My husband did this to me. He installed SpectorSoft spyware on my personal computer without my knowledge. That alone violated their licensing agreement. Then he left our house and watched my computer activity for three months, in 30 minute downloads to a fake email address he created. He did this for 90 days, while living apart from me and in counseling to save our marriage. Or so he said. When I discovered the spyware on my computer, he had over 4000 counts of doing this to me. He intercepted businsess proprietary information, attorney client information, etc. He also ascertained all my passwords and broke into all my accounts: my email account, credit cards, phone. Once in my email account he went into my files I had stored on the providers server. This man digitally "raped" me all summer. He feels he did nothing wrong. My attorney said I could send him to jail. But, I won't. He's the father of my children. And, sadly, all I wanted him to do is come home and mend his family. But, he'll NEVER see how he violated me....how deceitful this is...and how he also has broken my trust. This is just wrong and there NEEDS to be punishment for this. People do have a right to their privacy.

when you are married, there is no expectation of privacy between partners. If he did it while they were married,so what. If he did it after the divorce,yes, he should be in trouble.

Employers read their employees' email all the time, without the employees’ knowledge and permission and without the employees' relinquishing their password. What is the big deal about a husband reading a wife's email on a shared laptop?

 oh well.....if you had the marriages and partners I've had......Like the old Ronald Reagan saying......"Trust but Verify" try this one on for size, If your parnter has nothing to hide like infidelity, ask him or her right now on the spot for their email accounts passwords so you can review all. If they refuse, it would raise my suspicions and surely nulify any trust. Legislators and lawers will create any controversial law that will make them a buck$$! This sucks, but in a day and age when vows, promises and the leagal paper they are written on are meaningless to most, infidelity is common place. Perhaps your partner will be bold enough to tell you .......I'm going out to get laid! LOL

my (now) ex asked me to look something up for him in his email account while i was at work and he was unable to access a computer from his location. i discovered a series of messages from a woman whose name i didn't recognize. being a transplant from another state, he had very few friends in the area and mostly hung out with his male co-workers. he had some female friends, but i knew their names and met them in person. i pretended to log out of the account while i was on the phone with him, but continued to read on and it was obvious he was having an affair. at the time, it was purely emotional but it soon escalated to physical. when i confronted him, he denied it vehmently but i saw it with my own eyes. as time went on, he would close his laptop when i entered the room and take his phone with him everywhere when the texting sound went off. i am not stupid, i know the signs of when someone is cheating. needless to say, he is my ex for a reason.

He may have jointly owned the computer but he didn't jointly own her email. It was wrong and there is no justification for it. If the genders were switched and it was a woman snooping, the male comments here would be outrage.

I think that the media is not telling us everything. If they were getting a divorce then yes he shouldn't have read the emails. But if they were still together i believehe had every right to read them. I open and read my husband mail text and emails all the time. Because when we got married it was no longer mine or his it was ours. Our email account is under both of our names. She is just mad because she got caught I hope his laywer fights so that he wont have to pay alimony since she had and affair he has proof now.

That is whats wrong with the world everything is getting easier for partners to cheat on each other. A few years ago we actually had telephone conversasions. Today it is mostly text messaging. Come on how hard can it be to become untrustworthy?

So if I have a gmail account and my company reads my emails on it because I used their computer I could throw the CEO in jail??? Sweeeet.

BTW, we suck as a country. Corporations and government can strip us of our privacy yet some poor sucker gets smacked in the face for the same thing.

Anyone who illegally hacks into someone else's emails, bank, or other accounts should be punished. This computer trespass/invasion of privacy happened to me last year. My ex hacked into my email and bank accounts and printed several documents that contained my personal, medical, and financial information. He then gave these copies to two of my aunts.

I tried to have him prosecuted but the detective said that he could not prove that he hacked into my accounts. HELLO???? Where the hell did he get the emails from??? I certainly did not give them to him. He even told me that he hacked into my accounts. My accounts were password protected for a reason!!!

The law is supposed to protect us, but he got away scott free this time.

 What God has joined together let no man put asunder...you are now 1...technology has created issues in marriages..used to there was 1 phone and anyone could answer it, 1 mailbox and all could check it now everyone thinks no one should answer their mobile phone or check thier email?  I wouldnt mind if my husband read my emails because I have nothing to hide...we are one! 

I caught my ex cheating on me in a similar fashion. If you suspect, you should check.

Anyone who believes something sent through the internet is private is fooling themselves unless additional encryption steps are taken - even still if it's digital, it can be hacked.

We should just do away with marriage. It's no longer enjoyable. Florida Statute on cyber stalking is so vague that it allows for any Judge or Prosecutor to develope their own definition of the term. I faced 5 years for having a facebook page that mentioned my ex wifes name. Adultery was once a crime as well.  And it truth be known it is still on the law books in some states, they just don't push it.  If they want to push reading emails on your computer, they need to push all laws.

If it is the family computer, in the same house, and she/he left their passwords out in an place where anyone in the household can get to them, then imo no crime was commented. 

Since being an adulteress, she was hiding something.  So she should not had been so stupid as to leave it around.  And I don't think people are that stupid, so I think she did it on purpose. 

I read my husband email alot, I even send stuff out for him.  He gave me his password.  I have some things that go to his email that needed forwarding to me.  To save him the trouble I usually do that.

He has my email password as well, as does my son. 

I am not hiding anything and apparently neither is he since he has me checking it for him. 

She did not apply any reasonbale controls to her credentials and therefore should not expect that they were private in the home. Is there a disclaimer on the login that what he did was not legal? Where is the due-dilligence?

If you have to keep track of him or her, that means you don't trust them. Fine! The question is why would anyone stay with someone that they did not trust. Do you think so little of yourself that you think that you deserve such miserable treatment. We marry/pair up according to our self-esteem. Personally, if I am going to be miserable and unhappy, it won't be because someone is making me feel that way. I can do bad by myself. I choose not to do bad and therefore, the rotten apple can go without my wasting my time snooping into their email files. If they did it to me, I'd be through with them. Without trust there is nothing.

I am guilty as charged. If the gut feeling is there that she's a cheating low down dirty a$$ slut pig. Check out all her sources, then evict her and the kids. Because they might belong to the mail man, paper boy, or, if she plays the church game over being at home with you all the time. Check out the connections with the pastor or his other do-boys. My feelings never lied to me yet. Especially, if she DO NOT want the cell phone and the home phone statements to publish the incoming and out going calls. Player!!
