Shame is a dying concept. Short of killing someone, anything goes.... except, no matter how you rationalize shameful behavior, things that should cause you shame tend to come back to bite you in the a$$. There is always a price to pay.... now, or later.

When you marry and then subsequently you meet someone who makes you feel "twitterpated," what a real adult does is say, "I can no longer spend time with you because it will harm my family." You see, love isn't what you feel, it is what you do. You tell your spouse, I can't see this person anymore, because I'm uncomfortable with how I feel. Adults put the feelings of their children before their own personal happiness. These two do not even deserve the title of grown-up and for the Times to publish there article without even some acknowledgement of the trauma and disaster that their choices left behind is entirely irresponsible and incomprehensible.

I agree totally with you. It makes me sick when people do this to their families for no other reason than that they are selfish. When you choose to marry a person, you need to realize that it is work. When you find yourself looking at greener pastures, that's the time you need to look at your spouse and do what you can to make your personal pasture greener. Re-connect with the person you fell in love with all those years ago. And for heaven's sake, think about your kids who don't deserve the complications and heartbreak you're going to cause them by breaking up their secure home.

How do you know that the children are any less happy now than they were before? Kids aren't always the best judges of what's best for them, anyway. Why do you think so many kids stay in alcoholic households, or with abusive parents? They don't know any better and will do anything for love, that's why!

If the adults were unhappy in their marriages, they deserve the right to make whatever changes they need to get happy. Unhappy adults are unhappy parents, too. And unhappy parents usually have unhappy children.

You don't know all the facts so how can you judge? Maybe one or both of the other spouses was alchoholic, or had some other dysfunction? Maybe they were beating the kids. Maybe kids deserve to see their parents happy, even if it's with someone other than their other parent. That might help the children make better choices when it's time for them to marry?

Most of the comments here against this couple are probably from people that are stuck in a lousy marriage but don't have the guts to admit it or get out. This couple did something to make their lives better. And they had the courage to talk about it so that it would help other people struggling with the same issues.

It's people like you that insist that others need to hide their unhappiness and do what "polite society" requires that make for unhappy marrriages in the first place. "Grin and bear it" isn't a strategy for a happy marriage or a happy life....or happy children.

As I noted above, I REFUSE to read the article but my IMPRESSION of it reminds me of the wedding announcements they put in the paper.

Stop assuming everyone marries for love. Some marry because it's the right thing to do or lonliness, etc. Whats bad is when you knonw someone doesn't love you and you try to make them stay.

You know, Ceemee, I think it's quite hypocritical of people, especially the religious right, to make a vow to their future spouses, to witnesses, and most importantly, to God, that you will love, honor and cherish that person they plan to marry "'til death do us part", when they have no intentions on following through on that vow. I agree with you that most people get "married" as part of a business arrangement, or they don't want to be lonely, or they want to have children, just so they can leave, take the children and the HUGE child support payments (which is what my first wife did to me). If that is so, why don't they just say that in the vows? Love, honor....none of those will be part of the sham that will be their "marriage". Yet, it's the right-wing religious zealots that scream about gays wanting to be legally married....for LOVE, for HONOR!! Even though, I have stayed for my two beautiful children and I am working on making her more self sufficient so I can move on and be happy. I'm sorry that it makes me sick to my stomach. I was caught off guard by my husband having an affair with someone from our church. They took off together which caused pain and embarrassment to two families. Selfishness abides doesn't it? Forgiveness is so hard.

True, I don't agree with people staying in an unhappy relationship "for the kids" as the kids will most likely be better off with parents who are happy instead of miserable. HOWEVER, that being said, it is still wrong to cheat on one's spouse. The proper course of action is to realize one is unhappy and leave BEFORE cheating. That is the honorable course of action. It is hurtful and dishonest to stay with a spouse until one meets someone better. "The grass is always greener on the other side" "Once a cheat always a cheat" The proper course of action would have been for them to realize they were unhappy with current spouse before starting an affair. Now that they have cheated once; it will be easier to cheat again on the new spouse once that relationship gets old and boring.

They are both weak. Even though there was not physical infidelity there was emotional infidelity which is just as bad. This woman needs to realize that her new husband will pull the same thing to another woman down the road or vice versa.

My issue is the same as Johnathan's. Adults do what adults do, but there are five children involved here. Knowing that other children can be so very cruel, did either of these people give that any thought at all when they decided to tell their story?

There are people that fall in and out of love on a whim, that is not the selfish part. The breaking up of two marriages is not even the selfish part to me, as both spouses are now free to find someone who will give them the love they need WITHOUT falling for a friend (just look at Shania Twain!).

Selfishness enters the picture when this couple chooses to publicly tell their story without regard for what their children are absolutely likely to have to deal with in their day to day lives. I have read all of these comments only to find that people should never judge others. I have been with the same man for 24 years. The man that I married betrayed me by keeping a deep dark secret. This secret has caused problems in our marriage for the last 20 years. I have hung in there doing what most here are suggesting & sacrificing my own chance for true love & happiness. Living in a marriage as mine is mentally abusive since I have dealt with years of neglect. As for my children, I never wanted my home to be torn apart. I, like most, would love the house with the white picket fence but life doesn't always work that way. I have stayed in my marriage for the sake of my children. However, my teenage son told me this week that he doesn't know why I do it. He told me that he knew I was unhappy for years & all that he wants for me is to be happy. He continued to say that he knew he was loved & that his father & I would always love him. So people....before you speak for the children, realize that children are well aware of their environment. BTW, I came from a broken home also & that is why I have hung in there for so long. I doubt I would have told the story in print as this couple did; however, I don't believe anyone should live a life of misery providing they have tried to make their marriage work. I understand the vows that I took & believe me, I think of them daily. However, let God (not society) be my judge for only he can see my heart. At the present time, I am still legally married & trying to get thru what may be our last Christmas as a family. My parents always told us they were 'doing this for you', 'staying together for the kids'...OMG, they were unhappy, holidays were full of turmoil, you just never knew if they were going to be in a fight. They were not meant to be together, but they only had the view that the financial side of things mattered. I don't begrudge them, they are of another generation and the choice was theirs to make.

I did however use them as examples, for a long while, until I chose to be different as an adult to break the cycle of staying in relationships when they were over.

I can only hope that for both themselves and their children, they do what is positive and healthy. Life is too short to be miserable and childhood is far too short for poor examples from parents.

Actually if you care about your children it is a great idea in most cases. There are exceptions of course. Instead of forming self-serving opinions based on what's convenient, you might want to read "The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce". Right on, Chris, I was about to say pretty much the same thing. "Falling in love" does not happen until you've spent some valuable time with the other person, and gotten to know them - time you had "vowed" to spend with your spouse, to begin with. Perhaps it would be more accurate to state that you "can't help when you have a physical attraction to someone;" however, that just does not sound as noble, so people try to avoid that comment. Also, people keep commenting about the two being in "unhappy marriages." Where in the article did it state the couple complained of being in unhappy marriages? Where was there a comment on turmoil and tension in the homes? (Oh, I see a commentator was mentioned alluding to that, but not the couple themselves). I would suspect that the marriages became "unhappy" due to discontent after each decided they wanted to pursue a romantic relationship with someone other than whom they'd originally vowed their love to. Marriages are not a problem to the married, until they decide they want something they cannot (or at least, should not) have. What if the homes were perfectly stable until each other came along? If that is the case, how do you then argue that it is best for the children for an unhappy marriage to end? In the end, it all sounds more like a case of two homewreckers - previously HAPPY homes, at that...

To me it's not "love" when it's at the expense of somebody else. Especially when there are two families involved. Affairs are a weak form of "crisis management". if these two don't learn another way to handle whatever was going on, it'll happen again.

Did the article really say they were unhappily married? They were all friends, went on family vacations together, attended parties together. Really, how unhappy were they.

I'm sure at some point we've all been attracted to someone other than our spouse, but most of us choose not to act on that attraction. Marriage is not 100% bliss, there are alway ups and downs and rough spots. It doesn't mean that you should throw in the towel and give up.

Maybe 10 years down the road this couple will fall out of love and re-attach themselves to yet another mate.

It's not always better to stay together because you have kids...in fact, it's often worse. My parents made our lives awful. I actually used to pray for them to get a divorce...a good Catholic kid praying for her parents to divorce. But they stayed together "for the children". Give me a break...they were being selfish by staying together.

Emily, they were selfish by not seeking out counseling and mediation. If they had brought the family into counseling things might have changed or they may even have found that they were better off divorced. Take it from a child of divorce, it was no picnic on the other side of the fence eihter - becuase the fighting doesn't stop just because they are divorced.

Actually, differnet, they did seek counseling and it didn't work. Some people should not stay married, some people should probably have never married.

Chris - Wrong. If the other person sucks, then it is temporary. I would never ruin my entire life because I put a metal loop on someone's finger. Sorry buddy, but people make mistakes . . . and sometimes that mistake is marriage.

And don't even start on the "you need to work at it" mentality. If your relationship "takes work", then you are with the wrong person. If the other person "sucks," or "takes work" - then why did you "put a metal loop" on his/her finger to begin with? Marriage is, and always was, supposed to be permanent. In this country, that's a decision you make, not something you are forced into. I have to disagree with your comment that "if your relationship takes work, then you are with the wrong person." I think even very compatible, "in-love" couples go through periods when things aren't perfect; it's pretty natural.

I had been with my husband for 20 years when I learned he'd been having an affair for over a year. He had been denying it for most of that time, and kept begging me to be patient - he was in a new job, and both teaching classes as well as taking classes at night, so he was gone most of the time (our then 9 year old daughter would cry and say she felt like she didn't have a dad because he was never home). When I finally caught him in a lie he couldn't work his way out of, he confessed everything - he was in love, he was planning a future with her (behind my back, while telling me to be patient), he'd even told me he was going on a trip solo months before to "get his head together", when in reality they had a romantic European vacation together.

I still loved him, and begged him to give her up and for us to go into counseling. I wanted our child to come from a two-parent home, and thought maybe this was an extreme wake-up call, and we could learn from it and move on. I was wrong. After several months of him going back and forth, and continuing to lie to me, I finally filed for divorce. When it came time to talk with our daughter, he wouldn't even participate in the conversation. Since our daughter also knew the woman, I told him to let her know that she was his girlfriend, not just a friend, because she would figure it out and also feel betrayed and lied to. He didn't, and she did - she's 15 now, and still can't respect her dad, or the woman (they're not married, but still a couple). I've never had to say a word against either of them, because it speaks for itself. She was married as well, and has a daughter a little younger than ours - they at least can share their feelings about what it feels like to have your parents put their own happiness ahead of your own.

We were not a couple who fought - we laughed, sometimes hated each other, sometimes adored each other, and sometimes were bored by each other. But I never thought he would do this. It doesn't just affect the couples - it affects their children and their extended families (his nieces and nephews are no longer a part of my life, when they'd called me Aunt since birth).

In spite of that, and the devastation it caused, if he'd been honest from the beginning I could at least respect him.

A partner doesn't have to be "rock-climbing, hang-gliding intensity" to not be boring. The fact that you and others on here don't understand the difference between "thrilling" and "not boring" doesn't bode well for your relationships.

I agree when he or she which ever was first realized the friendship was changing they should have stopped seeing each other. It is even worse that the friendship involved their whole families, spouses, children, and probably even extended family. How horrible for the ones they cheated on to be stabbed in the back not only by your spouse but by people you thought were friends. You take a vow to forsake all others which means when you run into someone you are tempted by you walk away. They should have tried counseling before throwing lives away on lust.

When a marriage is unhappy, the first thing one should do is attempt to find out what's wrong, try to work it out, and then when all else fails, leave knowing you tried your best. Unless there is abuse, you shouldn't run to the next best things or the new distraction.

I have found that usually the Bible is validated by life experience. Do what it says and you and others usually do not suffer consequences. The consequences you might suffer are generally milder than the one's suffered by breaking God's word.

I keep seeing references to "they were in unhappy marriages". How much you want to bet they weren't unhappy until they met and got the hots for each other. If he/she cheats with you, he/she will cheat on you. That's why so many second marriages end in divorce.

I need to chime in- my folks stayed together for the "sake of their kids". Bad move I think. They drove each other to drink, adding a new layer to the mess. Their thoughtfulness drove me to enlist at 16 (Delayed Enlistment Program) and head to boot camp 10 days after my 17th birthday. That was just the tip of it, as the drugs and alcohol really gave me a run for my money later on. Not blaming anyone but myself, but coming up during those tumultuous years took its toll. I often wondered what would have happened had they split years before. The yearning to leave the situation began early on, and by the time I was 13 I knew I wanted out, I just didn't have too many options.

Everyone is making many assumptions concerning these 2 couples. We don't know they had unhappy marriages. But we do know that making this so public is not in their children's best interest, nor does it show a good moral base for these children. So they think "It's Ok to commit infidelity as long as you tell everyone." NO, it is SOOOOO wrong! Infidelity is infidelity, regardless of who you tell.

This story should not have been run. This type of situation is best left known to the couple and their families. And now we have comments from those who until you have experienced something like this in your life, how can you possibly give an objective opinion. There are truths probably to both sides of this sad story. No one goes into marriage wanting to fail. And a good marriage won't be tempted or broken up by infidelity. The article should never have been there for us to judge. I will add though because I've seen many posts about the children: a healthy marriage put the spouses first before the children. If the spouses had truly put each other first - the children would have been more than happy being second knowing the happiness of their parents. If the paper was telling a first person narrative about pedophilia and the things the person did to the child and how the person felt during the experience, would you be so eager to have that published as well since it was "real?" There is nothing wrong with a little discretion.

Well, it's a great deal if your having kids. The spouses of the first marriages now have more legal recourse to get a fair share of the assets and child visitation (not always the case with father's who were not married), and they have the social recognition of a significant loss (for better or worse (worse I think) society doesn't seem to recognize the value of relationships unless they are legally solidified). Basically, I'm happily married but I recognize it is a crap deal much of the time (for me it is good because we are both making monetary/career sacrifices that should be legally recognized if one of use were to die or if our marriage dissolved) and the same relationship can be achieved without marriage but I do think if you are in a long term committed relationship that for the protection of each other, it is good to get some kind of legal contract so if things don't work out or death, the person you love (or at least used to love) is protected.

I couldn't agree with you more; dirty laundry does not belong in the newspaper for all to read, especially the children involved in this situation. Why do people feel the need to share EVERYTHING?!?

This couple has an important message to convey to those of you that are in unhappy marriages, but can't, won't, are too embarassed, or too lazy, to do anything about it.

Create a life of happiness for yourself. In the end, your kids will be sad if they find out that the only reason you stayed married was for them. And you'll have set a bad example that they'd be better off not emulating.

How do you know the ditched spouses didn't deserve to be ditched? Maybe they were alcoholics, drug addicts or just plain boring and uninterested in keeping a marriage going? Maybe they tried to work things out?

You sound angry. Don't project your own miserable situation onto another couple that you don't really know. Maybe the kids are all happier that it turned out this way?
