I think parents need to take more responsibility for their kids' eating habits. When I was a kid we only got "dessert" after dinner, we were not allowed to eat candy and cookies all day long. We RARELY went to McDonalds for a meal and when we did it was a treat, not a staple in our diets. We were told to "go outside and play!" if we were hanging out watching too much TV and driving mom crazy. The focus should be on parents teaching children healthy eating and exercise habits so that when they are in their adult years they already have established good habits and aren't trying to break 20+ year old habits and learn new ones.

The Campaign against obesity is going about it the wrong way. The are sending the wrong message to the "Why" more and more children or obese. Its not eating junk food and being lazy. More and more Children are DEPRESSED today. For whatever reason.. losing a family member to a death like cancer, parent in the military, bullying in school, just these three reasons has a likelyhood; since cancer, war, and bullying in school has risen in the last decade. death due to illness has risen, children are seeing family members leave them, it affects them when they have to say good-bye to their parents over and over, every time they are called by the military to serve. These types of saddening events that draw these children to feeling defeated. As adults, when we are depress, we tend to do less, stay indoors, or to the extreme, don't even what to get out of bed. .. The children are feeling the same way we do when we're sad. No one feels like exercising or playing with friends. Depressing alone put a pounds on you suddenly. This is not and eating healthier attempt.. This need to addressed on how we can help these children express their feelings better when someone or something causes them hurt. We need to tackle Depression first! Weight loss will follow.

We tend to overcome all of lifes events by moving forward , belonging to family, occupation leads to direction , higher self esteem, it would be what all family members who have passed on would want us to do and become in their absence, whether at war or illness. Imagine a soldier/father recieving a picture of his child involved in activity of sports, a terminally ill parent getting news of their child hitting a home run or scoring a goal in soccer. This can redirect the daily pains and thoughts we all endure. Break thru depression with HOPE !!!!

A completely bad idea. First a segment about bullying then this segment. The little girl in the segment said making the commercial made her feel better about herself - because she was accepted for a commercial, not because of the message.

Of course there is a problem (which I believe is in the U.S. food supply - there is too much high fructose corn syrup in everything) however this ad merely adds fuel to the fire for those that wish to ostracize and ridicule people who are overweight.

The money for this ad would have been better spent providing activities for kids.

The main issue facing our children today is Depressing.. In almost every household in America a family member has or died from some type of Cancer or terminal illness. Or a member of the family is in the military, some homes have both. I remember as a child eating habits were not a concern, yet we did not have a concern in obesity in children. My son eats healthier then I did when I was his age. I was not nor ever over-weight and neither were my peers. and we all ate mostly junk-food. Eating healthier has gotten the attention to parents nowadays.. we all are getting educated on the importance of a "balance diet" and exercise daily. the difference to then and now-- children are experiencing loss of family; whether they had loss a battle to cancer or to the military, or even families seperate due to divorce. There are so many reason for children today to have became severly depressed. We need to stop pointing our fingers at them" telling them to loss weight". This is just another form of bullying. We need to help them by teaching them to learn how to deal with expressing the saddness of loss, hurt or anger when tragedy hits their family. Weight gain in children is cause by depression.. Lets aknowledge that.

If I have to see billboards on the highway telling me that God doesn't want me to have an abortion (a theory/belief) and that homosexuality is a sin (also a belief, not fact) and that the UN is trying to take my guns (a conspiracy theory), why can't we see billboards telling me that excess weight paired with an inactive lifestyle could lead to an early death (a fact)?

I found it interesting that the young lady gained confidence by having the opportunity to be in a commercial being exactly who she is, and not by losing weight. Weight loss doesn't equate to building confidence...acceptance does. Where are the ads that show unhealthy thin people with bone loss?

A lot of people have said that she feels better not because of weight loss but because the people like her and accepted her for the ad. Has anyone thought that these ads show that child obesity is a disease, and lets kids know that they're not being bullied for their personality but for their disease? Therefore, these ads can show kids the facts and actually raise their self-esteem by knowing there is something they can do about being overweight.

Why are these kids so fat in the first place? are they the ones buying their food all the time? i have two girls ages 7 and 11 - and their BMI correlate with their age and height - getting pizza or going to Wendys are treats not a main part of their daily consumption -

Going to step on a lot of persons toes, but i think most kids who are obese in US are due to bad parenting and the usual excuse maybe they have sadness in the family - which family doesnt - mine does...

Fat people say they cannot lose weight for all these lame excuses. They just have no self control and no self respect. It is really sad that we have to look at these bags of flab, its like graffiti on a beautiful landscape. They are making America a laughing stock of the civilized world. People in Japan and China are generally beautiful and trim, so stop with the pathetic excuses. The only reason that fat people exist in America, is because everyone is so PC here, they are afraid of hurting fat people's "feelings". Tough love and truth is the answer, not coddling or accepting them. All the fat people can lose weight easily, by putting them on a fat farm and giving them 3 tiny portions of nutritious food a day, I guarantee that all of them will lose weight and lower the cost everyone's health insurance, and live longer. Stop living in your dream world fatties, and start exercising!!!

Let's cut to the chase... kids, given the choice between foods that make them 'feel' better i.e. carbohydrates, and foods that can be called healthy will opt for 'feel' better. The research is pretty clear on what effects the different categories of food (protein, carbs, & fat) have on the brain and body. If we really want to help our kids get healthy, they need to be informed about these effects and guided toward healthier decisions. Low self-esteem is actually one of the driving causes of obesity. Kids seeking 'comfort' go for 'comfort' foods. Unfortunately, most of those are aiding the downward spiral of negative self-image. Our society is far too able to paint a bleak picture of the future for our kids which, in turn, causes hopelessness, despair and other problems. Perhaps we should focus on how we can all accentuate the good things in our lives instead of the problems.

Stop Immediately. These are kids. I must say there is no lesson from tough love to be learned from reading these mean posts- you are talking about kids in elementary school who most likely love their parents. Be supportive. It took a lot of courage to do what they have done making this video and they don't need to get from the world outside that they have faulty parents to blame.

Hopefully parents are teaching their kids about being truthful. Sometimes the truth hurts and kids need to know that. I do believe the campaign against childhood obesity is targetig the wrong group. Kids do not know about personal hygene, let alone their health, parents do. Parents are the one's that are letting their kids become obese because in most cases the parents themselves are overweight. Kids are just not getting enough exercise. How many kids do you see playing outside or at the park, very few. In the 50s, 60s. and 70s, most parents told their kids to go outside, today, its just not a factor. School lunches, fast foods and trans fats are not what is making our kids obese, its parents and the lack of exercise. Michelle Obama needs to get parents off the couch and on their feet before they can expect children to do the same. Parents need to spend more quality time with their children, except it needs to be outdoors.

Yes. It is a health problem. Yes. These days stay indoors to play, more often than not. I would think that it would be up to the parents and the schools to help the kids to eat and exercise properly. My mother always said that the kids need more P.E. these days and not just playing P.E. games. Parents should continue their kids P.E. daily, after homework and dinner is done. Go out for a family walk around the block a few times. Both dinner time and walking time would make for time for more family bonding.

Don't get me started on school lunches....

Obesity is an epidemic that impairs the ability of millions of Americans to serve in the military, get a good job, or lead a productive life. Not only do we need to emphasize the dangers of obesity, we need strong regulation against food products loaded with sugar, such as cereals, candy, ice cream and fast food rich in carbohydrates.

An active lifestyle is essential, but a good diet is the key to losing weight and keeping it off.

Any more teasing and some kids wouldn’t be fat anymore. They will be dead! For some it could be the last straw before suicide. Fat people know they are fat; they do not need public humiliation on top of it. It’s not helping, just increasing the problem. Some of my classmates told me later that they bullied me to “help me loose weight”. Guess what I lost all this “baby fat” when I moved out on my own and met person who accepted me for who I am. I am not saying my parents are to blame either. They were not prepared to deal with it almost 30 years ago, being thin people themselves. It was catch 22 back then, I couldn’t participate in sports because I was overweight (nobody wanted me on the team) and doctors told that kids shouldn’t be dieting, so I couldn’t loose weight. I still gain weight easily, but I make sure I keep it in check. I do it for myself, not because of the ridiculous ads.

How sad it is to think so many people feel it's their place to judge others.
