I work in a boutique store that sells baby products including cribs. The industry had wind of this problem long before the first crib was recalled.
I get calls almost everyday from people who have purchased or been given a drop side crib. Many times they are missing parts and call my store to see if we have parts or can direct them. I always advise them that most drop side cribs have been recalled and they should check the labeling on the crib against the CPSC web site. I've also heard about these cribs being sold at community sponsored "garage" sales.
If you have a drop side crib - please, please do not use it without the "kits" offered by many manufacturers. And, please do not pass it off to an unsuspecting purchaser.

Great post, Terri...I hope everyone takes your advice! Drop side cribs are so dangerous!
I raised 6 children with a drop side crib - what happened to the quality? Are they imported, or made in the US?
Both...these cribs have always posed a safety hazard but we didn't hear about the tragedies because there was never a database like there is now
