In all of my years, and there have been a few, I have never heard of an adult showering with a child over the age of 4 and there not being a problem. No reason for it. What coach or leader would want to subject theirself to their players or subordinates in the nude? I find it hard to believe that it was legal. I spent my high school and college football years showering in sports facilities and it was not uncommon for coaches to shower with the players. Experiencing this commonality was never viewed as out-of-place or inapproriate; I never associated any sexual connotations to it, because there likely weren't any devious intentions; it was normal.

However, I cannot say with any certainty that I had coaches sharing the shower facilities prior to high school, so the bit about Sandusky and a 10 year old sharing the shower facility might seem to cross the line. Although, my experience dates back to the mid-eighties through early-nineties, so keep in mind that Sandusky comes from an earlier generation, and attitudes seem to have changed from my days in locker rooms, gauged by the reactions viewed on many of these posts. So too may my days have changed from Sandusky's era.

Mark, how often did you shower with the coach alone? Was it normal for him to give hugs while you were both naked? Isn't that a bit, well, disgusting???

If Sandusky can get a jury just like Casey did, who didn't give a damn about anything but going home, maybe he can produce the crap "resonable doubt". Criminal defense lawyers often despise their clients and their crimes, but without the guarantee of a legal defense, nothing prevents innocent people from being railroaded for crimes based on nothing but accusations from others. I'm from a Finnish family, the men and boys would often sauna together naked when out at hunting camp (winter shower).... wasn't anything sexual about it.

Sometimes I think people are overly modest and sexualized in today's society that we see pedos around every corner and someone doing something simple like bathing their child in a river is sexualized and inappropriate. It's a kid... it's not supposed to be sexual. Nudity does not equate to sex.

How many alleged victims came up then? I do not know what Mr. Sandusky did or did not do. Yet I am not ready to have him drawn and quartered just yet. There are not many people who are willing for the facts to be presented before making a judgement Mary. I would have to say that showering or bathing with younger children is something that is commonplace here but there are places where the entire family gets into the bath and washes each other all at the same time.

So showering with a youngster by itself is not really all that offensive or even overtly sexual. I can recall as a young lad of 12 or 13 years all the boys in the gym class were made to shower all at the same time while the coach watched and supervised, and even though the coach had a separate shower it was in the same room as everyone else. I never made it into a girls locker room but I would imagine it was not much different.

That was one of the reasons I opted out of taking gym and failed six years in a row, having to pass in summer school to graduate high school for the 1/2 point I missed by failing.

Perhaps everyone did not have the opportunity to hear the interview or read the grand jury's report. Perhaps you are not aware of the numbers of victims that by far exceed what was claimed against Michael Jackson. All of this means something. Yes presumed innocent until proven guilty, but that does not mean we need to be deaf, blind and dumb.

I have gotten into arguments about this case stating I want to know the evidence before I can form an opinon on this case. I have a friend who called the university screaming about it and believes that the football program should be shut down and games taken away from Paterno. You can not convict someone on something he said.

I always thought that if Michael Jackson was really a pedophile, that there would have been dozens of kids that would come forward when he went to trial. You can be certain that the prosecuters interviewed hundreds of kids that visited him at his ranch....yet all they had was this one kid whose mother was a welfare cheat and had tried various scams on others in the past. I'm not a particular fan one way or the other...I just think common sense suggests that if he was pedophile, there woulld have been a lot more victims....much like the Sandusky case...because pedophiles tend to leave a lot of victims in their wake...

In this case, the fact that there are at least two witnesses who were not victims that have come forward...and they have nothing to gain by it...in addition to a number of victims, suggests to me that he is far more likely to be guilty. He started a charity that would provide him with a never-ending stream of vulnerable children, he worked with kids in a capacity that would allow him to shower with them, and at least two people saw him molesting children. It's good to withhold judgment until all the facts are in, of course, but if these things are true (and people are getting fired over it, so people close to the situation obviously believe they are) then the trial itself is going to be a formality.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there weren't legions of people who came forward saying that they SAW Michael Jackson molesting children and covered it up for years. Apples and organges. Also, an irrelevant point. His case was a "he said/she said" and he was acquitted with no evidence to prove that he did anything criminal. Was his behavior odd? Absolutely. He had a multitude of mental disorders, including many years of addiction. So, back off and let him rest in peace!

The coach was fired-that's why his name is off of the trophy. He admitted to having KNOWLEDGE of this abuse and DID NOTHING (or at least not the RIGHT thing). When I was in middle school the mid 1960 there was one shower room for every class , the class was rather small so every grade level from sienor to about the seventh grade would often have gym at the same time. Our coached were usually upperclassmen who were at the time the older kids in school the seventeen eighteen year old. Who by today's standard would an adult. It was not not unusual to have them all showering at the same time. They only drew the line at gender, not age at that time, if there were a woman in the room someone may have raised an eyebrow.

It is also not unusual of athletes to be showering together, and be of different ages, as I said they can have it, but I'd still be more interested in finding out what the facts are rather than what people speculate or imagine happened.

Exactly the point from ..."what Sandusky is accused of".... as of yet he has only been accused no facts have been presented, hence the rush to judgmental statement making is of no productive use in finding out what did or did not go on, and extensive coverage by the press and endless speculation could be counterproductive to any case that the prosecuting attorney for the state may eventually try make.

I would speculate that after the facts have been presented is always a better time to judge what went on than before, at least in my own experience.

No. Please tell me the law he violated. Saying he took a shower with boys is not against the law, it is wrong, but there is no sentence for it. It's stupid, unless taking a shower with a young boy is some sort of code for sex with a boy and that the court can define that as sex abuse. As I said before, most folks are going with emotions and moral (which I also have a problem with because whose morals are you going to go with, and also everyone has different morals). I am not saying don't be outraged, but with the way this case is going, and the fact that folks are all over the news, I have a really bad feeling that there may not be much evidence of this case. It is being worked up as the trial of the century without strong evidence to back it up. In cases like this circumstanial evidence may not be enough. The media is whipping up the masses into another furor like the Casey Anthony case without knowing all of the evidence. I noticed that there was not so much outcry of the Warren Jeffs case in the media because the DA didn't go all over tv talking about I'mma get that sob for child rape. I only saw him on tv after the case where he didn't have a book to sell, he just said I did my job, had the evidence etc. Tonight on Jane Velez Mitchell (which I promptly turned off) she had the DA from the Casey Anthony case selling a book and "revealing" that Casey lied and her lawyer is a sleazy guy. First off, why is it ok for him to write a book, but it's not ok for anyone else to write a book? But I guess we are supposed to like him because he is the prosecution? That case was over charged and there was no evidence imo. Of course, if someone else writes a book it will be a problem.

Once again, this really scares me with the way the media is acting on this case. I truly feel that the prosecution should do their job, not give out to much to the media and stfu. Do your job, go to court, and convict him. If not, they should not go on talk shows and talk about a pending case, because if they lose this, I can see a bunch of lawsuits coming, especially with those who keep slamming Paterno's name, whom these folks keep forgetting was not charged with a crime. The junior high PE teacher I had in the 7th grade was creepy. At the beginning of class, we had to line up and shout out our name and say out loud "rub" if it was the time of the month for us (7th - 9th graders) which she noted on her little clipboard. After class, we were required to shower and she stood right outside of the shower area to "make sure". If she had written "rub" after a girl's name, the girl did not have to take a full shower. She was allowed to keep her PE shorts on but nothing more. She was to wet part of her towel and "rub" her upper body to remove the assumed copious amounts of perspiration 12 year old girls have after playing volleyball or whatever other game we were playing that day. The other girls had to take full showers. Talk about creepy. I can't fathom a school allowing such practices today and several of the girls talked about how our teacher would sometimes put her arm around them as they left the shower area whispering things like, "great game", or "you're really improving" along with a stroke of her hand or a kiss on their forehead.

A lot of the girls tried to switch classes so as to not have this teacher...none of the others behaved as our teacher did. None of the others watched over each of us as we showered or touched us when we came out of the showers.

There were no big child molestation headlines 40 years ago like there are now. Back then, I never would have dreamed that an adult could have sexual feelings for a child. I had never been taught. But adults know what other adults are capable of and it's their moral responsibility to put a stop to it when they know that there's a problem.

My school should never have let our teacher behave in such a manner. I don't know if our teacher went any further with any of my classmates (I wouldn't be surprised) but the signs were all there that there was something off about her. The adults around Sandusky absolutely knew what he was doing and no one took appropriate measures to stop him.

I did read that Sandusky's showers with these boys were "after hours." Which means there was intent of some sort there. You would think as an adult you would know that it is not okay to shower with a child, especially if it is only the two of you.

In his own mind Jerry Sandusky may think that he has done nothing wrong, that he "loved" these boys. He is sick and needs to be locked away for the rest of his pitiful life.

Sandusky didn't just happen to be in the shower with young children. He brought the young boy(s) into the showers when there was no one else in the locker room.

Just wanted to correct something that you said. Molestation is NEVER about homosexuality. EVER. It is about power and control. And the vast majority of pedophiles identify themselves as heterosexual no matter what gender their victims are. Molestation isn't about sex, it's about abuse.

Is there an underlying sexual desire there-absolutely-but a healthy person will find sexual gratification from healthy means (assuming that watching porn & masturbating are healthy). However, those with sexual disorders and other mental disorders find their sexual gratification from unhealthy or disordered means, and within that is the issue of control. Typically an abuser has been abused (and has lost control of their body/mind at some point), so they find that control by abusing others. in that case, it is a cycle. However some people are just born psychopaths and they have no concern about consequences or other people; they can become abusers, too. And gender preference doesn't really play a very big role at all in pedophilia. Knowledge and education trump your "logic".

Why is it that PE teachers don't shower with their students then? Is it perhaps because to have a young student see their own coach or teacher naked would be totally inappropriate? HMMM At one time I was building a home for my family. We lived in the house once it was closed it, and proceeded to finish it as we could. We had no inside plumbing, so we joined the Y and showered there. The showers were open and my 10 year old son and I showered with people (males, of course) of all ages. I didn't think anything of it and I don't think anyone else did, either. I can't speak for all the other men there, but I'm pretty well convinced that I had no sexual desires for either my son or any other of the folks there.

So, to answere the question as to how many folks shower with young children, I would guress that there are many. Depends on the situation. In a sports setting, it might sometimes become awkward NOT for coaches and players to shower together. But I would agree that WHEN POSSIBLE coaches should shower separately, especially when the players are young children.

Did you let men close enough to you and your son to TOUCH either of you? Of course not. If Sandusky was going to shower with boys, he could have done so with 20, 30 or so other boys and men around. People probably never would have thought anything of it. However, one lone young boy and an adult male? Not the wisest choice for Sandusky. But then again, who will believe an 8 year old boy, right?

The devil is in the details. A group of men and boys showering together could be completely innocent, but that's not the case here.

I have showered at the "Y" as a kid & as an adult. I have showered in boy scout camps, sports programs, college showers, tennis camps, golf showers, logging camps, copper smelter shower after work, ski resorts, ad infinitum. I have spent well over 60 years in mens showers. I know about snapping towels, about sliding on your butt, about picking up soap jokes, about who can let wind the loudest. I am 6' - 2" over 200 lbs and can handle almost any man at the bar. I can fool around in the shower as good as the next guy.

I have read the 23 pages and that is enough for me. To have a kid in a college or adult shower consistantly is weird. This guy Sandustky had a reputation. He was a known problem. Anyone & everyone had to have known about him. Joe knew also, ... he had to. Joe knew. That consistent behavior in the shower does not go unnoticed. Joe was asleep at the wheel. If Joe had retired at age 70, or at age 75, we would not be here with this mess. All this was happening during Joe's watch. This was happening under Joe's nose.

Costas asked the right questions, indeed, and yes, everything Sandusky said can and will be used against him at trial (admissions by a party are an exception to the hearsay rule). Why his lawyer let him do the interview is UNBELIEVABLE and malpractice in my opinion. You NEVER EVER let your client say anything public with a criminal prosecution like this pending. His client just convicted himself with such meandering and equivocal answers. If he really was innocent, you would have heard outrage, adamant denials, and unequivocal insistence upon his innocence. Yet nothing he said even remotely came close to that. There is no way this case will ever go to trial. Most likely, Sandusky will kill himself or plea bargain to a deal that puts him away for the rest of his life, which in prison will be a very short one.

I completely agree, David. The prosecutors will show this interview to the jury, if there ever is a trial, and it will become apparent that not even Sandusky believes in his claim of innocence.

But I'm betting Sandusky will kill himself first. I have no doubt there are other victims and witnesses out there and at some point he will realize that he is not going to get away with his crimes.

I too was wondering about WHY any attorney would let their client give an interview about the crimes (how many counts now, 40?) they have "allegedly" committed. Hearing Sandusky's voice seriously creeped me out, and you could tell Costas was a bit unnerved as well. Sandusky just seemed detached and meandering, as if he honestly cannot understand what the big deal is -- he seemed confused as to why anyone would find his "lack of judgement" a crime, or even do more than say, "oh, you know -- that's just Jerry..."

True, the attorney is doing what defense attorneys are supposed to do by even taking the case, but it seems like this move made the noose out of the rope Sandusky himself has supplied in mass quantities.

As for the assistant coach, he has perjured himself because the grand jury testimony (which will be used at trial) contradicts what he is now putting in writing to colleagues and friends via email proclaiming his "stopping it" when he saw the boy and the coach in '02. What was he stopping? The Horsing around? The towel snapping?

All of those who have been complicit at Penn or at Second Mile did it because they didn't want to upset a very lucrative apple cart. $50 mil a year in revenue buys a lot of silence; I just hope that the investigators cover every possible base, and that the D.A.s get it right. Juries can only convict if they are given the tools to do so. My prayers are with those poor kids.

Showering with kids makes him stupid. It is NOT the same thing as being guilty of sexual abuse. I think the court of public opinion has made certain that his life is over. The court of law has to find him guilty of the crimes with which he was charged. Do I think he will eventually be found guilty, yes probably. But if you don't mind I think, in terms of preserving our democracy, we should hold off on the lynching until that little technicality of a trial is actually completed.
