". In case you haven't noticed, long hair has been a fashion for males since the late 1960's!
As far as teasing and bullying goes, such spiteful acts are done by spiteful children and any excuse will do for a bully because his motivation is spite and spite alone. A bully will come up with ANY reason to bully, whether it be the length of another child's hair, the hair color, the color of the other child's skin, his height, his weight etc, etc, etc. Changing one's appearance does not stop a bully from being vicious because the bully will come up with another reason to be spiteful or continue to be spiteful for no reason at all! The solution to bullying is to correct and discipline the bully, not to insist that other students not engage in behaviour that will attract the attentions of bullies.
The fact that Jesus did have long hair is hardly a "silly argument". If the philosophy of Jesus is worth following then why would his personal appearance not be worth emulating? In addition, long hair has nothing to do with personal hygiene. Many people, both men and women wear their hair long, and as long as it is washed regularly it will be as clean as short hair.
@Kash - That's why people need to read the Bible for themselves and stop falling victim to false reasoning. Of course God in NOT 3 in one, that is not reasonable. God is one and Jesus is one and the holy spirit is NOT A PERSON.
These teachings are so hard to understand because they are make believe, the Bible DOES NOT teach the trinity, immortality of the soul or of babies going to heaven or hell baptised or not. The Bible doesn't even teach firey torment in hell. These things simply are not true.
READ YOUR BIBLE PEOPLE. Its not that hard, all the answers are in there.
"Reading the Bible" is also up there on activities that encourage atheism, at least for several ex-christians I know. Personally I thought it was a boring tale that could have used some ninjas, maybe a few Tarantino non-linear plot devices or more than just one zombie (like having an undead Jesus running around wouldn't have spread Solanum virus like wildfire).
Marika, I could not agree more with your take on this. First of all, however kind & unselfish of a donation it may be on the mother's part, why is she using her son's head to fulfill her charitable goals? Why doesn't she grow her own hair long & give it to cancer patients? I'd like to hear what her son says about this. I'll bet he gets made fun of all the time & probably wants it short!
Also, anyone who uses "Jesus had long hair" as an argument is an idiot. Even if he did have long hair (but all historical references tell us he did not), what does that have to do with modern standards of appropriate dress for children in a morally-guided institution? Nothing. Would you send your son to school wearing only the simple loin cloth Jesus is portrayed as wearing on the cross? No, probably not.
Secondly, people in this country don't seem to understand the difference between a public & private institution. A Catholic school can deny admission to anyone for pretty much any reason (short of their skin color or national origin) if they're not receiving funding from the state. Even public schools though implement dress codes & hold the right to enforce them.
Honestly, I don't think the school is all that wrong in this situation. You can't just let one kid stretch the rules just because his mother's reasons may be altruistic. Then inevitably other parents will whine & cry about the rules not having been bent for them, for whatever reason. Even if the dress code is dumb, which agreed I think a kid should be able to wear his hair however long he wants BY HIS OWN CHOICE, it doesn't make them wrong for enforcing it.
I think everyone in this country understands the difference between private and public schools. I, also, think that they understand the difference between a self centered code and a code of love for the sick. Too bad the church did not see this as a way to teach love for one another and have as many children take part in the excerise...making sure they understand that this was a lesson in the one thing the church is not teaching...love. It's too bad the Christian Churches forgot about our Lord, and now only preach politics.
You people who think the mother is wrong and that the school is right really have no sence of christianity. I am a christian, I am a sunday school teacher in the adult class, and you tell me where in the Bible that it says Jesus, my lord and savior, had short hair. If you read this story you can see the rules were changed after registry. If you were in the parents shoes you would feel the same way. This child did nothing wrong and I admire the parents for standing up for their child. Befor you judge people you need to have the facts, and remember there is seperation between church and state. Be prepared to show in the Bible where it says no long hair on a boy. Thn you can be taken seriously. Read the book of romans and you can see that it is an abomination for these priests to molest children, yet the catholic church slaps them on the wrist and moves them to another church. There is nothing wrong with long hair, especially for such a noble cause. What bafoons you are to blame the parents. Tell the church "He who is without sin, cast the first stone. This child deserves praise for his efforts! Bravo!
Marika, I see you are the one who is casting stones. Like I said i am a christian which means I know I am not perfect. As for literacy, I am a published Author, how about you? And yes I read, study and know more about God's word than you can ever imagine in your little flash in the pan life. If you want to judge me on spelling then you truely are pathetic. I will not bother you anymore simply because I will not battle wits with a witless wonder. The family and the boy have my full support.
marika...shame on you. The mother is not setting her son up for grief (evidently that's your job) but teaching concern for others. Marika you are one selfish person. Yep, think about the consequences of helping others. Do you really think a four year old doesn't understand the concept of love and helping others. (did I mention that you are one selfish person). I am so glad that she is using her child to express her ideas....helping others in need. WOW, what a concept, but lost on you.
And to another comment above....So the grandfather died when the child was 10 months old. My grandchildren do not remember my mother who died of breast cancer, they still buy "pink" labels" and give donations.
Marika, apparently the people who are replying don't understand.
If I understand what you are saying, you believe that, if it WAS the boy's decision, it is a noble decision. However, from the quotes from the mother, it seems like SHE wanted him to grow out his hair. In and of itself, this would not be such a problem. However, when she doesn't get her way and then makes a big stink about it on the national news, that says one thing: "I WANT PUBLICITY FOR THE GOOD I AM DOING!!!!! (through my son)." Please also notice that the first photo you see when opening this article is a proffessional photo. It almost looks like a headshot. Seems a bit suspicious to me.
I definitely agree that the PRIVATE institution of the Catholic school has the right to make rules. Hello, it is PRIVATE for a reason?
Now, for all of you Bible-thumpers who are going to see this as me bashing a charitable work, um...well, no. I am a PK, both of my parents are PKs, as are their parents (well, a couple). I fully understand the prospect of charity, of giving of your heart. When giving of the heart becomes giving for recognition is when it stops becoming charitable. Not necessarilly on the little boy's part.
The rules changed at the beginning of the year and the mother waits until THE DAY BEFORE THE DEADLINE to cut her son's hair? And then says she will invite the media to the hair cutting? Somebody needs to teach this woman the six P's: Prior Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance. And humility. She should learn this too.
I am in FULL support of this generous 4-year-old boy, if this is his decision.
P.S. DC, I am a published author too, but that doesn't mean I forget how to use the spellcheck button.
With regards to your earlier question of where, in the Bible, does it say that Jesus had short hair, please see the following: 1 Corinthians 11:14. I have looked it up in both my NKJ and my NIV. now, this does not say that Jesus himself had short hair, but it DOES say that men should. It also says women were created for the glory of man. I may not agree with it myself, but if that is how the Catholic school wants to run things, then that is their right, as a non-government-funded school.
P.P.S. Is anyone else tired of parents exploiting their children when they do not get their way? THE MEDIA IS NOT A MEDIATOR!
Marika - I see that you have left, but just in case....
What "price" will this child pay?
The "price" of daring to do a simple act of kindness to help another child suffering from cancer?
And exactly how can a child's long hair "cause a disruption"?
Here are the questions that you did not answer. Re-posted by your request since you claim to not be able to find them in the original post.
Btw - the tone of your posts are so nasty, are you an unhappy person or something? I hope that you can find a little peace. It must be a hard life if you are always so riled up.
Marika in post #6.8 said, "As for Jesus having long hair, that is a silly argument. I doubt modern people would like to emulate many of the customs of the time, especially those concerning hygiene and dress."
Which clearly associates long hair with hygiene.
Marika then says in post #6.14, "I guess I could try to explain to you the meaning of what I said. (Hint -- it had nothing whatsoever to do with the cleanliness of long hair.)"
I think the meaning is plain of your original statement is plain to anyone who can read the English language. Your statement clearly associates long hair with the habits of cleanliness of people in the days of Jesus by mentioning long hair and then following that with a sentence referring to hygeine and dress in his day. If that's not what you meant in your original statement then you might want to rephrase it because it certainly reads that way.
Marika then says, "However, I suspect it would be an exercise in futility, so I'll just leave you to your non sequitur nonsense."
Which was not only quite a rude response to my civil comments but quite absurd when one considers that Marika did not make a rational response to any of the points I made in my post #6.10. So as far as making statements that are non sequitur, you appear to be considerably guilty of that yourself.
You might want to acquaint yourself with the term "projection" as used in psychoanalysis. I means that one accuses others of one's own faults or deficiencies.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
I think that it is a wonderful thing that you are doing! I know a lady who's 6 yr old niece just got diagnosed with Leukimia(sp?) a couple months ago and it broke my heart when I heard about the losing hair meltdown. So you guys are doing a wonderful thing! The whole Catholic School thing is over rated.. The child wont learn anything different than he would in a sunday religion class. I'm catholic and I went to a catholic school in Kansas and I will never submit my children to that. It is abuse of power that they "think" they have! Im sorry that you have to go through that. Just remind your son that he is doing a wonderful thing. I also think that people who are calling him names are cold hearted. I will call him an Angel who was here to help other children! You have wonderful hearts!
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
As the mother of a son with hair half way down his back and a CANCER SURVIVOR I think this is outragus! What does long hair have to do with anything? The girls have long hair, but boys can't? Isn't that sexist? What that boy is doing is a great thing. I've lived in a Ronald McDonald house full of cancer children for months, and something as little as a wig for these kids was a major self esteem boost. Think of the pictures up in many churches, Catholic included, of Jesus. As the person before me stated, did he not have long wavy hair? They should appreciate the child is doing something great for other kids, not stress over his appearance. I am sure he can go to public school, but it is the principle at this point.
Men have had long hair for much longer than they have had it cut. Only in this uptight 20th century do people think they have the right to judge people by the length of their hair.
I'm not religious, but I'm pretty sure they say something like judge not lest thee be judged themselves.
If I had seen a picture of this kid and not a caption, I would have sworn it was a girl. Regardless, you can't bring the girls can have long hair argument into it without the implications that can have. Why is it okay for girls to have short hair, but boys can't wear skirts or makeup without being made fun of??
My brother died of cancer at 15. He really didn't care about going bald, but family members have donated to locks of love and continue to do so. My male cousin is one of them, but he's in his 20s.
I agree with Heather. I am glad this boy is growing his hair out to donate it, but I wouldn't have been able to tell if this was a boy or a girl had there not been a caption. If I was the parent, I dont think I could let my boy look like a girl. Maybe once he gets older, he could grow it out then?
I totally agree. My son has hair down to the backs of his knees. I do this for the same reason as this mother...he grows it for wigs. It does not affect his schooling, which is done at home, as he has straight A's. This is just a reason for the school to be defiant against a parent's wishes. To the mother, I say, "Home school him. YOU set the rules, not some institution."
So now the parents and society is telling the boy that his effort wasn't worthwhile anyways even if his hair length was 2 inches chorter for cutting a couple of months early? He's a kid, he'll get over it. Give him a Big Mac or KFC meal and all is well.
Too bad he now thinks he can do whatever, as society will bend for you no matter your plight or goals. Wait till he applies for college, or lips off to a teacher, or shoplifts later in life...sorry, budy, follow the rules and suck it up.
Who determines what boys and girls should look like? Different societies have different "ideas" of what a boy or girl should look like. Do you also think that girls shouldn't have short hair? Should the school make a rule that girls should all have shoulder lenght or longer hair?
Because boys should look like boys and girls should look like girls its not sexist.
Why? What happens if a boy has long hair and "looks like a girl"?
Too bad he now thinks he can do whatever, as society will bend for you no matter your plight or goals. Wait till he applies for college, or lips off to a teacher, or shoplifts later in life...sorry, budy, follow the rules and suck it up.
So you think by one instance of doing something generous that originally was NOT against the rules until the rules were changed arbitrarily will make this kid an anarchist that will never learn to be a reasonable citizen? um take it down a notch dude! I'm sure this child will have plenty of opportunities to learn to follow rules in his life - just like the rest of us.
It is about bending the rules. How far past preschool should rules be bent.
If you read the article you would notice that he wasn't bending the rules and in fact the parent checked with the school. But then the school decided to change the rules on the parent.
Shall we bend them for illegal aliens? Shall we bend them for the CEO's who are taking huge bonuses? Should we have bent them for Nixon?
How do these things even equate to this situation? in case you haven't noticed all rules are not equal. I bet there are "rules" that you break on a habitual basis.
I am big on following rules myself, unless the rule seems to be random and arbitrary. Exactly what is the issue with long hair on a boy? It is obviously not safety, or hygiene because then the girls would be expected to have short hair as well.so what is it? Why is it bad for a boy to have long hair?
Please anyone who thinks long hair on boys is bad please explain what the danger is.
gimmeabreakoradrink, sometimes rules say a lot about a society, and this rule is no different, it sucks. What rule in life says to be a male you must have short hair, and to be a female, you must have long hair? When I was in high school, they had the same rule. I let my hair grow, just to see what they would say. When they told me I had to get it cut, I told them if they were going to play that game, they had to tell every girl, that had short hair to let it grow back out, because, by their standard, if it was not fitting for a boy to have long hair, it was not fitting for a girl to have short hair. Not one short haired girl was told they had to let it grow back out, so needless to say, I never cut mine, because, as I told them, I was willing to go to court over it. I`m now 55, with hair down to the middle of my back. Hair length has nothing to do with what makes one a male or female. It doesn`t make one smart or stupid either. Society loves to label and control everything, that`s the problem.
Coming from Kansas where it seems like everyone is Catholic, I feel that something the Catholic church preaches is that being different is wrong and that conformity is good. They also are very against gay people and transvestites and several other things, but the long hair is an issue for them because it is a "feminine" quality according to the church.
I like the thing about Jesus having long and wavy hair i try to use that against my principle (i go to catholic school) and he has a response that Jesus didn't have a dress code(he also says that about shaving)....i always feel like i can say something else to counter that but i never can get anything...I think that if i have a good argument and stand my ground i can maybe get him thinking about it.
"I am big on following rules myself, unless the rule seems to be random and arbitrary."
Wrong, dragynlady. The rule was changed between school years, well, WELL in advance of this woman's "look at me!" attention whore haircut. She had PLENTY of forewarning. Even now she's had a full month AFTER and she still hasn't complied. Why?
There was nothing arbitrary about changing the pre-K rule to match the rest of the school, either.
There was nothing arbitrary about changing the pre-K rule to match the rest of the school, either.
The rule itself is arbitrary, because there is no rational or compelling reason for the rule. Why is it so important that a boy have short hair? What is the reason for creating the rule?
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
Jesus' hair was long... It is the soul that the school and Church should be concerned with. If Jesus walked this earth, would you turn him away too? Shame on you condemning this poor child for doing what is morally right for the sake of those children who don't have hair. Would you not allow a child with a bald head admittance to school do to cancer? This is now an issue of the school's morality or the lack there of... I don't think I would allow a child to attend a school that condemns a child doing the God's work. I would love to hear comment from Locks Of Love which my children have donated their hair in the past.

well, let's see - Mother is just trying to cause trouble. If she was so "Jesus" loving, why doesn't she cut off her hair and donate it to cancer ? She is just looking for publicity, what a loser ! The kid didn't even KNOW his grandfather, he was only 10 months old when he died ! give me a break ! Mother, cut your hair off and give it away in "Memory of your Father" Also, why do you need a camera crew in there when your boy finally gets his hair cut, for what ? More publicity ? Why don't you use yourself, not your kid ! A good deed doesn't need to be videotaped, why don't you just do it without all the hoopla ? Because that's what you want, publicity !
Hair has to be a certain length to donate. If his hair isn't the appropriate length, it can't be used since the hair has to be attached to the wig base and then cut/styled.
I have donated my hair to Locks of Love in honor of my grandmother. I commend the mother in honoring the grandfather, and in doing so, showing her son that helping others is good as well as giving him a connection of sorts to his grandfather.
To Kate Spade: The mom did all of this for publicity and is only trying to start trouble?? I take it you know the woman on a personal level to know that much about her?
It doesnt matter if the child knew the grandfather or not.. its their business what they are doing and their reason for doing it. It is the catholic school that started this, not the mom, all she did was take her son to school.
Good on her for making an issue over it and bringing it out in the open. I can't help wonder if they banned images of Jesus in their school since all images/paintings, etc... show him with long hair.
Its simply not a good reason to shut the door in a childs face, which is something that no decent, true christian would ever do to anyone.
In my opinion people should be able to wear their hair long or short,. male or female. It should not be the business of anyone else.
if the mother is such a good do-er, why don't she get her hair cut off ????? Why does she want a movie crew to film the boy's haircut ? give me a break !
cut your hair & donate it, Mommy Dearest !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If she was so "Jesus" loving, why doesn't she cut off her hair and donate it to cancer ?
How do you know she hasn't? How do you know she could if she wanted to?
She is just looking for publicity, what a loser !
Your rush to judgment is decidedly un-Christlike.
Also, why do you need a camera crew in there when your boy finally gets his hair cut, for what ? More publicity ?
Isn't that the point? To create publicity for hair donations to cancer victims? I fail to see why this is wrong.
Well, it is a private school. Their rules or move on.
Rules have a reason; intelligent administrators know this and also know the occasions that call for exceptions to rules. When the administrator thinks "if I allow this, I have to allow everyone to do this", it would be reasonable to then think "if everyone grew their hair long to donate to cancer victims, that would be a wonderful thing", and then allow the exception.
"Rules have a reason; intelligent administrators know this and also know the occasions that call for exceptions to rules. When the administrator thinks "if I allow this, I have to allow everyone to do this", it would be reasonable to then think "if everyone grew their hair long to donate to cancer victims, that would be a wonderful thing", and then allow the exception."
Yeah, right. Allow this kid to grow his hair for cancer victims and every boy in the school will be the "exception" to the rule.
When it comes time to donate the hair, the little bastards will just get it cut and leave it on the cutting room floor.
Does anyone really believe that making exceptions to rules really works?
All it does is lead to more exceptions to the rules.
The Tea Party has my back on this one. While they say that they want the government out of our lives (except for our bedrooms and the results, thereof), they secretly want to control all of the other aspects of our lives, as well. Remember to vote for the Republican Tea Party candidate of your choice, tomorrow.
Kate, unless she wants to shave the kid's head bald, she needs to let it grow out, locks for love requires hair to be a certain legnth to be donated, otherwise it won't be long enough for the wig making process, and there for be unusable. And I happen to agree with most people on this discussion, since when does a person's hair legnth matter when it comes to the educational process? I mean unless they are rockin it Cousin It style, does it really matter, or have the religions become such an uptight bunch that the slightest deviation demands damnation? Seriously? I thought God gave us free will to be what we chose to be, not conform to what someone else thinks of as proper
I agree, kate seems to be overly angry at this mother. The school treated THEM wrong, a so called Christian school at that. Christianity does not teach us to shut doors in peoples face because they have long hair.
Their treatment of this woman and her child is wrong in every sense of the word.
Kate, you should start a private hate journal. We can all see you need to let off some steam, but it will be less embarrasing for you to do so without broadcasting your ridiculous, insensitive comments to the world.
Kate Spade, how do you know the child didn't make the suggestion on his own? Children do some wonderful things that we as adults can't appreciate. Maybe his mother was so taken by her son's generosity that she felt a little good news was worth letting someone know about???
Are you so jaded that you can't appreciate a 'good' news story?
If the mother was offering her kids hair on Ebay I could see where you might have some sort of objection. As it is, be quiet and let the child have his day.
Kate Spade, I am sort of with you on this...why does there need to be such a fuss and camera crew and publicity? Hair donation happens ALL the time. My kids have done it a few times without a press release. Plus it's a private school, it's well within their right and power to have a standard code of appearance. Do you know how many exceptions to a dress code a group of 300 families could come up with??
Yeah, right. Allow this kid to grow his hair for cancer victims and every boy in the school will be the "exception" to the rule.
When it comes time to donate the hair, the little bastards will just get it cut and leave it on the cutting room floor.
Then simply sign an agreement with the child and their parents who wish to grow their hair long; in the agreement state the goal length, who it will be donated to, etc. Once it reaches the stated goal length, they get it cut and give documentation to the school.
The point is, it is an entirely manageable process, and that is the job of school administrators. To manage; not to be automatons.
Does anyone really believe that making exceptions to rules really works?
All it does is lead to more exceptions to the rules.
All rules have exceptions. On this, there is no exception. It is not by choice but by reality. We don't make exceptions to rules -- we make rules; the exceptions come naturally.
I can't see how the school treated them wrong in any way. Any school public or private has rules. A private school tends to have more. Any one who enrolls at either knows this or at least should. So big freakin deal! they want a kid to get a haircut! Just like the rest of the kids. Also do you have any idea how much crap that kid would end up taking about his hair from the other little kids? Is it fair to him to make him stand out like a sore thumb from day one?
Geez Kate, lighten up..I think it's a wonderful idea. I don't want to get started on the Catholics schools or churches, because I could end up sounding like you. Full of hate. You don't even know the mom or the boy.
Puddle duck WTF does this have to do with voting? Yikes. I can't believe this $hit.
I went to Catholic school as a child, all the way through high school, and this does not surprise me one bit!!! Hey maybe the mom wants a camera crew there to inspire others to donate their hair...and yes it has to be a certain length and it cannot be processed or Locks of Love will not take it...as usual a lot of people on here have no idea what they are talking about.
If this is really going to be an issue for the school, then his mom should take him to an African American salon and have his hair braided....their are so many ways to braid a style, he wouldn't even have hair touching his collar, all the while letting it grow out! What's the school going to say then, that it's "too ethnic" for them?
kate full of hate - take a look on youtube - many people document the act of donating hair to Locks of Love.
Either way, donating hair is a wonderful thing to do. I'm very proud to be raising compassionate children - my pre-teen sons are on their second go-round. The public elementary and middle schools have no problem with it.
This family, and all those dealing with cancer deserve our compassion and support.
The Catholic Church made it "just a good deed". They made something more of it and I'm glad the mother is making news about it. And, the little boy is only four years old. Remember when a four year old was not in school. And to the mother, stay away from the Catholic Church, you will be happier.
How do you know what her plans are for her own hair? many assumptions are being made without valor. If the mother went to the school and was up front with them and was told it was OK then reneged, changing the "rules" who is really at fault? The mother that was told it was OK, or the people changing the rules after the fact?
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
Wow, Kate...who pissed in your cornflakes? Where do you get that train of thought? It's not about the mom, it's about the kid. So his hair is long...WTF difference does it make? Will the sun not rise in the morning? Will the moon not make an appearance tonight? A boy having long hair has no effect on his learning ability. The only kids being distracted are the ones who are too busy NOT STUDYING to keep their minds on their work.
That's one of the reason i think religion isn't true to it's beliefs. Their God says don't judge, but they do. Would they say that to Jesus who didn't have a crew-cut? Everyone is surpose to be children of this God, but these religious people treat everyone different. They were appointed into these postions by other humans, not by their God. So who are they to judge others?!!
God says don't judge. Okay, let's let all of those rapists and murderers out of jail. After all, who are we to judge? And, for that matter, let's get rid of all of those pesky laws and rules that literally hold society together. I mean, if we can't judge anyone for breaking a law or rule, why have them in the first place? If we have no laws and rules, well, then, let's just get rid of everyone who makes and enforces the rules. Bye-bye Congress. Later, Court system. Good riddance, police. They were all appointed to these positions by other humans, so obviously they have no power because they are not given the "divine right" to hold these positions.
I absolutely hate it when people make the "judge not lest ye be judged insomuch as ye have judged" argument because there MUST be judgement in society for it to work. It even exists in the animal kingdom. There are rules and laws; there are hierarchies, and there are punishments if the rules are broken.
We may not agree with all of the rules, but there is a reason for them. Personally, I dislike having to wear a uniform at work. I would much rather wear my hair the way I would like, paint my fingernails the color I want, and wear what I thing is proper. So obviously, it is not just the Catholic school that dictates appearance. They want their students to look "clean cut," which, to them, means uniforms. They probably have rules dictating the color of and how much make-up and nailpolish a female can wear, as well as the length of skirts. For males, this probably means a clean, trimmed moustache/beard, if any is allowed at all, and short hair.
These "religious people" are merely enforcing a rule based on appearance, not on religion. Every society has its own fashions and trends. This school is a mini-society, and, as such, has the right to dictate the fashions and trends, especially since all the children are there in that school because they or their parents WANT them to be there. This is a choice.
If a man went into the military and told his drill instructors that he was growing his hair out for Locks of Love, they would probably tell him he looks like a woman and to get it cut. They would probably give him a deadline to have it cut by. If he doesn't have it cut, there are consequences. Granted, this is a four year old boy, not an 18-year-old young man, and this is a private institution, not the military, but the ideas are the same.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
I think Joe means that when you speak with many Christian congregations there is an underlying judgmental, condescending attitude that can turn most people off.
"Which Joe seems to demonstrate nicely in labeling himself as better than religious types. Or maybe I just read too much into that."
If that's what he meant, I approve of his message.
If you don't embrace their religious mythology, they look down their noses at you or feel sorry for you. They are pathetic. I'm sure I would be going to Hell, if I believed that there is one.
I have a good question kind of in the vein of this: Why do you need religion to have faith? I am not religous either, I have faith, yes, but I do not see the need to conform to some institution with a man dressed in funny clothing that says he knows what God thinks. Thats no religion, thats arrogance
Eric, I agree. I was raised in a Lutheran church, went to a Catholic college where my theology class taught a smattering of world religions. What I took away from it is that we all have the same basic core beliefs (live a good life, be kind to those around you, etc) but the technicalities of individual organized religions are highly contradictory and I'm not so sure any one of 'em has it "right". So I consider myself a freelancer- I find peace and order in the world by believing God exists but I don't need to go to a particular building on a particular day on the calendar to maintain a relationship with God. I'm gonna worry about me, you worry about you and we'll let God sort it out in the end. Totally workable. But in that vein, I have to allow others the freedom to practice their faith as they see fit. For a couple of my best friends, that means church, Catholic school, religious ed, the whole 9... But they don't look down on me for having a different take on the world, they made me Godmother to their kids. So it all works out as far as I'm concerned! What blows my mind is the people that on one hand condemn people of faith for being "holier than thou" while snubbing their noses and claiming superiority for their brilliance for abhorring religion. That whole pot calling the kettle black thing.
Put me down as a freelancer too.. 12 yrs of Catholic school, the whole God sitting upstairs judging and smiting and the devil lurking around.. always on your guard. Pretty heady stuff for 6 yr olds.. original sin, and confession at 7... and having to stare at the dead man on the cross, front and center of every classroom, his face contorted in pain.. geez.. what were our parents thinking.. I am a humanist.. I believe in goodness for goodness sake..
@Kallie I agree. Organized religion, especially the big denominations like Catholicism, are quite hypocritical when it comes to their teachings. Jesus probably wouldn't have cared about this kid's hair, he would have seen it as doing God's work by helping those less fortunate. Real Christianity is all "love thy neighbor" and promotes peace, love, charity, and a personal relationship with God through Jesus. Most major "Christian" churches, on the other hand, are a little less accepting at best, and downright arrogant and intolerant at worst.
For example, there was a huge shouting match outside of the student union at my college today between an outside Baptist group and the student secularist club. I consider myself Christian, but after watching these guys go back and forth for about half an hour, I finally joined the protest - on the secularist side. Not because I agreed with what they, the secularists, believed, but because I disagreed with the message that the Baptist group was spreading. They were very intolerant, holier-than-thou, and arrogant when it came to how they preached. I even had to warn one of them when he got up in the face of the secularist leader, told him that if he didn't mind his distance and his agression level that I was going to call the campus police.
This is why I read the Bible myself, and don't count on the church to read it for me. And if anyone thinks that not going to chuch makes me a bad Christian, well it's not your place to judge. It's God who has that right, Him and only Him. If you're a churchgoer I won't judge you for that, but I invite you to really think about what your church really is saying. I think God would actually want you to doubt the church's teachings, because it would mean you would have a better understanding of what the Bible itself teaches, thereby making your faith stronger through that doubt. Faith without doubt is blind, and only makes you oblivious to what faith it is you are actually following.
Sorry, will collapse my soapbox now. Just think about it everyone, ok?
I'm not religious, because there is no God. It was made up back when people were looking for answers, but had no clue. So they made up all kinds of Gods to explain things. The Pope and other religious leaders are all put there by humans, not by a God. If there is anything up in the so called heavens, it's not a God. Evolution is the way we have come and the way we go. Jesus was not a son of a God, but more of a great Peacemaker of his time. You may believe in a God and i don't hold that against you. It's your right as a human to believe what you want. Myself, i believe in the truth and no fairy tales. By the religious leaders putting on their robes don't stop them from being humans and having human thoughts. If their going to stop a child of their God from going to their school, then are they not saying they know better then their own God.
Joe: you mean to tell me that you dont go to church because of what other people do, I will not let anyone keep me from going to church, I dont go to church for the people, I go because I love God, the bible says let the goats and the sheep dwell together, and there are good and bad in every church!!!!
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
It sounds like someone is on a power trip and is ignoring the larger picture in his/her little fiefdom. That's come back to haunt him/her in spades as parents withdraw their kids or put them into the public school system rather than deal with a power-hungry administrator!
I'm not keen on zero-tolerance kind of school policies to begin with; if the child is doing something for the benefit of others, what's the harm in having long hair as long as it's neat and clean? "WWJD" was a great retort to the administrator from the mother. I think the Diocese would be smart to soften its stance and reverse the decision in barring this child from the pre-k since this will partically guarantee that this kid won't be in the school with his parents paying tuition for the next eight years.
Considering the school changed it's rules and mom made a good faith effort to comply with the rule change, this seems beyond absurd. A storm shutting things down the day she had her kid scheduled for a hair cut seems like an act of God, don't you think? So ask her to reschedule the appointment and let the kid come to school. He's learning a lesson in charity that aren't taught in school (quite obviously in this case). I'd think the article would have referred to it if the whole male population of the school suddenly started defying the hair length rule because this kid's growing his hair for Locks of Love so it doesn't strike me as a major disruption to the learning environment. All in all stupid on the school's part.

The school should let this child attend class.  He is being brought up to lend a helping hand to others in time of need.     I applaud his parents for bringing him up to be a kind & generous child something that seems to be lacking in today's society.    So his hair is a bit long BUT for a wonderful cause.        So sad that the length of this childs hair is causing such a needless ruckus.     look at past pictures of Jesus & the saints & they had long hair...Â
why doesn't the mother show a good example, and cut off all her hair ? Puzzling.................................... because she doesn't want to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Judging from the picture, the mother's hair has been lightened. If it has been bleached in any way, she CAN'T donate to Locks of Love. They will accept hair that has been colored, but not hair that has been bleached.
And Kate - please tell us what YOU'VE done recently to help your fellow humans. Have YOU donated to LofL, or any other charity?

Poor little guy - I'm glad his parents have kept most of this situation (the disagreement with the school) away from him. His first experience with the "power of the church" should not be learning that he has been treated badly / differently because he looks different. The diocese should be ASHAMED.
His first experience with the "power of the church" should not be learning that he has been treated badly / differently because he looks different.
Why not? This is the Catholic church we're talking about. His "first experience" with its power could be a LOT worse. This way, he sees what they're made of, and may NOT be traumatized for life. I think it's a perfect outcome.

JS, you are absolutely right! My mother worked for the Catholic Chancery for almost 20 years, but was not Catholic. Her grandson has hair to the backs of his knees (yes, always brushed & kept in order), & she LOVES it. She's 84 now, and still gets upset when I make mention of cutting his hair. She always had to worry about what the Archbishop might think, or the others in power at work. That was wrong.
I think the idea is great, I've donated my own hair before. But it seems to me like the mother is out for publicity. She couldn't cut his hair on September 30th, when she had all of the surrounding media for it planned out. It's now November 1st and you mean to tell me she still hasn't cut it? You can go to almost any salon on any given day and donate your hair. This mother is creating a big situation out of something that doesn't need to be.
I TOTALLY agree with you. Mother is looking for publicity, 100's a people a week donate their hair, and they don't have a media crew there to film it. I'll say it again, if her father's cancer death is so dear to her, why doesn't she cut her own hair off ? She canceled his hair cut because the film crew couldn't be there, WAY TO GO SCHOOL ! You know a snake when you see one ! Film crew, are you kidding me ???????????? Publicity hound, that's what she is.
It deserves publicity... its a humans right to grow their hair and if a so called Christian school is shutting its door in a human beings face because of long hair... it merits publication. It's the way human beings fight for their rights, which our founding fathers made sure we are able to do, when they created the United States Constitution. Are you an American???? I mean,. a REAL American?
I'm sensing my pet cat or the sparrow on the balcony will be suing me shortly for something. What other scewed, non-sensical thing will occur in the next few decades about what is a privelege, right, or something to get over and focus on legit things in life.

I agree that the Catholic school is being ridiculous; however, it is a private school and it is their standard and their rule. If people don't like it or it offends you, go to another school. I agree what this family is doing is selfless and kind. The fact the Catholic school is only seeing it in black and white is troubling, but it is still a private school. It is their right to have that rule.Â
My additional two cents: it's a school (public or private) and every school needs rules in order to establish order. Each of us with school aged kids wants fair rules that are uniformly enforced.
Admittedly, there will always be rules that seem unfair -- and in this case, perhaps the school is not doing a very good job of thinking this through -- but parents that go to the media over these types of issues only tend to create further issues.
As an additional point of consideration, supposedly, schools that enforce uniform appearance standards tend to have less behavioral disruption issues. Thus, perhaps there is some reasonable justification for the rule.
That certainly doesn't mean the enforcement of the rule in this instance makes sense, but I'm surprised at the number of people that seem to think this rule is so "out in left field."

The length of a boy's hair shouldn't matter, it's his education that matters. I'd have pulled him out of that school myself and enrolled him in public school. And where did this mindset that only girls are supposed to have long hair come from anyways? The only reason people are bothered by a boy with long hair, is because it's not the socially acceptible norm, which is stupid.
Only his education matters... lol. It's not like they're barring a kid from middle-school or high-school. This is PRE-kindergarten... it is glorified daycare. What a crisis... he's missing out on fingerpainting, kool-aid and nap-time.
And if his "education" were such a high priority for the mom, why couldn't she get his haircut (which she claims she's going to do anyway).
Erockaustin, that is a very shallow view of early education....example, my niece is in a montessori preschool and at age 4 knows how to read kiddie books and how to add and subtract small numbers. Also, she is bilingual....early childhood education sets one on a path that follows them in the future.

Catholic Schools are renowned for the stupid rules, nuns making girls kneel on the floor and if the skirts don't touch the floor then the skirt is too short, socks have to be pulled up, no nail polish and yet it is perfectly OK for the faculty to use corporal punishment and for the priests to abuse the choirboys !!!!!
You couldn't pay me enough $$ to send my kids to Catholic School & I attended one !!!!!!
Agreed! I never attended Catholic school, but any "organization" that thinks it's okay to turn their heads when children are getting abused by GROWN MEN, and their "answer" is to move the lions to a new flock of lambs is insane! What happened to the old Catholic church who excommunicated you and anyone you ever thought about knowing for pissing off the church, hello throw a few priests out!
Catholic priests (post Vatican II, mind you) aren't the only religious predators out there, and not all Catholic priests are deviants.
Why is there no outcry and damning when various independent Protestant "Christian" ministers are nailed for pedophilia, too? Oh, that's right, as a Protestant there is no legitimacy in authority or tradition and thus you just break away start a new church, do what you want, re-name the denomination and it's all a business again.
And right, the fact kids today go to school with their ball sacks, clits and t*ts hanging out to emulate the skanks and douchebags on MTV, et al. creates such a better environment. Isn't y'all's mantra "kids will do it anyway, so why bother?"
He's not emulating skanks and douchebags on MTV, he's donating his hair to cancer patients. If anything, the school should have encouraged him, and any other child that wanted to follow his good example.
If it's a private school there is nothing wrong with making the girls have skirts to their knees, the girls should look like girls, and boys should look like boys. I remember back in the 60's in my public high school girls were not allowed to wear pants, and the boys had to cut their hair, my last year in high school, 1970 they started allowing the girls to wear pants and the boys were allowed to cut their hair, things started going down hill after that, morally that is!! It's disgusting how the children are allowed to talk to the teachers nowdays. When I was young we were not even allowed to call an adult by their first name, it was Mr. or Mrs. OOPS sorry womens libbers M.S. we had respect back then, not today noooooo we dont want to offend these little dieties of ours! The prisons are over crowded now because of the way parents have allowed their children to act, its a disgrace!!!!!

It's a private school. This is no different from having a dress code. I'm sure he's required to wear a uniform and can't wear a Metallica shirt to school. If this were a public school it would be a different situation. But seriously. c'mon... you couldn't get his haircut because it was raining?
She made the choice for him to attend this PRIVATE school. While I don't necessarily agree with the dress code, it is their decision to make.
Does the school have to go as far, then, to say "boys must exhibit masculine behaviors and mannerisms" when compared to girls?
Dang, I still get frustrated when I have to introduce myself to colleagues or strangers, even someone's kid and based on their look or mannerisms and how they talk, I still can't tell if it's sexually confused or already choosing to act against social sex role norms. Tell me, which exact gene (and its locus) in the human genome that is "on/off" for homosexual expression? A LOT of environmental factors can affect how someone with tendencies or curiousities (or lack of the second parent) can cause identity confusion.

I agree, my question still is, why doesn't she cut off all her long hair & donate it, in her "Father's memory"? why doesn't she ? because she's just doing this for publicity, the boy didn't even know his grandfather, give me a break ! She's just using her kid, maybe she thinks he's cute enough to be a model, so she'll get him on the news the only way she can.........by stirring up trouble !
Kate, your comments are lame and immature, and you hold no credibility when your postings paint you with such ignorance. Reposting them again and again doesn't make them better, it just makes you look sillier and crazier.
Why do you need to hate on everyone? Does it make you feel better about yourself?
btw, I'm listening to Yo-Yo Ma while flashing tricks with my antique yo-yo RIGHT NOW :)
A true, humble Catholic would know that prayer to God on behalf of a deceased family member or for the infirm (corporal and spiritual works of mercy, remember?) is perhaps more beneficial than outward materialistic things like hair or glory in the name of a goal.
It's hair. It grows back. Donate time at a cancer ward with children or adults and talk with them, give a hug or help the support staff change linens or clean toilets. Pride is one of the seven deadly sins...
gimmeabreakoradrink, you are disgustingly insensitive.
Do you know what it's like to be 6 years old, dying, in pain, pale and bald?
You make helping these poor kids sound like a chore. Folding linens for support staff and asking sick children to talk to/hug strangers doesn't make them feel young and beautiful again.
It's not about pride; it's about raising awareness and inspiring people like you to get up from behind your computer and do something real to help others. I'm truly sorry you missed the message.

Just another example of why the Catholic church loses parishoners by the score every day and the churches are being closed down one by one. Nothing but intolerance and absolute control. So glad I got out of there alive!
Nah, the Catholic Church is losing numbers in masses since the Second Vatican Council bastardized the Mass. A modernist Catholic Church is disturbing with it being granola-y, and so wishy washy it's like a protestant service organized and sung by an 8th grade youth group.

The kids hair looks long enough to donate now, he looks like a girl. I agree with the school and the rules should not be broken. Schools are bad enough these days and I think we need to get back to rules.
A dress code, for example, is fine and even necessary for some people, meaning, no shirts with foul messages on them, no jeans full of holes, no short skirts or belly tops etc... I'm even pro school uniforms.
But the length of a persons hair should be a personal choice. Just keep it clean and neat, presentable for school.
The way a person wears their hair should be choice because its something they wear all the time, not just during school hours. This is America, not Afghanistan.
While the school updated their rule book to include pre-K, the mother already had an agreement in place with the school. They knew what she was doing and should have honored their agreement that he didnt have to cut his hair till kindergarten. It is not a matter of breaking the rules, it is is a matter of the school honoring their word.
Ho'ws harmed (truthfully) by a little kid getting his hair cut? Big deal, a cancer survivor has to opt for a wig supplied by another donor. Seems to me there are greater issues than having hair first and foremost in conquering a malicious disease.
If there's no harm in the "choice" of his hair length, there's nothing harmful with a school or other private entity (they chose to enroll there) saying little boys shouldn't look like little girls? Will this boy choose to wear a training bra under his clothes in 6th grade? I mean, it's his "choice".
Why do people keep saying that he "looks like a little girl"? It's societies "idea" of what boys and girls should look like! Should the school make a rule that girls can't have short hair?
People, stop perpetuating gender inequalities.
When the mother first signed the boy up for school, they told her it was OK for his hair to be long (until he entered Kindergarden). The school changed the rules after that. They should make an exception, because they already told the parent it was OK.
I can understand cutting hair for safety reasons, some jobs require short hair for safety or health reasons - this is understandable. BUT, both males and females should be required to follow those rules. We are talking about a child in Pre-K! Even if it's mom's idea for him to grow his hair to later cut for a wig, he is learning a valuable lesson. Just as valuable as he can learn in any Pre-K. We try to teach our children to be truthful and do what they tell us they will do. This school did not keep thier word. They changed the "rules" after telling this family the hair was OK.
As someone who "lost " her hair to chemo, I can honestly say that losing hair was one of the WORST parts of treatment! And I am an adult. For children it must be far worse... Since you obviously know nothing about this, hush. Once you have been diagnosed with cancer, had chemo, lost your hair...THEN you have a right to comment on the "greater issues".
often....thank you. As mentioned before my mom died of cancer. She cried over that beautiful thick hair being gone. Every day, looking into the mirror, she cried. Shame on those who are putting down the sick and how they feel. Shame on you stating that boys should have short hair. Some of you people want to take back the country. Since long hair on men was part of that deal, OK. Hey, all you men with the long sexy hair, hid, do not let these nuts around you.

Oh my god; the Priest's want to molest the pre-K now !!
Sorry, the mom is a media-whore. According to the story, she was going to get his hair cut on Sept 30th and even arranged for the news stations to cover it. Because of a storm, the event got cancelled. On October 1 (school starts that late up there? It starts in August here) the school says that they will not except him with the long hair. So instead of walking to the barber and getting it cut and getting her kid in school, she has spent the past 4 weeks going to every news agency she can find. The church is right, the mother is the blame because she is putting her 15 minutes of fame ahead of her child's best interests.
A responsible parent would say, "Well, we were going to cut your hair yesterday and seeing that school is more important than being on the news, lets get your hair cut now and send you to school tomorrow."
How do you know it wasn't the media that wanted to do the story? One of those feel good bits that they run at the end of a broadcast after countless stories of murder, robbery, arson, rape and politics? You don't. You are making assumptions and calling the mother a horrible name when she is trying to teach her son compassion and empathy. Besides it was local news not a national issue. Do you go around judging the local news broadcasts of cities across the nation? We had some nice news stories about the state fair just recently if you would like to add some horrendous remarks about that.
Who cares if a local media goon wanted to do the story. Mom's an independent parent. Do what YOU need to do for your family, not per the schedule or hyperbole of a media reporter. Tit for tat, Daysie.
Trouble is, we get caught up in trivial things like this in the news rather than society seeing the bad things going on and getting angered enought to effect change and take their local communities back for the good of all.
Did you ever think that it's the principle of the thing. Maybe the mother truly felt that the school did the child wrong. (and I don't think Pre-K education is more important than a lesson in doing something good for someone else).
There have been times in my life that I felt "screwed" by someone else. There have been times when I wanted to call the local news station and say "Hey you need to let people know that this is happening!" I've never had the "courage" to do it. This mother may be looking for her 15 minutes, but she is also making people aware of a need while she is letting people know that she feels the school is wrong. I say - good for her!
I agree... schools have to have certains policies and rules that we, as parents, have to follow. It is not about sexism, but the poor child looks like a beautiful girl... shame on his mother...
IvanAp...maybe she did want to get some media attention to show that in honor of the child's grandfather that her son would be donating his hair...fund-raising events and charities are televised all of the time and the press is called to show the world that there are still people doing good, people who care and to motivate the rest of us to do some good as well...charitable acts do not always involve money, it shows that so many simple and invaluable (in terms of money) things and acts can be done to help others.
So since it became such an issue with the school, mom decided to shout it from the rooftops that the "almighty Catholic Church" has a problem with boys and long hair...it is her right to do so and it is our right to hear about it ...just one more blemish on the "great Church's" (sarcasm) profile.
You know sometimes people do things for the principle, just to make it known, make people aware, and hold those that are guilty accountable for their actions. Don't worry the Catholic Church has had a lot of bad press, I doubt it will change the minds of all of those good Catholics...you know the ones who have children out of wedlock, and sex before marriage, abortions, beat their wives and children and then go to confession and say so many Hail Mary's and...*POOF*...they are forgiven and their souls are clean again...until the next time, that is....
GIVE ME A BREAK
and to Marian...
Shame on you for shaming his mother....since the beginning of man, man had long hair, it is natural and can be a great look for many...it is the short crops that have been invented and are un natural. I agree that schools should have certain policies and dress codes that the parents must follow, but this has gone too far, aside from stating that hair should be clean and neatly groomed it is not their business how long or short it is for a boy or girl...telling a boy he cannot have long hair would be like telling a girl she MUST have long hair (just not right)...then they will assume it is alright to tell boys they may not get their ears pierced...again just like telling a girl she must have hers pierced.
This is more that just a personal choice issue, their are people who grow their hair for religious beliefs and where jewlery for the same reasons...to let any school, run by a church or not, to specify these types of things takes away our rights to be who we are and express ourselves....
So again Marian SHAME ON YOU for being so narrow minded....
"How do you know it wasn't the media that wanted to do the story?"
Daisy, pray tell how do you think the Today Show finds out about this? A little bird told them? Don't be naive. Mom called them. Probably several times. And you can bet she's been calling all over. She had plenty of time to take care of this BEFORE the deadline and a full month AFTER, and STILL HASN'T. Instead, she's been yapping to the media. That tells you everything you need to know.

Why don't the parents just send him to a regular public school? Their allowed to have long hair...i'm just saying.
Not all public school districts will allow hair past the collar on boys... what a crock!
Not in alot of public schools. Certainly not in Mesquite Texas.
http://mesquiteblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/12/long-hair-gets-mesquite-prekin.html
That's parochial school. They have rules.
Didn't Jesus have long hair?
"Didn't Jesus have long hair?"
"Their allowed to have long hair"???? Strike one for public school....
Why do people think that the rules simply don't apply to them??
It is a private school they can make up their own rules. The Mom should send her son else where! That being said!
The catholic church should join the 21st century!
Conformity is complacency!
Do what your told!
whoa, I just caught the fact that the rule was just changed.
Hey, I Love America 24-7
Their allowed to have long hair...i'm just saying.
mary-2579803: Really? Their and i'm?
Conformity is complacency!
Do what your told!
MDB123: Seriously? Do you see anything wrong with your post?
Did you two attend public school, because if you did, you're really hurting the argument that this mom should put her son in public school.
Has anyone ever noticed that there is a spell check that can be used to correct any spelling errors before you post? Please use it.
Sounds like the school did this woman a favor. Maybe long hair is a turnoff for the priests.
Didn't Jesus have an afro?
btw, there were no photographs back then. if you want to use that example "Jesus had long hair" then we also need to think that the pharophs of egypt were beautiful and catlike. just saying...
also, the problem behind this article has nothing to do with hair length
A good lesson for all of us that think that the "TALIBAN" is only in Afghanistan!
Will: Yes, thanks, basically I was trying to find out where that scripture was, thank you!
These are the same Christians who think war is for God and is good.
You expect rationality from these people?
mw-excuse me, WHAT????
ok here is the thing...the catholic school isn't saying that they wont allow him to cut his hair for cancer patients, so chill about how great locks of love is.
I think that the church better take a look at the length of Jesus's hair! Last I knew it was long and wavy...or at least that is how he is portrayed!
Then why are ALL catholic icons of Jesus long haired if so horrible? Oh wait, I know, it's because He was different and glory be for that.
Here's the proof that Jesus had an Afro.
"i've seen jesus and spoke with him. he's black and has an afro. he's pretty disgusted with the 'his' religion has gone and says, basically, if someone goes to church, they're not a true christian and are worshipping a false idol."
http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message940182/pg1
Well, if you believe that the Bible is a legitimate story of Jesus' life, you would have to assume his hair was long because of the story of him washing his apostles' feet and drying them with his hair. I doubt a bald man could do that.
Whoever made this decision, one, five, or the pope, need to go bye-bye, the child is way more important to humanity.
The End.
um... you DO realize that there WERE no pictures in that time frame, right?
Catholisim ROCKS !!! Sex with little boys ? OK . Long Hair ? No No No !
ALL THE IMAGINATION OF THE ARTISTS-with the insistance possibly OF THE VATICAN.
....Jesus was an adult...we are talking about rules for children in school...
Samoore-2404981
Hanging out with prostitutes was also dishonorable and could earn you death by stoning at that time. Yet Jesus did not mind such dishonor of having repented prostitute following him! What do you know about honor?
Two comments:
Sure addresses the topic nicely, especially from a child's view, doesn't it? Beautiful song.
@Yourinsanity
So I don't get your point.?.? Jesus was also the Messiah, he came to help sinners to become reconciled to God. (Luke 5:27-32)
So, you are comparing this kid with Jesus?
samoore;
so your book says...
Hmmmm......
jwfun
I was a Lutheran until the 1st grade teacher molested my daughter and the Luthern Church-Missouri Synod stood up for the teacher and the Pastor
Tom, Thanks for reminding me. I was a Lutheran until I became 17 (60 years ago) and realized the whole church hypocracy. I still go to weddings and funerals, but although Jesus was a great man, churches SUCK!
I think those siding with the mom are wrong,
Whether Jesus had long hair has nothing to do with today.
Martin Luther was an anti-semite.
I'm Lutheran too, and never heard of hair as an issue. Catholics are about as anti christ as mormons are.
and you sir are an anti-Semite. Because most Jews don't hold a grudge against Marin Luther. Or Jesus for that matter. Quit living in the past.
Do they not use proofreading any longer? I didn't know rain belonged to anyone and what exactly does "long cancer" affect?
Whoops! Thanks for catching - fixing now. - TODAYshow.com
While you're at it, maybe also fix the typo in the photo caption of Jack and his sister.
What a stupid comment.
I went to a Catholic school too but my experience doesn't resemble yours at all.
Christianity is always about the control and the money, school or church.
wow really you are blaming the parents how stupid of you
Yes Marika, "schools have rules" but it would be nice if schools had rules that were based on some sort of reason rather than just arbitrariness.
Jherek - Well said!! I wonder if marika will actually answer your questions. Something tells me she will not be able to come up with anything logical.
Bravo!
No surprise that you would want me to stop listening to a voice of rational critical thinking and reason.
And I would like to note that I was right and you did not answer his questions as I predicted you would not.
Because boys should look like boys and girls should look like girls its not sexist.
Ding, ding, points for both Heather and Brad.
This is not about what the boy is doing for cancer patients. It is not about the appearance of Jesus in pictures.
It is about bending the rules. How far past preschool should rules be bent.
Shall we bend them for illegal aliens? Shall we bend them for the CEO's who are taking huge bonuses? Should we have bent them for Nixon?
No, this is not about the good deed of a little boy being squashed by the bad old Catholic religion.
retiredcoastguard
Who determines what boys and girls should look like? Different societies have different "ideas" of what a boy or girl should look like. Do you also think that girls shouldn't have short hair? Should the school make a rule that girls should all have shoulder lenght or longer hair?
Why? What happens if a boy has long hair and "looks like a girl"?
So you think by one instance of doing something generous that originally was NOT against the rules until the rules were changed arbitrarily will make this kid an anarchist that will never learn to be a reasonable citizen? um take it down a notch dude! I'm sure this child will have plenty of opportunities to learn to follow rules in his life - just like the rest of us.
If you read the article you would notice that he wasn't bending the rules and in fact the parent checked with the school. But then the school decided to change the rules on the parent.
I think I love you.
Coming from Kansas where it seems like everyone is Catholic, I feel that something the Catholic church preaches is that being different is wrong and that conformity is good. They also are very against gay people and transvestites and several other things, but the long hair is an issue for them because it is a "feminine" quality according to the church.
I like the thing about Jesus having long and wavy hair i try to use that against my principle (i go to catholic school) and he has a response that Jesus didn't have a dress code(he also says that about shaving)....i always feel like i can say something else to counter that but i never can get anything...I think that if i have a good argument and stand my ground i can maybe get him thinking about it.
how do you know she isn't going to cut her hair with her child. Too much assumption implicated.

Dennis -
Do you really have to copy and paste this that many times? People get it!
well, let's see - Mother is just trying to cause trouble.
This is america, duh..
kate your attatude shows that you lack any compassion or understanding of any thing
Kate Spade, huh, what an old bag...
Well, it is a private school. Their rules or move on.
Sad they couldn't reach a compromise. Maybe the little guy could have worn his hair tied back or braided.
And Mom is way over the top with her need for publicity and attention. I guess "do good and disappear" isnt flashy enough for the Jersey crowd.
Its HAIR! Cry me a river!
if the mother is such a good do-er, why don't she get her hair cut off ????? Why does she want a movie crew to film the boy's haircut ? give me a break !
cut your hair & donate it, Mommy Dearest !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you know she hasn't? How do you know she could if she wanted to?
Your rush to judgment is decidedly un-Christlike.
Isn't that the point? To create publicity for hair donations to cancer victims? I fail to see why this is wrong.
FYI.... the boy was 16 months (if you could read), at that age he knew very well who his Grandfather was. Such a hater,... such a shame.
Right on, Azzix.
Then simply sign an agreement with the child and their parents who wish to grow their hair long; in the agreement state the goal length, who it will be donated to, etc. Once it reaches the stated goal length, they get it cut and give documentation to the school.
The point is, it is an entirely manageable process, and that is the job of school administrators. To manage; not to be automatons.
Wow kate is an idiot and I mean that in a Christ like way
I totally agree.
Yeah, whiners...it's HAIR...."cry me a river" one bonehead already wrote.
It's hair, little girly boy can grow more now or later and donate or not. It's hair, cry me a river.
There are rules. Follow them or leave.

This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
Stupid, just plain stupid. This is why I am not religious....Holier than thou...
This is why you're not religious? Because some kid you don't know can't go to preschool with long hair? Really? "Just plain stupid" is right.
I think Joe means that when you speak with many Christian congregations there is an underlying judgmental, condescending attitude that can turn most people off.
Which Joe seems to demonstrate nicely in labeling himself as better than religious types. Or maybe I just read too much into that.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
She's just using her kid
Kate-
why dont you cut your hair if it's such a big deal?
Did it ever occur to you that she might not have the kind of hair they want? Or that she's on medicine that affects her hair's quality?
Or that's she is just a selfish b#tch.
Kate, did his mother run over your foot with her minivan or something? Where is all this hate coming from? Your comments don't even make any sense.
PuddleDuck, you're just as bad as Kate. You two deserve each other.
Kate, are you jelous of her hair? She said her son was growing his hair for locks of love, not her.
Kate are you really this stupid?
Judging from the picture, the mother's hair has been lightened. If it has been bleached in any way, she CAN'T donate to Locks of Love. They will accept hair that has been colored, but not hair that has been bleached.
And Kate - please tell us what YOU'VE done recently to help your fellow humans. Have YOU donated to LofL, or any other charity?
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
Poor little guy - I'm glad his parents have kept most of this situation (the disagreement with the school) away from him. His first experience with the "power of the church" should not be learning that he has been treated badly / differently because he looks different. The diocese should be ASHAMED.
Why not? This is the Catholic church we're talking about. His "first experience" with its power could be a LOT worse. This way, he sees what they're made of, and may NOT be traumatized for life. I think it's a perfect outcome.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
Dear Lord, "growing your hair" is a human right?
I'm sensing my pet cat or the sparrow on the balcony will be suing me shortly for something. What other scewed, non-sensical thing will occur in the next few decades about what is a privelege, right, or something to get over and focus on legit things in life.
the MOM decided to GROW the hair---I have a four year old and explaining cancer and lock of love is tooo much. Come on people....

Cindy.....my sentiments EXACTLY!!!!! It's a private school.....you don't like the rules, then don't take him to that school PERIOD!!!
I too feel that what Jack is doing is awesome, thoughtful and selfless, but, rules are rules lady!
This is the mentality of today...rules are meant to be broken not followed. Sad.

We in this country started the short hair when the government drafted men for WW2 and they wanted to prevent lice from getting a start in the barraks.
Before that all men wore long hair and this biship is just an ass that likes his power too much
Erockaustin, that is a very shallow view of early education....example, my niece is in a montessori preschool and at age 4 knows how to read kiddie books and how to add and subtract small numbers.

Â
Isn't y'all's mantra "kids will do it anyway, so why bother?"
gimmeabreakoradrink, you missed the point again.
Im pretty sure that the reason that things went downhill is not because women were allowed to wear pants...
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
And this was NOT an issue last year! Why must boys have short hair? MUST girls have LONG hair? OH, it's arbitrary!
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
So this is where intolerance begins, in Catholic school!!!!
Really? If she was ready to cut the kids hair on 9/30 then why not cut it on 10/01 and start her kid in school the next day.
What is more important, your kids education or being on the news? If you choose the later, then you might want to rethink parenthood.
Kate...how many times are you going to repeat that? Get a life.
Kate, how many times are you going to post this? It seems like you're the one looking for attention and publicity...
just 10 more times. yo yo yo yo yo yo Steve Yo ! where you from Yo, Staten Island ? that's what's wrong with these people, from poor households !
The more Kate speaks the more stupid she appears to be
A true, humble Catholic would know that prayer to God on behalf of a deceased family member or for the infirm (corporal and spiritual works of mercy, remember?) is perhaps more beneficial than outward materialistic things like hair or glory in the name of a goal.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
The kids hair looks long enough to donate now, he looks like a girl. I agree with the school and the rules should not be broken. Schools are bad enough these days and I think we need to get back to rules.
Rules are intended to keep people from harm, yes? Who is harmed by the length of this kid's hair?
I'm all for rules that make sense.
Yes, but his hair is not harming anyone. Even if all the boys start growing their hair long as well, it's still not harming anyone.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
What if the school changed the rules in order to get rid of the mother?
They didn't change the rule, they changed the age. The hair-length rule was ALREADY in place for Kindergarten and up, now it applies to Pre-K as well.
They CHANGED the rules for THAT age! Sheesh!!
erockaustin, you are either literal or anal, probably a bit of both,
that i think cuz the mother told the school at the very start what they were doing
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
Why not teach the child humility and haste?
Who cares if a local media goon wanted to do the story. Mom's an independent parent. Do what YOU need to do for your family, not per the schedule or hyperbole of a media reporter. Tit for tat, Daysie.
Trouble is, we get caught up in trivial things like this in the news rather than society seeing the bad things going on and getting angered enought to effect change and take their local communities back for the good of all.
gimmeabreakoradrink, again with the insensitivity...
Tell 6-year-old cancer patient, Molly, that raising awareness to help her is trivial.
Tell her that there are more important things to worry about than making her happy.
"Getting angered" won't help her. You need to check your values.
This Catholic Church probably condones all the Catholic Preist's molestation of little boy's that's why all the little boy's probably have to have their hair short; that way the Catholic Priest can tell the difference between the little boy's and girl's !
