<p>I am one of his students and I cannot express deeply enough how much he really was the most inspirational person I have ever met. The guy didn't have flaws. He was a disciplinarian when he had to be but you always walked away as a better person. He taught me the value of integrity, which I don't think too many people understand anymore. He believed that all the students could and would change the world, he really was the change he wanted to see in the world. His public memorial was held on short notice and there was over 1500 people who came and I know that was just a fraction of how many people would have came if it wasn't such short notice. Please, if you have any information or you would like to donate to the reward fund anything would help. I truly wish that what I was saying about him wasn't true, because this would be so much easier to deal with but we truly lost one of the most exceptional people I have met in my life. </p>
Well thinking about his situation 10pm is pretty late & if you ring my doorbell at 10 I will be armed and extremely cautious approaching the door...
Who the hell comes to your door at 10pm 8) NOBODY for the most part and friends do come over occasionally but they make a habit of calling letting you know.
My wife and I spent the winter in Bradenton, not far from North Port. Violence in that area is on the rise and lots of residents are upset about the lenient punishment given to offenders when they are caught. If you are going to that area my advice is to be very careful about what areas you go to, etc. (Maybe better yet, don't go there).
Big Al, he was woken up after dozing off on the couch with his wife. It's highly likely that like most people he wasn't instantly alert. Way of life, experiences, neighborhood and other factors dictate your response to certain situations. Your experience is that the people who visit you would not come by your house after 10pm without a call. Perhaps this man's experience was that his neighbor who gets home late would occasionally knock at his door to tell him his garage door is not all the way closed again or that his sprinklers are still on etc. According to the article by all appearances he was well liked and respected and probably never imagined anyone would come to his home to harm him much less knock on the door to do it. It gives us all comfort to think we will be prepared and know what to do in a bad situation but we just never really know until we're there. Even then what we do the first time around doesn't automatically indicate what we will do if there is a second time around.
My sincerest condolences to this man's family and to the people that loved and lost him.
No Bob I am just thinking like a father with 2 very small children and a wife that's pretty much helpless I am not where he is @ his stage of life.
In a world gone mad full of sickos I have to be on my toes & yes I agree his situation might be different his age and location and lifestyle 8( I hope they catch his killers and all involved..
Al, maybe you shouldn't piggyback on to this comment. Do you have no common sense and consideration? If you just HAVE to push your agenda, could you make your own comment thread and get off Jaryds?
Condolences to his family and friends. I hope they find justice.
I hope they find the persons who are responsible and bring them to justice. It just goes to show that no matter how decent a person or how well you try to live your life it can be taken at any time. We all need to tell the people we love just how much we love them as often as we can. This poor man never got to say his goodbye's to his wife, kids and grandchildren. Its just so tragic.
No but apparently the victim was all about being a big bad martial artist. Most I have known, and I was one, and have retired from teaching it, are all about being either bad ass, or about cult of personality. I would look into former students real hard. Martial arts attract the wrong people for the wrong reasons. Some are looking for something to bolster low self esteem. Other are looking for a tool to augment their bullying. If he rejected some punk or embarassed him or them in class, I would not be surprised if this was not payback. The shooters "wanted to show the big bad tae kwon do instructor" all his skills were useless against a bullet. That fits with the mentality of some of the martial arts students I have known, and some instructors too.
Whoever commented that he was a "bad ass". I was a neighbor and nobody would ever have guessed in the neighborhood that he was a master tae kwan do expert. He spent most of his time working hard, and tending to his yard. He was the kind of guy who came out and helped his wife, unload the groceries from the trunk. It may turn out it was a student who was mentally ill, but if so, I'd be willing to bet that some good kid, will come forward with information. I've taught school and let me tell you, the guy had to be pretty special to have as many good comments made about him as were made. I have faith in the student body at Palmetto to come forward and tell anything that might help solve this case...and that faith extends to some very nice kids taking tae kwan do classes.
Bad ass? I think you're talking out of yours. Ken was a loving, gentle man who only believed in good. He never used martial arts outside of the dojang and he taught that violence was not a solution to anything.
just another reason why everybody as an " american " should exercise their right to bare arms " protect your second amendment rights before they are taken away !!!
Owning a gun would not have helped this man--unless he was in the habit of grabbing a weapon every time he answered the door, which only the paranoid and fearful would do--and yes that describes a lot of the pro-gun crowd.
As for this odd murder, it almost certainly was not random. It's likely that someone who knew him fairly well was involved. I'm sure police will check his insurance policy...
I am all for the right to own a gun, but in this case, it would not have helped this family. What may have made a difference would be if he had NOT opened the door before looking through the peep hole. Of course, after seeing no one there, most of us may have opened the door anyway, wondering 'what the heck?' How frustrating for this family to have no clue what so ever, as to who would want to do this. Some people hold a grudge for the longest time, stewing over it while plotting revenge. Could be someone had a grudge for some inconsequential mis-conceived offence. There are lots of crazies in this world.
I hope the family can get justice, and these criminals can be found, tried, and sent to jail for the rest of their lives.
I don't understand how this man or his wife could have done anything to protect themselves, even if they owned a gun, it happended so fast, even if he had a gun in his back pocket, so I don't know how this could have been prevented, so sad, I guess just don't answer to door at all unless someone responds, but 2 men could easily kick in the door, my prayers are with his family
Nonsense. Implicit in your rediculous comment is the assumption that homeowners routinely answer the door carrying a loaded gun and an itchy trigger finger.
The killers were the ones exercising their 2nd amendment rights.
How can you say it would not have helped this family hmm WRONG maybe some caution before running to open the front door at 10 pm.
I wouldn't look through the peep hole in the first place cause you have absolutely no idea who is standing and how many are standing at your door 8)
Lorene I only hope just because someone rings your doorbell at 10pm do not go to open it until you have called out who's there & it would be prudent to arm yourself before going to the door 8)
like you said there are lots of crazies in this world we live in and opening the front door at 10 pm is extremely bad judgment call...
I asked all the ladies in my office just now and their answer was hell no and I would arm myself..
The man's right to have full body armor might have helped him--but not so much a gun.
I wonder whether being struck by lightning on a cloudless day or being attacked by a shark in a river or being the victim of a home invasion (though it doesn't sound like the home was invaded) is more likely.
I imagine that the issue was a family member or "friend" who wanted him out of the way--perhaps the ex-wife, perhaps the new wife, perhaps someone with a crush on the new wife. Unless he was involved in a shady business deal, like the husband and wife who were killed in the "ninja" raid a few years ago, it's most like a family issue (or a case of mistaken identity).
But, no, carrying a gun wouldn't have helped him unless he was accustomed to carrying one every time he opened the door--loaded and ready to shoot.
Hay you brainless dweeb, first off no one is going to take your gun away unless you have been a naughty boy, then you lose all your toys.
Second from what I read, this fellow did not have time to get a gun unless he was packing when he answered the door…most people do not carry a gun all the time…most people are not paranoid.
Lighten up. The debate is over. Both the SUpreme Court and the the President recognoze that the 2nd amendment applies to individuals as well as militias.
Butu if you did not market unreasoning fear, then the NRA would lose dues paying members and the right wing would lose one more lie to the truth.
Something about the wife's comments. What I notice is that people who are guilty of a crime like this, speak in terms about themselfs. The wife is talking more about how this affects her ( being a suspect). Also, the comment about the guns rights people is way out in left field. My experience is that gun rights people are all for self defense and many take self defense classes. Maybe, the reason they shot him so fast was that they new he was a self defense expert and they wanted to get him before he made his move. Anyway, my deepest sympothy to the family.
Unfortunately a gun would not have helped this man at that moment. Good people with no enemies do not answer their door with a gun in their hand. They go to the door with intentions of greeting another good person. Men with enemies would go to the door with fear and think that another person, such as themselves, is on the other side of the door, therefore they would go to the door with a gun. The wrong folks have and use guns. How you solve that problem, we will never know.
Lance the stupidity of your post is beyond belief. No one I know goes to the door with a gun in hand. How ridiculous!
My condolences to his family. I hope they find the people who did this and give them the harshest sentence possible. There should be no mercy for someone who would do this type of crime.
When I feel the need to answer my door with a pistol pointed at someone on the other side, I believe I'll stop answering my door. I say that, by the way, being very much in favor of firearms and conceal carry but I also use common sense.
I have no idea just what the likelihood of it would be, but there is always the disturbing possibility that this murder could have been some sort of gang initiation.
If an aspiring thug wants to 'prove' how bad they are, if even only to themselves, harming a person noted for their good deeds would probably be the most effective way to do that. It's entirely possible this man's reputation preceded him and he'd never met either of his assailants before.
I exercise my "right to bare arms" whenever I wear my totally awesome pink cutoff tank-top.
Anyway - when I hear a knock on the door and I'm not expecting anyone I check the peephole... if nobody is there, I don't open it and ask "Who's there?" - no response/no sight - no entry. Don't need to bring a gun to the door like some psycho.
Shuklack, agreed. If someone repeatedly knocks at your door, fails to identify himself when asked, and is not visible through the peephole, call the police to come check it out, that's what I would do, but maybe that's just because I do not trust anyone.
Guns are obviously not the problem. If they didn't have guns they would've stabbed him with a knife. Without a knife they would've used a baseball bat. Without a baseball bat they would've beat him to death with their fists. What are you gonna do, take their fists away? *rolls eyes*, come on people. Violence has occurred since the beginning of time, and taking away guns would not help. The only way to get guns out of the crim's hands is to STOP MAKING GUNS. Gun laws do not help, they only hurt rightful gun owners. If you think crims CAN'T get guns illegally than you are an idiotic maggot. Guns would not have helped this man though, obviously he had no chance whatsoever. To the gun hating liberals here: stop making lies, stop killin babies, and stop forcing your bull@!$%# down my throat.
How many drive by stabbing, clubbing and beating can you cite.... Guns kill easy and from distance.... nothing else can match its detached, impersonal and effective deadliness…
My sister and family lived in North Port for more than 25 years. It was a really nice community when they moved there. Then, about ten years ago crime began to get more pronounced. Of course, this is/was probably true in a lot of communities. What happened in North Port, though, was that the police department and community officials were completely unresponsive. My sister and her husband called about drug houses in their neighborhood, about horrible blight conditions that affected their property, about being verbally assaulted/threatened by some neighbors and NOTHING was done. After about five years of that they moved elsewhere in the state. North Port lost good, decent citizens and kept people who were completely the opposite. (This may have nothing to do with the current, tragic situation, but when there is an undercurrent of crime that is not dealt with in a community, it sets a stage for incidents like this to happen.)
It's suspicious that they only shot him - doesn't seem like a random crime. ps I never open my door unless I am expecting someone. very fishy that she joined him to "check again" when no one was at the door.
If she did, she had to have been assisted by her boyfriend, because how else would she have gotten rid of the gun in the short time between the shooting, the call to 911, the arrival of the police?
stop and think ...... you dont think the police dont have the wife, at the top of the list of suspects? think again....... who is to gain from this mans death ? its standard police procedure.
It sounds contrived. Was the wife the only witness? Why didn't the masked men shoot her too? Is there any evidence other than her story that he actually answered the door?
I'm not a detective at all.. just odds and MOs. I wonder if the police would have checked her hands for the residue left over (sorry, don't know a ton about guns), although she could obviously have cleaned her hands or wore gloves. But I have a morbid curiosity for this sort of thing- psychology of people.
She is probably going to be thoroughly investigated. Her past included. They'll be waiting to see if she makes a mistake. For someone who is so popular and revered it really had to be completely random or someone is going to gain something.
For those who think it had to be a boyfriend to help her, maybe just someone who was offered a cut of the money? This sort of thing happens quite often and it's someone very close to the victim. Not always though and hopefully people will remember that and realize that they can't just convict her because of that.
My condolences to all of the family, friends and students of this obviously well loved man.
However the whole this sounds fishy to me. Aside from a hired hit, why would any 2 men for any reason just show up at someones house, shoot them (leaving witnesses) and leave. They didnt take anything, didnt make any demands, didnt even say anything? Just ring the door bell and shoot? Sounds like murder for hire to me, I have to agree with others on the board, I think the wife was involved. I dont think she shot him, but definitely involved.
I don't like to point fingers when the evidence isn't there...but I have to admit (and I do some investigative work, though this is not my area) that she's acting highly suspicious. Just because she didn't pull the trigger doesn't mean she didn't hire someone professional to do so.
As MelBel said: why would anyone just walk up to the house, and shoot someone? They didn't shoot her, they didn't steal anything (although the article mentions the house was previously robbed), there's no outside motive. What also raises the alarm, to me, is that she is quick to point fingers at pro-gun groups, which is not something that most people would leap to. Why not simply say a disgruntled former student? That's more believable.
For the record, the mistaken identity also seems quite feasible as well. It would explain why they rang the doorbell and hid...probably trying to make sure they had the right person before they shot, maybe.
It would appear, just from reading the article, that having a gun would not have helped this gentleman. Â He went to the door and that was the end. Â He would not have had time to react even if he went to the door with a gun. Â I hope they find the thugs who did this and hope they both get the death penalty, although the death penalty will not stop this sort of violence. Â It was either a case of mistaken identity on the part of the gunmen or there was a drug deal left unsettled. Â
He most assuredly did not have time to react. Whomever killed him was well aware of his status as a martial arts instructor, and knew that hesitation when they had the element of surprise would have changed the entire story. Given he did not have the time to defend himself hand-to-hand, he couldn't have had time to react with a firearm either.
Lance, that's a nonsense statement if I ever saw one. Do you open the door with a gun in your hand in anticipation of getting shot? This man apparently advocated peaceful resolutions of conflict. If we all did that and actually worked on it, this might be a better world. By the way, you need to read up on the history and purpose of the 2nd amendment. It wasn't designed so every nutcase could carry a gun and shoot his neighbors.
Some maturity would be nice here. If you don't believe in God, fine. Start your own little comment IF you must let everyone know YOUR OPINION. You don't have to be an @sshole and look for any opportunity to p1ss on someone else's beliefs.
I can't believe God into existence and you can't disbelieve him out of existence. Heaven and Hell are either waiting for us or they are not. I choose to believe there is more to life than death. Going through this world with men raping innocent women, women in despair killing their family by driving their van into a lake, wars, $14T deficits, etc. And then you die and have worms crawl through your eye socket? That's not good enough for me. Is it for you . . . ?
I am not a big proponent of organized religion as I believe each has its merits and its faults but I would rather live my life as if there is a God; die and find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't, and die to find out there is (and that I pissed him off) :D
I'm Catholic and try to follow the teaching of Jesus Christ so I can't speak to the motives of people that "behave in such a heinous manner". I don't think the killing in this article was due to a religious belief, was it? I also haven't fought in a war so can't answer to the motives of those that have. I'm guessing, but I assume that many that fight in wars think they are protecting their liberty in this life (but you'd have to ask them to be sure).
I refuse to believe this "is all there is" because a God-less world has no definition for love, compassion, and the concept of right & wrong. These things can't be measured or weighed. They can't be described by a color or proven mathematically but we all know they exist. I assume they are the result of the God I believe in who is the God of every human being on earth.
There is petty fighting between the religions and that is unfortunate. You will see our present Pope trying to heal the wounds from the past between Catholics and Jews. You also saw our last Pope tell George Bush that the wars he started are "un-just".
I don't think you see any of this pettyness in my posts, do you?
Its just strange that she was right there and they didn't shoot her. After saying nothing, it would seem they were trying to cover all of their tracks. She would have to be a suspect at this point of conspiracy...regardless of her statement that she passed the tests. I hope not though!
Agreed, a pro, if this was a hit by someone other than the wife, would have taken out the wife too. They knew not to give the guy a chance to react since he's a martial arts instructor, so we have to presume that they either knew the victim, were pros who could do research, or both. My money is on the wife.
she could be behind it....sure "she" says the polygraph test cleared her, but the article also said that the police dept. never confirmed that statement. I'm also with the people who are saying why the heck would they kill him and not her if she was right there with him.......then again just because they didnt shoot her then doesnt mean that they wouldn't go back for her if she wasn't involved, because she was right there & the main witness.
when someone knocks on my door unannounced at 10pm on a sun. night, yes i'll be armed..... i don't think pointing your finger at them and blurting shame! shame! will work.....
ck - then you're a sad person. And, I doubt you're actually going to be armed to answer your door. What an absurd statement. Unless, of course, you have reason to believe someone is out to get you.
ck your a smart man who knows the world we live in is dangerous it's funny how people think you a paranoid freak cause you love life and would fiercely guard you and your loved ones from evil.
you people don't live in the real world, look around you! big al knows! it would be great if the only people that knocks on your door late at night were 'nice people'. take your blinders off. tell us gun toters what you would have done instead of taking swipes at our opinion and beliefs.
In this day and age of cell phones, 9 times out of 10 I know in advance if a friend is going to be knocking on my door. If there is an unannounced knock on my door at 10 PM, I am not throwing it open. I am standing off to the side, behind the locked door and asking in a loud voice "who is it?".
I am not blaming the victim, I am just telling you that, sadly, this is how I feel we have to protect ourselves these days.
gone or ear, you are getting carried away, these people were hiding then attacked! i don't know what kind of vistors you have but mine don't behave that way...... btw, are you female? if not, i now understand your comments.
Gone or Ear, LOL. Yeah, I am with you. Why do something cautious? That would make too much sense. Better to come out blazing like Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie! haha
When someone rings my doorbell at 10pm I check to see if someones there, and if not, I don't answer it. And if no one is there I send my husband with his gun around from the back. And yes, it has happened before. Kids who were playing were lucky that my husband isn't trigger happy.
I would have to say, if the wife screamed loudly enough that the neighbors came running, she would not have had any time to hide a weapon, or was the GSR off of herself and her clothing, which I'm sure the police immediately checked for. So as of right now I'd say she is probably innocent.
How do you know that simply because the wife was screaming, "she would not have had time to hide a weapon?" I didn't read anything about a timeline here - so we have no idea how long after the shooting she screamed. Could've been 2 minutes, could've been 20 minutes. Unless, of course, you were there . . .
she may have hired them. look for a large outflow of cash from a bank account or a cashing in of his life insurance and the entire amount not being placed in a bank or other account.
How do we know that she screamed for the neighbors right at the time the crime took place and not maybe 15 minutes later, after she got rid of the evidence? Did they check the blood's coagulation?
This all played out in a very short span of time. According to witnesses and ella. 1) doorbell rings, he wakes and looks out, saying, "Nobody there." Their house is well lit and they have large clear glass doors. Kids are often out on the streets until late playing under lights and in driveways so it is believable that a neighbor could come to the door. 2) She comes up behind him. I imagine the door was open at this point, he looks out again and is shot, supposedly staggering back in the room saying dial 9ll. 3) She's in shock, goes to office right near him and calls. Shots are heard by neighbors as well as her scream. 4) Neighbors see car tail lights hightailing down street. Neighbor's rush towards area but as they are coming towards house, Northport police are responding. 5) emergency vehicles show up and work on Ken Ellis 6) Ken is transported to hospital, Ella is in shock 6) Neighbors gather near the house in shocked disbelief. Close neighbors are interviewed instantly and asked social security numbers etc so they can do instant background checks 7) area is marked a crime scene so no one can come down roads. Cops canvass entire area in at least a 6 block radius, continuing going door to door until late in the evening and following up the next day.
Lance, you are a real airhead. You can wear bare arms or long sleevs. The choice is yours. You DO have the right to bear arms, but AIRHEAD the other guy shot first. Got it. You open the door and the other guy kills you. Why you open the door at ten pm is another question. I don't open the door at all without hearing a voice explanatrion on the other side of the door. And "Special Delivery" won't work.
Pretty much. The only way this guy could have defended himself was to shoot first. Or held a gun from the moment he opened the door.
I would personally do the same- find out who and why before opening the door. BUT I live close to downtown, live alone mostly, etc, etc. He could be in a secured cul de sac or whatever and didn't have as much reason to be paranoid that everyone's out to get you. Sad for him and it's shooter's fault he died, not him. This is getting ridiculous.
We need to know more. It may take a while before all the facts come out. Nonetheless, he seemed a good person. Condolencses to those who love and admired him.
In Florida, I would say the most likely cause was mistaken identity, wrong address; these killers are no geniuses. Sadly, life is very cheap in the drug trade in FL.
As a FL resident, I tend to agree with Keen. I just read an article today about another woman in the same general area (one county north) who was murdered this week. The story stated that this is the 2nd tragedy to affect her family in the last year. Some of her relatives realized their house was on fire. When they tried to escape, they were greeted w/ armed men who forced them back inside. Turns out, the armed men, who were later caught had the wrong house. The good news - neighbors spotted the house on fire, called 911 and went to help. The armed men fled, but those inside were unharmed.
As a Florida resident, I hear a LOT about hits made by wives on their husbands and viceversa, so I wouldn't be so quick as to call it a case of "mistaken identity" just yet.
Read carefully. She did say she passed it. Until these two individuals wearing black are caught, everyone is a suspect...that means, friends, neighbors, students at school, co-workers, people who had business dealing with the man, people who were former Tae kwan do students....anyone they basically came in contact with. If this had happened to any of you, you would be going through the same scrutiny that the Ellis family, friends, neighbors, co-workers etc are going through. I am sure they are even checking any discipline reports that happened in his classroom for years...cops have to gather all the pieces. Sometimes that can be terribly hard on the family. I think everyone should put themselves in the shoes of the victims and not concentrate on whether or not you should bring a gun to the door. I do not believe anyone living on that street would have done anything differently than Ken Ellis did. You just do not expect something like that.
Ella Ellis has also speculated that perhaps right-to-bear-arms advocates targeted her husband because he was teaching kids to use tae kwon do rather than hardware to settle their disputes,
whaaaaat? right-to-bear arms advocates do not generally go around advocating gunning down innocent people
I would be taking a VERY close look at this lady if I were the authorities
Yes, this comment was the red flag. The fact that she thinks she needs to provide an "explanation," and that her explanation is this freaking bogus is a tremendous red flag. I'm sure they are looking at her carefully.
But, then, maybe she is just nutty. It will be interesting to watch the investigation.
This is a terrible loss for his entire family and the community but as I was reading the tragic story there it was, BAM!!! Her "right to bear arms advocates" statement jumped right out of left field, seemingly entirely out of place??? And maybe it was just the way the reporter worded it did did anyone notice that the article states that "the neighbors were alerted by her screams". Does that mean that the neighbors didn't hear the gunshot(s)?
I agree...very very odd that she would offer such a strange possibility, combined with the fact that the police will not confirm she actually passed a polygraph, and then knowing she was only married to him for 2 years, I afraid it does not look good for her. If she's innocent, what a shame for so many things to be working against her. but it's not looking like it'll be easy to rule her out. Personally, if I had to say one way or the other....she'd be my first pick for being involved. With him out of the way it's probably all hers....and she more than likely won't have to ever share the estate with 6 others.
Well, if she believes the gun's right advocates could be behind this for teaching kid's martial arts instead of playing Black Ops, then she surely realizes she could have just made #2 on their list.
You guys sound like you're paying attention!!! I'm proud for ya!
Anyone who blames 'gun rights advocates' for any such thing is either certifiable or trying cover their own tracks! I can tell you this, though...if the 'gun rights advocates' decide to target someone, probably the most logical choice would be some of those idiots in DC
why would wife put such a thing like that out there? Is she trying to direct suspicion elsewhere? How could someone filled with grief even think of making that kind of statement. I always say....Give someone enough rope and they will surely hang themselves!
I am riding on your coat tail on this one ...So how much is his life insurance worth ... anyone looked into that part of his life yet ? I am sure his widow has!!!
well..a couple of things. This crime was not random...they knew that the victim would be home. The suspects gave them time to come to the door and them hiding indicates that they did not want any of the neighbors to see them or suspect anything suspicious. I say the wife is very suspect at this time. He was shot but she wasn't? Was it routine for them to have visitors around 10 at night? I mean I would get up with my spouse to answer the door if it was at an odd time of night. Now a days you ask who it is before you answer the door. If they don't answer then oh well..that would warrent a call to the police right there. Maybe having some protection would have worked. As soon as I know someone is breaking into my house right then and there I am firing and asking questions later.
This was a hit. Plain and simple. Somebody wanted this guy dead (or some other guy, and mistook the teacher for him). Assuming the presence of two perpetrators as the wife claims, this doesn't feel right.
If it was a botched burglary, the burglars would have fled -- they were already outside and hadn't been seen. Indeed, the homeowners were withdrawing from the area. A robber would not attack someone who hadn't seen them and was starting to leave (nor kill one person and leave the other totally unharmed).
It wasn't a crime of passion or in the heat of the moment. The killers were wearing masks, rang the doorbell, waited a few seconds, and then started shooting only when the door was starting to be closed, which is odd. It also lacks any "passion" such as the use of an overly large number of bullets (as might have been fired by someone who is emotionally charged, seeking vengeance, etc.). If anything, the crime was very unemotional, anti-septic. Very . . . professional.
This was a hit. An execution. A contract killing. Call it what you will.
If you can figure out why someone would want this man dead, you will find the killers. My money is on the wife. First, she wasn't harmed, even though by her testimony she was right there. Second, the whole door closing thing is weird. Why would they wait until the door was starting to be closed? Like maybe that was the sign to strike? "OK, now, I'll move away from the door, and when he starts to close it, that's when you attack."
Yes, that last part is speculation on my part, but it is a very weird sequence of events. I hope justice can be done in this case.
You hit the nail on the head. The killer probably didn't want him to have time to react and that's also why he waited until the door was almost closed and the teacher would have let his guard down, thinking it was someone's attempt at a prank. Had the assault happened when the door was open, the killer may have risked being taken down, considering the teacher was a martial artist, so the wife may have told the killer to wait until the door was almost closed to ensure this would be a total surprise to him and he'd be the one to die, not the killer.
You have to consider the neighborhood in your conclusions. l) houses are very close and people are often outdoors with spot lights working on cars or even sitting in lanais or swimming. 2) people are all up at that hour, since the neighborhood is of mixed ages, so having this happen at l0:15 is odd, but believable when you think the killer wanted someone to come to the door. 3) The House right across street has about 5 cars coming and going at all times, and they have children and dogs. Almost all neighbors were home at this time and neighbors did hear shots and responded. 4) Neighboring Houses have large barking dogs, so if this neighborhood was targeted it would not be the smartest place to choose, which may mean they had not scouted the neighborhood well. 5) If it was a hit as suggested, the murderers had to know that they had to get out quickly. 6) They risked parking their car in a stupid position so it could have been seen and identified, that wasn't smart. They drove recklessly down a road where neighbors commonly put out cones to warm people that children play on the street. Everyone on the block looks for cars that drive too quickly. I think it wasn't a professional hit because they did too many stupid things. If this had been professional I would think they would have used a silencer, shot both individuals, parked a distance away and not been noticed leaving the scene of the crime. Once the shots occurred, the wife screamed and neighbors rushed to their doors to check what happened. The screams and shots were almost instantaneous. An unidentifiable car was seen speeding down the road by a number of individuals. This occurred in seconds. The shooter had to race about 50 yards and jump in a car that was parked after killing the victim. Then the two individuals identified as wearing black clothing and masks, exited the neighborhood driving in such a way that they should have been identified under normal circumstances. it does sound like the man was targeted, but it could also be that the shooter was young, scared and knew he had to get out of there quick. I think someone will open their mouth and blab, and that the good kids that respected Ken Ellis will come forward with a clue that helps solve this crime. In the meantime lets cut the family some slack. Put yourself in their shoes.
A big lesson for all. Do not ever think you have no enermies, this could happen to any one of us. A man's enermy could be a member of his own household. Let us all learn from this and stop been unrealistic gun experts. My prayer is for those involved in this to be all caught and prosecuted to the fullest.
Just reading the article raises a lot of flags to me:
1. Opening the door of your house at 10pm without asking who is there.
2. The guy was 61 years old, but only married to his current wife for 2 years.
3. She reports 2 "masked men" came to the door and killed him without saying a word, but she was unharmed. How often does this really happen?
4. He just had a burglary to his house 4 months ago (in December)
Seems very suspicious, and that is only what the article mentions. I am sure there is a ton more that was not mentioned in the article... I'm just saying ....
what do we know about her past? She was a Russian immigrant, how did she get here. Was she suppose to go into some kind of prostitute ring but she escaped, now they found her?
Just throwing things out there....................
Seems very suspicious, and that is only what the article mentions. I am sure there is a ton more that was not mentioned in the article... I'm just saying
I agree, something "smells" I will defiantly be watching this story. God bless him-
I'm sure the wife is involved. The story doesn't really give much detail. The lesson here is that you have all of your clothes made out of kevlar, including your pajamas.
explain to me...how is being able to own a gun going to help in this scenario...I mean if I toted a gun to my doorway...all I would get is a shoot out where most likely I would be killed...a few others...or I would be killed...please...and those saying the poor wife did it...you should be very ashamed of yourselves..I mean if that was the case...I am sure the police would have suspected and some evidence would hae been brought out...Second...plenty of couples cohabitate these days...that does not make them any less loving or wanting to knock off their spouse...many do this because they have been hurt before...scared to commit...and for financial reasons...If it was a hit...they would not need to shoot the woman since they were mostly masked...how hurtful can you be...do you realize this woman and her family probably read your post...?
Unfortunately, you may be surprised at the outcome. This happens ALL the time in this country. Maybe we are jaded, but I don't think we should be ashamed .... the murderer should be ashamed.
what makes you so sure she didnt do it??? just because they haven't found anything on her yet doesn't mean they won't....one sign she could've...she claims she passed the polygraph test...police never confirmed it.....but i hope she didn't do it & wasnt involved.....my condolences do go out to all of his family & friends
A man of integrity, truth, and great influence was gunned down in America and everybody is
surprised? I'm no conspiracy theorist but it seems that throughout history this has happened many times(including many instances that people never knew about) . I wonder why????
Education is an enemy to those in positions of authority. Maybe I'm wrong.
Such a Tragic Loss, My Condolences To The Entire Family....
My Condolences to his family.
That's it bigal, find fault in the victim.
My condolences to the people who loved him, however if I were the investigator, I would be looking closely at the person with the most to gain.
It will be interesting to see this story unfold.
Keep it cool - whatever guy I can say and type what I want when I want 8) last time I checked it's a free country.
They're appealing to your decency, Al. Not everything in the world is about you and your big tough guns.
Apparently, however, it's a lost cause.
@Jaryd......a beautiful tribute. I hope you were able to let him know of his positive influence on you before he died.
Yeah, that'll work..... doofus
Do you always answer your door with gun in hand and pointed at your guests?
I do see where Lance is coming from. It's not a gun nut thing, it's a "better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it" thing.
But yes, I agree that either way it would not have helped in this situation.
Irrelevant- even if he exercised his right to own a gun how many people are packing when they answer their door?
how does that work, if you see the whites of their eyes then shoot?
This man's right to bear arms would not have helped him in this situation.
@Lance,
I do not understand. By the "right to bare arms" do you mean like wearing short-sleeved shirts and vests and tank tops????
OK folks, as I have said before: How about we blame the criminal and NOT the gun or one's right to own one.
Gone or Ear,
That is hilarious. Reminds me of the commercial with the guy hooked up with electrodes, "no pain, no pain." Ironic that he portrays a Russian.
Shuklack, agreed. If someone repeatedly knocks at your door, fails to identify himself when asked, and is not visible through the peephole, call the police to come check it out, that's what I would do, but maybe that's just because I do not trust anyone.
No, sneak out the other door and come up behind them, with your 12gauge loaded with XX buck.
My condolences to the family.
Your comment is ignorant...
(This may have nothing to do with the current, tragic situation, but when there is an undercurrent of crime that is not dealt with in a community, it sets a stage for incidents like this to happen.)
it is job security for LE
It's suspicious that they only shot him - doesn't seem like a random crime. ps I never open my door unless I am expecting someone. very fishy that she joined him to "check again" when no one was at the door.
It's also tragic and sad for all who loved him.
ms. hoo,
Nobody is truly sure what she did, since the only other person that was there isnt talking.
The wife did it
Maybe...
It stands to reason the killers were at the memorial... 1500 suspects..
Crackerjack work, Detective.
How nice it is that you can so whimsically cast horrible aspersions on people you've never met with no care for the consequences.
Due process? Who needs it!
hiboy00 ...... i think so too ...... she took a polygraph but did she pass? Was there a large insurance policy on the husband?
MelBel, I have to agree with your assessment. Plus, look at her eyes.
I think your right!her eyes don't look too happy to be there in that photo.
May God watch over this man and his family. Hopefully the shooters are caught and are no longer on the streets.
god knows all and rarely, if ever, reacts
Remember those words when you stand before God to be judged
Some maturity would be nice here. If you don't believe in God, fine. Start your own little comment IF you must let everyone know YOUR OPINION. You don't have to be an @sshole and look for any opportunity to p1ss on someone else's beliefs.
I know children who behave better.
im atheist so let it be, let it be
Rod
I can't believe God into existence and you can't disbelieve him out of existence. Heaven and Hell are either waiting for us or they are not. I choose to believe there is more to life than death. Going through this world with men raping innocent women, women in despair killing their family by driving their van into a lake, wars, $14T deficits, etc. And then you die and have worms crawl through your eye socket? That's not good enough for me. Is it for you . . . ?
if there is a heaven and hell then we all go to heaven because this life sure seems to be hell for alot of people.
I agree with your there. It doesn't have to, though.
I am not a big proponent of organized religion as I believe each has its merits and its faults but I would rather live my life as if there is a God; die and find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't, and die to find out there is (and that I pissed him off) :D
Gone
Come on people this article has NOTHING to do with any kind of Religion or lack of at all. Grow up!!!!!!!
Utter - Well said.
Tex - This article may have nothing to do with religion but it has a whole lot to do with God. The guy that was shot is talking to him right now . . .
Crocodile tears by the wife! She is behind this execution.! I watched her on the Today Show, and it was like watching Susan Smith all over again!
Its just strange that she was right there and they didn't shoot her. After saying nothing, it would seem they were trying to cover all of their tracks. She would have to be a suspect at this point of conspiracy...regardless of her statement that she passed the tests. I hope not though!
who murders someone and leaves a witness? what is the difference between life and life X 2, or death sentence and death sentence X 2?
And "Special Delivery" won't work.
how about "Land Shark?"
This is getting ridiculous.
not to say she did not pay someone to do it... ya just never know about these things...
We need to know more. It may take a while before all the facts come out. Nonetheless, he seemed a good person. Condolencses to those who love and admired him.
his wife stated that she remains a suspect even though she did the polygraph thing.
she didnt say she passed it.
rephrase, she claims it cleared her but the police did not confirm it.
That begs the question-which was the right house, and why?
Reads strange to me as well. I am inclined to suspect the wife.
whaaaaat? right-to-bear arms advocates do not generally go around advocating gunning down innocent people
I would be taking a VERY close look at this lady if I were the authorities
....methinks she has something to hide
That comment makes me think she is an idiot... or involved even. It's right up there with "my dog ate my homeowork".
.
why would wife put such a thing like that out there?
Robbo- I thought that was a weird thing to say myself. Maybe it was Ted Nugent?
LOL...
News flash:
"wife now says one of the gunman was wearing a cammo cowboy hat and had a guitar strapped to his back"
I answered my door with a 9mm after dark when i lived in port charlotte witch is the next town over.
Hmm another person who is smart 8) and cautious 8)
LOL!
I agree, something "smells" I will defiantly be watching this story. God bless him-
I'm sure the wife is involved. The story doesn't really give much detail. The lesson here is that you have all of your clothes made out of kevlar, including your pajamas.
Kevlasr pajamas would not have helped Gabby.
We all have a time to die, Kevlar or not.
explain to me...how is being able to own a gun going to help in this scenario...I mean if I toted a gun to my doorway...all I would get is a shoot out where most likely I would be killed...a few others...or I would be killed...please...and those saying the poor wife did it...you should be very ashamed of yourselves..I mean if that was the case...I am sure the police would have suspected and some evidence would hae been brought out...Second...plenty of couples cohabitate these days...that does not make them any less loving or wanting to knock off their spouse...many do this because they have been hurt before...scared to commit...and for financial reasons...If it was a hit...they would not need to shoot the woman since they were mostly masked...how hurtful can you be...do you realize this woman and her family probably read your post...?
Unfortunately, you may be surprised at the outcome. This happens ALL the time in this country. Maybe we are jaded, but I don't think we should be ashamed .... the murderer should be ashamed.
Um.... I don't think the woman and family are reading these posts. If the woman is reading these posts, that is a bad sign. That's serial killer talk.
Oh and sometimes, details are withheld from the public as it IS an ongoing investigation and releasing too much information can compromise it.
what makes you so sure she didnt do it??? just because they haven't found anything on her yet doesn't mean they won't....one sign she could've...she claims she passed the polygraph test...police never confirmed it.....but i hope she didn't do it & wasnt involved.....my condolences do go out to all of his family & friends
