In the U.S. Time is honoring a group of deadbeats and anarchist. A group that has increased unemployment, forced small businesses to close, violated the rights of others for their let to be decided cause and a large number of this group who believes that those that work owe them a living. NO I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE CHOICE TIME MAGAZINE MADE - BUT THAT IS THEIR RIGHT SINCE IT IS THEIR MAGAZINE.
the tea party had a bigger impact...really. Sure they strummed up some support, made themselves look like bigots, etc...but in the end...they have done nothing but hurt the GOP and the country. They really haven't made a positive impact on anything...now Time did put Hitler as person of the yr, so I suppose if you put them in the negative impact category it may just work out for ya!
Of course, why not, ? they are scking up to the jihadist's. All that protesting over in the Middle East has actually done, Is to put the Muslim brotherhood into power. You ignorant idiots.......wait till they do the same thing here. It will, because you bleeding heart dummies are going to let it happen. First they take your guns, so they can control you, just like they did in Europe. Then the rest of their agenda will fall into place. Wake up already. Grow a brain or a pair and just step into reality already, stupid !
@degray1: doesn't the weight of all that tin foil on your head make your neck hurt? If that's all you believe the protesting in the Middle East has done, I suggest you turn off Fox News and tune in to something else...anything else would be better than Fox. I bet you believe Obama's going to take all your guns too, right?
iggy75, you are a very ignorant person, and true to your liberal party. You only know how to be-little and call names grow up and investigate, just a little bit and show us just how intelligent you really are ! Name callers are not needed and when all those Muslims are finally here and protesting in your back yard, well I guess you'll just have to finally see the light.
degray1: iggy75's right, expand your information base past Fox News and maybe you'll begin to understand the Islam religion as a whole compared to its fringe elements. Remember, the Muslim fringe bombs centers of American capitalism which it finds evil. Your fringe bombs abortion clinics. Wake up.
So I'm guessing this term will be Time's Political Nonsense Thought-Terminating Cliche Pavlovian Response for the Low-Information Masses Meme of the Year?
Bwhaaahaaaahaaaa! This is the SAME Time Magazine that failed to report on the Tea Party protests at all in their year in review! That meant nothing at all. Now they are lauding the "protesters" around the world. That is sooo rich!
How about we name those protesters of "value" to time: Hammas, The Muslim Brotherhood, Occupy Wall Street (OWS), insert Union Organization name here, etc.
Does time include the dead protesters in Syria? The Coptic Christians that protested, but are now being run out of the Middle East? The women protesters whom are now being run underground as they are back to little value?
Well, Time is entitled to have it's opinion and print it. Mind you that sometimes their "Man of the Year" didn't end up meaning a good thing. There was Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, Jimmy Carter, Deng Xiaoping, Ayatollah Khomeini, Vladimir Putin, and Ben Bernake. None of those examples turned out to be good guys. Maybe in a few years we'll realize that the "protesters" actually were radicals whom used a good "crisis" to get what they wanted and made the world a worse place.
It's been reported that Obama is going to name one of the public restrooms at the White House after him. The George W. Bush legacy toilet....
That's why he has failed to produce jobs for the public. He focused his time on meaningless things and pointing his finger just like the OWS protesters do playing the blame game.
Shuklack- The Tea Party (as I understand them to be) are people whom believe that the states are where most of the responsiblities lie for governance and that a smaller federal government is better. THe other part was fiscal responsibilty within the federal government (which we obviously don't have in DC).
If you want to get slighting, I guess by your broad brushing standards the OWS movement would be a DNC rally for additional dependency on large government for all of your needs. Or am I missing something?
If you want to get slighting, I guess by your broad brushing standards the OWS movement would be a DNC rally for additional dependency on large government for all of your needs. Or am I missing something?
I don't see DNC politicians headlining OWS protests.
I guess in your world corporate achievement and personal wealth ranks waaay above people who live under dictatorships till finally, one sets fire to himself in the middle of a town square in exasperation a launches his country into overthrowing their US funded and supported regime. But your right....Inventing an ipad to make billions is a way more significant contribution to the world.
"Time" is such a rag...no surprise a jihadist protester is on it's cover....how many are reading "Time" in the Arab world, anyway?
I would have put my bet on Pippa or Gaga or The Kardashians or some other twit...maybe 'Newsweek' will pick one of them...it's a bigger rag than "Time".
If the Occupiers were protesting big government, then why aren't they protesting the fed buildings and the White House? Why are they attacking big business? If any one of them were offered a job right now, today, on Wall Street, you know darn well they'd take it.
You are misinformed with the reason they are there. In fact, they can't even stick to one agenda. They want you, (the 1%'ers) and the middle class (while it still exists) to pay for them to have the same things you have, without having put forth the effort to earn it. Their plan is to take away all of our rights to our share of the American dream. No one should be applauding them, supporting them, or encouraging them.
Yes, they should be listed to, and I think they were in the beginning, but now that their platform is all over the place, it's hard to even know what they stand for, just that they are angry.
So, in my opinion, Time Magazine is pandering to a group of people that caused the most noise and friction this last year, and not on one person that did the most good for humanity. The only mark these occupiers are going to leave on humanity will be carried away on a barge to a landfill. After someone else cleans it up.
No Krissy... they want the $$ out of politics.. Your legislators are bought and paid for by lobbyists...I want my vote to count, don't you? Because right now neither of our votes count, not really... the government doesn't answer to the people anymore, it answers to corporations and lobbyists and I am personally sick of it!
Time Magazine forgot that there is a difference between a Protester in the US, and the Revolutionaries of the Middle East/N. Africa.
Gees, they are stupid---The Revolutionaries are a suppressed people, who include many Terrorist groups themselves, overturning their own Governments/Countries willing to die for the Cause---asking for Freedom as in Iran. Slaughter houses.
The Protesters in America are just plain bums, who are looking for a free meal. OWS?---yes, indeed, it sure did change Wall Street, and the Ports in America.
Is getting arrested, vandalism, fighting the police, descrating parks, personal property, and going to jail is something to be proud of in the US---
I thought the OWS had their Freedoms--Time Mag., what is it? All the OWS/bums did was voice an opinion---cowards.
They should not have all been lumped together in the same Protester Groups. The man on the cover doesn't want his face to be seen, and the OWS are all over the Media, wanting direct attention upon themselves with no mask protecting themselves.
So now they have a new item on their agenda? They why aren't they picketing DC? The only stuff I've heard coming out of their mouths is how much money the banks are making and where is "my fair share?" If this is directed at politicians, they are doing a great job at hiding it. Or maybe their agenda keeps adding bullet points?
Sorry, peaches and cream, I don't buy your statement. At least not 100%. Maybe only 99%. ha ha
OWS is not protesting near the White House because they do not want to involve their presidential re-election candidate in their protest. Although Mr. Obama has been quiet on the messy OWS protests since his initial statement you can bet your bottom dollar that his campaign staff is already working on when best to jump on the OWS bandwagon and lay claim to those votes.
Even most people who've defended OWS on this site make it pretty clear where their votes will go in November...and it really does not matter how many campaign dollars Mr. Obama receives from those evil, "not paying their fair share" corporate jet owners...despite all the bleating about unfair this nation is.
Shuklack- I guess you missed MSNBC's coverage of the OWS protesters being called "the best Americans" by the DNC and the President endorsing the 99%. John Lewis was there in NYC- BTW. Ok, maybe most DC'ers might not want to show up, per se, but they sure like to say nice things about OWS.
Steve Jobs didn't do anything great this year. Nothing any greater than any previous years anyway. Why are so many people upset that it wasn't him?????
Unless you hate him so much that you think the greatest thing he did was die, that is the only way it would make sense.
Unbelievable,You would honor a group of scumbags rather then SEAL TEAM 6 and thier leader President Bush for taking out obl, oh ya obama said go ahead from the golf course,so who wouldnt.
The low information beckians fauxer bagged and tagged repubcondinos are out in force tonight.... spewing forth their brand of vacuuousity which seem to be par for the coarser, coarsest, corsetted, static debrained course. LOL
Krissy and Tony..... there are Occupy protestors protesting in Washington DC.
The only reason that you may not have heard about them via the main stream and beltway media is because the mainstream/beltway media do not seem to report on these protest unless there is some police initiated melee happening or have happened and even then they seem to not want to report on the protests going on in the various states or abroad/overseas.....
The last time the msm/beltway media reported on the DC protestors was when the police dismantelled a structure that was built in a park there. I think that was last week.....
Come to think of it the msm/beltway media did not cover the marching/protesting that was done by various group, church, civil rights including the Occupy/99%er protestors etc if I am not mistaken. I think that march took place in NY again if I am not mistaken.
So, try to do some research first before spewing forth vitriol.....
Nuance, nuance nuance or the absense thereof.... LOL
Gee thanks for clearing that up for me...I just hadn't heard about the OWS protesters and so greatful you let me in on the secret...despite the fact there is at least one story about them on this MSN site every day of the week and about every other day on thr TV news and in one of my two daily newspapers.
I simply referenced the "Time" cover...which shows a protester with a scarf covering part of his face...which is not the costume of the one thousand or more protesters that have been seen on screen or in print.
Try not to be so brilliantly informative, Mr. Nuance. And go spew yourself.
The Faux lovers are out tonight, they just hate it when its not one of their own on the cover, oh wait capitalist Paul Ryan made, but don't worry, the people of WI will never vote for him again, his career in WI will be over, just like our lying Governor Walker, by the way we passed our recall signatures needed and then some, and were not done, we are going for over a million and we will get them, and then we will recall that liar, and give WI back to the people.
Tony... why don't you do some research or try to view other sources of information like for example... Countdown with Keith Olbermann or even the Young Turks etc on Current TV amoung other sources?
How about little things like occupying Congressional offices etc requesting to speak to one's representatives, or protesting at the offices of lobbiests or at the gala awards/performances, the banks etc.... including outside of the White House?
The fact that these protestors were not armed to the teeth to pretend to have courage of their questionable convictions like the baggers/fringers did, may have been why these protests do not get the attention of the seemingly bought and paid for main stream/beltway media, who seem to have forgotten how to do investigative unbiased research and reporting, and seem to be able to only cover blood shed, carnage, and those sort of things.
We heard more explainations about Bloggo and his machinations, what he did, said, meant, wanted, got, sought, than we have heard about the machinations of the graping of the masses by the financial folks and their cohorts that lead to the ruin of so many American lives and their dreams that have now become nightmares.
Do they report about the Republican Congress slowdown or the fact that since these folks are now the majority in the house of representitives they only work 2 weeks per month? Have the media enquired why this is so?
Has there been any further reporting on the natural disaster that affected so many states and how FEMA is coping/doing and about the funding for same is going or the progress made regarding clean up and rebuilding?
How about other issues like the new law that was recently passed where American citizens in the USA can be arrested in the USA and locked up in USA military facilities with out due process.... and can conceivably remain locked up forever without charges or a trial from the sound of things?
These msm/beltway media folks are doing about as good investigating and reporting of issues that affect us all like the continued erosion of our civil rights under the constitution as they did prior/leading up to the first boot being set upon Iraqi soil.. These folks are doing as much unbiased investigation and reporting as was done pre Iraq /Afghanistan etc.... How much did they verify regarding the administration's assertions/reasons for the necessity of going to war?
How come they did not address the issue of the financing of these wars or about the cost of these wars being off the books..i.e. the cost not added into the national budget and the possible financial outcome of doing so?
How about actually doing unbiased, well researched reporting on healthcare in America? Like the cost of the present system versus having a public not for profit healthcare plan?
How about unbiased investigating and reporting on the housing bubble, the financial meltdown and where we are now. Like what happened to those toxic home loans etc that the tax payers paid for and took off the banks books? Perhaps they could have explained why the banks are still forclosing on taxpayers when they do not seem to own those notes in the first place etc from the look of things. Oh there was a piece on the govt finding regarding the housing bubble and the causes of same recently.... well good for them.
Mind you it is sort of difficult to explain these issues using the old 2 and 3 minute format and to still make sense... so it was in print.... as if these tired wornout stressed out living from hand to mouth masses have the time to read these pieces.......
Regarding the Time magazine piece...... why are people pretending they even used to read this magazine in the first place? If the picture was not shown on the TV or on the internet many would not have known anything about it enough to make a comment in the first place.... LOL
It would have been better if there had been a composite picture making up a face instead of the face being half covered imo. That is why so many people are riled up about it, as it is suggestive of only one group of people protesting as opposed to the mirad of races, ethnicities, etc protesting from the look of things....
Agreed. I stopped reading Time Magazine 4 years ago. Person of the year...the protester. And please do tell us Time magazine what the hell the protester has done to make anyones life here in the USA one bit better? Time magazine=Epic fail
The OWS movement would not have us bow down to a 'businessman'. This continual glorification of the almighty dollar being the end-all reason for being has to end. As a country we are only as good as how we treat the least fortunate among us. It's not about a free ride but a fair ride, the same opportunities, and the end to wasting taxpayer money going to support the best-off among us.
Poverty is at an all-time high of 46 million in America, yet we still see record profits and CEO pay in this dire economy. The OWS movement wants to end taxpayer support going to those businesses and the wealthy who have little concern for the plight of the American people. Our best economic interests lie in supporting the middle and low income classes, not the 1% at the top. Its time for the 1% to provide a little payback for all the support they have been given toward their success.
Actually the continual glorification of Socialism and Communism as an alternative to the way it is done in America has to end. No system has created more wealth for more people in the history of planet earth than the one used in the United States.
You guys are missing the point. First Time can choose whoever the hell they want on the cover. But if you read the article or researched the past recipients it isn't always one specific person but can be a group or thing. It is also not always a good person/thing either. Hitler was on the cover, don't think he did much good. Simply put they are just trying to place what they thought was the most influential person(s) or thing of the year. And protester is a good choice - which is not just relegated to the OWS. Now I agree there are some on the list that would have been good choices, like Steve Jobs (but his achievements are over many years not just one) and others that I would question why they even bother. Again just because you don't like it doesn't mean that person or thing didn't have a large influence on culture and society in that year, whether that is good bad or indifferent.
Like I said good or bad - and yes we are beginning to see where the chips are falling in the mideast after the arab spring - so far not looking to great but its also not a major surprise.
This may be a "boring" subject to pick (go, Time Magazine, for not picking one of the more popular nominees available), but it warmed my heart to see The Protester on the cover of Time. Yay! The little guy sure deserves to be the big guy in these days.
Person of the year...the protester. And please do tell us Time magazine what the hell the protester has done to make anyones life here in the USA one bit better?
Believe it or not, but the world is bigger than the United States of America.
In the poll on this site ...4% said "Princess Kate" should have won the title.
That's how far this nation has fallen...yeah...a young girl nobody had heard of before marries a member of an English royal family that does nothing but wear goofy hats...and that's who should be Time's "Person of the Year".
Can Pippa, Gaga, Jennifer Aniston, and Justin Bieber make the top ten ???
Steve Jobs created more of an impact than any of these so called protesters- putting the OWS crowd in w/the citizens protesting a dictator is very lame and shows the magazine must be run by 12 yr olds- out of touch w/reality- next time you are on your I-phone or Mac thank a protester- you are giving OWS undue recognition proofing ratiocination retrograding is alive and well.
Valid point. But the Person of this article is not just the OWS Protester. The article is about a movement and a cultural climate whose actions are escalating globally and impacting nations throughout the world.
Agreed!!! Time either leans left or like today takes the road of least resistance - sort of - they just can't face reality so I don't read them unless I'm in a doctor's office and have a choice between it and Highlights
Was waiting for the iFans to show up mentioning their deity.
"He took my money in a way that I couldn't resist." Oooooooh Steve
So I guess the governments toppled by the Arab Spring and the worldwide awareness of how corrupt governments are exemplified by the OWS movement don't compare to the shinyness of the iPhone. Gotcha.
I didn't know of Steve Jobs was until it was announced he had cancer and even then, was unaware what/who he was. He wasn't that important to my world. To the protesters, though, I could relate.
That's an awful thing to say. I didn't like his business practices, but you really need to take a good look at yourself when you make crass statements like that.
It is not just the OWS protesters that are the TIME Persons of the Year! It is protestors in general, from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, OWS, Russia, and the list goes on. I agree, without protestors, many of these country changing movements would have died out with a wimper. Most of these changes are positive, even though you seem to disparage the OWS protestors. they are forcing change on the US of A that would not have happened without them.
Steve Jobs did put out some amazing technological products.
They've worked really well for internet child predators, internet scam artists, Craigslist muderers, computer stalkers, credit card thieves, and computer virus spreaders. Oh...and that new law they want to make it illegal to drive while texting or phoning because of all the traffic deaths...yup...technology was a big help in causing those accidents.
And did I mention all the jobs that have been lost or the retail businesses that have closed from losing business to internet sales...which for the most part are sales-tax free, causing national retail sales taxes to decline, so other taxes had to be raised.
Yes ...Steve Jobs should have been Time's 'Person of the Year' !!!
AirThief, you took the words out of my mouth. Although I would vote for Jobs over some of these other choices - Kate Middleton, Kim Kardashian or (horrors) Michelle Obama?!?!? What the people who thought they had more of an impact than anyone else did are smoking I don't want to know!
The Arab spring will be in history books. OWS might be in history books. Kate Middleton probably won't be in history books, much less Michelle Obama. And Kim Kardashian won't even be remembered by anyone five years from now.
The way things are heading, "Time" magazine might not be around five years from now either...and it's actually a better magazine than "Newsweek"...which isn't saying much.
'US News & World Report' was very good ...but in this nation it simply could not survive due to the absolute lack of articles on folks like the people you mentioned...but they were still around and did print an article about the Mrs. Obama, it likely wouldn't have the catchy and useless title like "The Fashionable Looks of Michelle Obama"...a staple of this 'MSN" website...now running "The Fashionable Looks of Pippa".
Many Americans eat this crap up...and they vote too !
Jobs treated the people who actually manufacture Apple products like serfs and hoarded his $8.3 billion fortune to no apparent purpose. At Foxconn, where Apple products are made thirty-four-hour shifts, beatings, child labor, an epidemic of suicides and a general prison-camp atmosphere prevailed, and even yawning could get your (meager) pay docked. Why he seemed so stingy with his fortune—(he did away with all the company’s charity programs) is anyone's guess. Jobs instructed Obama that the United States had to behave more like China in the manner in which it encouraged corporations to act free of regulations or concern for their employees and their environment. Certainly NOT Person of the Year!
From the number of stupid and mean spirited comments on this blog, I'd say it's mostly conservatives reading it, who have not interest in maintaining the Constitution or Bill of Rights as long as their little lives are complete and happy.
Time, Newsweek, NYT, Wash Post, TPM, Politico, FOX.. yep all just slanted media that only cares about themselves and their ratings. Teaching everyone to only care about themselves too.
I have to agree that this is a poor choice. Perhaps they could one day focus on some one who has made a real contribution instead of the parasites of politics and the unemployed, uninspired, noise makers.
Why are these parasites (as you describe them) unemployed, uninspired and making noise on a political level? Because they are now paying attention to the corrupt system that has evolved in the last 20 years. They represent us all, well not you of course, your doing well in this America. How ironic that the Protester was a hero when they were in the middle east, but a parasite when Protest are held here.
I'm doing well in America too. so they don't represent me either. But then I worked hard for the past 19 1/2 years starting out with $15,000/year. Working hours I didn't get paid for (salaried) because I was dedicated to doing a good job and not dedicated to simply getting more for myself.
Jumpmaster You can't possibly be comparing people fighting for their freedom from dictator's and people smoking dope in their tents protesting about who know's what? They could'nt even tell you what their protest was about. Come on seriously?
Jumpmaster - there is a world of difference between the OWS and the Rebels of Egypy,Libya and Syria. While I don't agree with the Rebels, they were and continue to give their lives for what they perceive to be a better tomorrow only to be hijacked by Islamic Terrorist. The OWs are just a bunch of law breaking deadbeats who believe they are "owed" a living and should get whatever they need or want without working for themselves. The OWS is a "scourge" that needs removed from the landscape. The OWS are comprised of deadbeats, anarchist the American Socialist & Communist Parties, ACORN and Labor Unions (Organized Crime). The OWS needs cleaned-up with fire hoses, put on clean clothes, get rid of the drugs and have the STD's Treated, arrested, made to pay for their damages to Public & Private Properties and made to do an "honest days work".
Joe, the OWS folks are risking arrest and assault by police on a regular basis despite the fact they are mostly peaceful and non resisting. AND they are protesting for others -- many have jobs Joe, as I have discovered. They took care of the homeless while camped in Boston. They are an ASSET to our society. That vet who got his skull fractured wasn't doing anything at ALL but standing around supporting free speach. If you haven't noticed, peaceful protestors are supposed to be a part of American civic life, and seeing riot gear clad cops busting their heads and spraying them with pepper spray is chilling indeed. Reminds me of the bonus army in Grant's time. Will we now just spray protesting civilians with gunfire? Don't be surprised. You can now be imprisoned without a trial if the security agencies think you might be a threat. Let's hope you never have an opinion that differs from the mainstream because you won't be able to express it.
I believe this was a well thought out choice. Protesters throughout the world are having an impact and it's time to acknowledge that.
Also, the OWS crowd is what patriotism is all about. Making a stand for what you believe in so that we may create a better country is why this nation exists. Some of the protesters may not have jobs, that shouldn't come as a surprise with our 9% unemployment rates. But a lot of them do and most of them are highly-educated, hard-working assets to our communities. We should thank them for having the strength to stand up to the exorbitant income inequalities plaguing this country. A strong middle class makes a strong nation. We need to get our middle class back and the OWS people are igniting that movement.
Jumpmaster You can't possibly be comparing people fighting for their freedom from dictator's and people smoking dope in their tents protesting about who know's what? They could'nt even tell you what their protest was about. Come on seriously?
#8.3 - Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:07 AM EST
Rob, you're so misinformed and blindsided!
As you sit comfortably in your easy chair, sipping booze, these protesters are fighting for are freedoms, slowly being diminished!
FACT: Marijuana doesn't kill brain cells, cause cancer or drives people to kill.
Perhaps one day you will focus on your ability to think critically and stop repeating talking points dictated to you by the media. Nothing worthwhile has been embraced by the establishment at its debut. Transformational ideas have often opposed ideologically and violently, ridiculed and then eventually accepted. Part of the legitimacy of the OWS movement comes from the fear and anger it incites in the establishments' hearts, and you mindlessly repeat their fear soaked message.
Sue: The OWS people are PLANNING and ORCHESTRATING their arrests....posting themselves wherever the cameras are and provoking the police, so they can perform, look like they're being abused by police. The OWS literally draw up a grid of where and who will be the "victim".
Network media...not FOX. Sorry to disappoint. Can you at least be original? Blaming FOX for everything you don't like is really overdone. It is what it is.
"He was the great scholar of the Depression who saw another depression coming, and did everything he could to stop it," said Time's managing editor, Richard Stengel.
Yeah, after being one of the orchestrators of the 21st century depression!!!!
This was 2009's Ben Bernenke--if this isn't a crock of sh!t, I don't know what sh!t is!!!!!
He's one of the main players in the downfall of the American and world's economy and standard of living for middle class americans
Talk abt creating a problem so you can come up with a supposed solution
O'Bama's policies and Lack of Leadership Skills alone are the cause of the destruction of the U.S. Economy, failure to secure our Borders so the U.S. can be invaded from Mexico and the overall destruction of the U.S. Middle Class. He is the so-called Leader, if it happens on his watch he is responsible. O'Bama to this day and time still takes absolutely no responsibility for his actions and the results.
"O'Bama's policies and Lack of Leadership Skills alone are the cause of the destruction of the U.S. Economy, failure to secure our Borders so the U.S. can be invaded from Mexico and the overall destruction of the U.S. Middle Class."
Right. He orchestrated the housing bust beginning in 2006, caused the market crash in 2008, and... oh, wait, he WASN'T president then. And you're aware that illegal immigration is down and deportations are up from the last administration, right?

Of course Zero wasn't president on 2006, he was a member of the democrat controlled Senate. As far as the housing bust is concerned, it was NOT the previous administration who orchestrated the bust. It was the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, led by the SECOND to the worst president of all time, none other than James E. Carter, that destined housing to collapse.

So it took 30 years for this crisis to develop?? Do you even hear yourself?
Attempts at deflecting the argument towards their unintelligent slights at our point of view, or our character, all in the interest of shining the spotlight anywhere but their faulty logic. That's a libby for ya.
Time Magazine has LOST MY BUSINESS. The cover looks more like a terrorist than a protestor.
Time is a group of idiots. Michelle Obama? Are you kidding me? She has done nothing. Just like her husband.
Seems they have poor selection skills in my opinion. What about Sheriff Arpaio? This one man has tried so hard to clear out the illegals in his county and gets zero support from our federal government.
I don't pretend to know all the worthy people in our country or our world, BUT, I know the ridiculous when I read it. Be it past selections or present. Stupid!
Hey Time, it is Time for you to go...................
because their owner is part of the elitist that creates all these problems for the world, that's why they come up with all this BS and call it "persons of the year". Time is one of the mags that David Rockefeller named in his speech, thanking them for their promise of secrecy while being present at their "secret" meetings on their "plans for the world"
I think that many of you are missing the point. "Person of the Year" is not necessarily an accolade. It is chosen to represent someone or something that has had the most historical/social/political/etc influence over the past year. The other people/groups considered have each had some sort of significant influence over a particular area of our collective attention. Some are "worthy" and some are not. Perhaps the positive-sounding moniker of "Person of the Year" should be changed to better reflect the scope of choices, such as "Time Person of Influence for 2011."
1st-the person on the cover looks like they are Muslim-not like they are a terrorist. (there IS a difference.)
2nd-the protests are not just about OWS, they are about Arab Spring as well which has made a huge impact this year. This may also include the tea party as they are protestors.
3rd-the award is not, and has never been, about who made the most positive impact. Hitler was named once as he was the one who had the biggest impact that year.
Uh....maybe that's because the Teabaggers have been a complete disaster to the US. Singlehandedly responsible for the lowest Congressional approval rating in history; singlehandedly responsible for the US getting their credit rating downgraded; for bringing Congress to a dysfunctional stop. Tea Party my arse. They're dying, and I, for one, can't wait for the day they're dead.
Jessicalc: The teaparty was instrumental in igniting the budget fights (by encouraging obstinate refusals on the right to compromise) that led to the uncertainty over the US paying its debts which led to the downgrade. So, although not singlehandedly, they were perhaps the largest factor contributing to the downgrade. That's an undeniable fact.
It's no wonder the tea party is dying. Their hard-headed actions led to the US credit rating's downgrade. That's not a good outcome.
The problem is that conservatives, as a whole, tend to be less intelligent than liberals. This lower level of intelligence causes them to believe everything Fox News tells them. And then, when their belief systems are challenged by facts, they become upset and ignore the facts that could help them better understand the world. It's sad.
Your such a funny person, really ! I'm happy for you that you think your so intelligent......really. You are really good advertisement for why, you should check out Fox news once in a while.......StateAtty. Gees ,I hope your not a real attorney.
StateAtty - Less Intelligent than liberals??? Really???? Just because there is a difference in opinion does not mean there is a lack of intelligence. Some of the most intelligent people I know are conservatives. For instance my husband is a very successful, intelligent chemist. The fact that you have made that assumption really just makes you look like the less informed, uneducated person.
says the person who has Eyore as their picture.... It's hard NOT to laugh at the way you criticize everything, offer no solutions, and yes it is the tea party's fault our credit rating went down, because they refused to vote! You got your seats in congress and then do NOTHING??? typical whining, do nothing and still whining conservatives.... and BTW how sad that you feel the need to speak of your husband's intelligence and not your own....
"And here I thought credit ratings had to due with people not paying on the credit they were using... silly me..."
Well, in part. But there's also that part about the RISK of not paying on the credit being used. And the intransigence of the officials elected by the Tea Party who refused to compromise to preserve our credit rating INCREASED the risk of default dramatically.
peaches and cream - who cares what I have as my picture! Eeyore reminds me of my childhood when times were much simpler when I believed there was good in every person.
If you would like me to rattle off my credentials I would be happy to do that too, but you really wouldn't care would you? BTW, republicans can't do anything when they are blocked at every turn by the Obama administration and the Democrats in the Senate! So here is my SOLUTION... vote republican in the next election! There ya go!
I do agree with you. If anyone states an opinion I disagree with, I also vow instant retribution lasting a lifetime. I assume you also reasonably stamp your feet, put your fingers in your ears, and soil your diaper, as I do. It's the mature thing to do; I learned it from my grandfather. Hope your Alzheimer's gets better, grandpappy!
Stoopid, why are you on here? Is it your goal to make everyone reading all of your comments to be dumber at the end of the day because they read your drivel?
oh great, I have my own personal stalker. sciencetech, why are you seeking out all of my comments and reading them? actually, i feel kind of flattered.
No this is not the change we want or hope for, you daft. The change I want is who's in the white house, and in our country's spending habits. That's it. I could care less about terrorist "protesters" and free loading hippies.
Yes, but choose your battles, wisely ! Not haphazardly.....the Muslim brotherhood is not the way to go. Do you want it here ? I don't. Where would be your freedom then ?
@thelastbrainalive: yeah, we want a change in the US spending habits too....such as, we don't want any more republican disasters in the White House that take us into unfunded wars based on lies. And to those of you who think the protesters at Occupy are a bunch of losers.....while you sit in your recliners with your remote in one hand, and a beer in the other....you can thank them later when they've brought about massive change to the system that has wrought massive income inequality on the US. You may sit there and think you're doing ok right now, but what you don't realize is how much better you could be if you hadn't been screwed by the upper 1 pct for the last 3 decades. But that's ok, sit tight while we fight your fight.
iggie75. Oh yes, the voice of reason, again. Disasters ? As apposed to what ? You mean the Democratic disaster we have going on now ? You sit tight. Help is on it's way. We'll fix your Democratic Party (Progressive liberal) train wreck.
Not a very dramatic choice. But not unreasonable. If you count all of news coverage of the arab and middle eastern protesters, as well as the occupy movement, "the protester" story has ubiquitous during the past year.
...If you count only the past two months, then given the coverage of Penn State, Jerry Sandusky, and Syracuse, I guess you'd have to pick "the molester" over "the protestor" as the story of the year.
I agree with wats-1..."the cover looks more like a terrorist than a protestor." The protestor? What a joke! Can't tell you the last time I read Time magazine.
All of you comments suck. Your just putting out your crappy ideas and attacking people and institutions you disagree with. No one reads Time because its still in print. Obama would have been the choice, if you didnt want to think about it. The protester choice is kinda corny, but protest around the world have changed things from Libya to Tea party to Occupy. No matter who you are, people will remember the cops spraying those kids in the face at point blank range.
Yes, I agree that I will remember that image for a long time (but never in the way you hope) - as well as the stories and images of these Occupy POS protestors and the damage and absolute lack of respect for others they have shown. Yep, I am really impressed by what they have done - - - NOT!
Yeah of course I'll remember it DR! I have it framed in my house with a "de-motivational" YOU GOT OWNED underneath it.
bunch a' PC liberal wacko's. Life isn't gooey drops and gum-gum rainbows like what your idea logic professors tell you it should be. Grow up and stop complaining about how life hasn't been fair to you or others
I add my name to the list of citizens who have not read this magazine "for a long TIME" and am now reminded why I made a good choice to not waste my TIME reading it! I'm getting a headache just thinking of the fact I actually have now wasted and lost some TIME in my life I can never make up with reading this story about that magazine. Hopefully, it won't be long before this magazine is just a memory when they have too few subscribers to keep publishing "junk" and making Person of the Year picks like this one.....
Time Magazine, what a joke. It is irresponsible on their part to promote anarchy through their selection of the Protester. No wonder we have so many problems in the world today.
This is fantastic! Human rights all over the world is what this is all about, not the greed mongers that take from all of the populous and give nothing back but despair
Oh yes....despair is definitely on it's way. Just wait. It's on it's way with stupid people like you letting it happen.Ranmarie you have no idea, bleeding heart liberals just follow the leader. Hope your happy in your ignorance.
Wow. The OP says "Human rights all over the world is what this is all about" (and how could anyone think this was a BAD thing?) and is attacked PERSONALLY by almost every succeeding comment.
Sure glad its not obama.
Time should have chosen a PERSON for "Person of the Year", not a group of people with a cause. This really diminishes Time's designation.
Your comment is without merit and is just a personal attack. Find issues and answers, not personal attacks.
shut the fk up!!!! you dont like any presidents. its a pointless!!!
Can't believe 'W' was on the cover twice! What an insult to humanity!!
Sure, give it to a bunch of people who have contributed NOTHING but class warfare.
"W" was the guy that destroyed this Nation with the support of the GOP & 1%, I also can't believe "W" got on the cover twice.
Actually it was the clinton administration that destroyed the nation by allowing free reign for Chinese imports that took away American Jobs.
What kind of sham is this? Protester and then they put what looks like a Jihadist on the cover?
After Time's sharp turn to the Left in recent years, I'm surprised they're still in business.
I'd say the 'Tea Party' in 2010 had a far greater impact than the protesters in 2011.
Why is there yet another picture of Kate Middleton here? That is ridiculous.
The Tea-Retards are destroying the GOP and our Country, So sad.
This pretty much sums up why nobody really reads Time anymore. Keep it up and in the next few years you will loose both your readers.
Just saying I think I would have picked out a different picture for a protester
iggy75, you are a very ignorant person, and true to your liberal party.
Wake up.
Post # 1:
Sure glad it's not b stevens.
Just one question: why was Herman Cain EVER on ANY list (not including sex offender lists, of course)????
Yawn..... Time is limping into nonrelevance.
Hooray, occupiers! Iraq and Afghanistan hated the US being there.
Now the U.S. hates the U.S. being here!
Keep it up occupiers, until Transformation of the Gov CHANGEs!
So I'm guessing this term will be Time's Political Nonsense Thought-Terminating Cliche Pavlovian Response for the Low-Information Masses Meme of the Year?

Hehe, belittle is not a hyphenated word...
Patriotic American U.S.A.
Are you referring to our nation's very own village idiot; George W. Bush.
It's been reported that Obama is going to name one of the public restrooms at the White House after him. The George W. Bush legacy toilet....
You mean GOP rallies?
Or did I miss something about the Tea Party?
That's after he's re-elected in 2012 for another term.
That's why he has failed to produce jobs for the public. He focused his time on meaningless things and pointing his finger just like the OWS protesters do playing the blame game.
The gov't doesn't create jobs, remember?
Shuklack- The Tea Party (as I understand them to be) are people whom believe that the states are where most of the responsiblities lie for governance and that a smaller federal government is better. THe other part was fiscal responsibilty within the federal government (which we obviously don't have in DC).
If you want to get slighting, I guess by your broad brushing standards the OWS movement would be a DNC rally for additional dependency on large government for all of your needs. Or am I missing something?
Oh really who does? Can you give a specific answer. Probably not. Probably just something elaborate.
Better question would be "what" does.....
I don't see DNC politicians headlining OWS protests.
Wow..... a PROTESTOR.....
over Steve Jobs?
How can anyone ever take this publication seriously again?
What a "SICK" choice--they always choose the "bad guy"--
So glad my subscription to Time Magazine was cancelled a while back. Toilet Paper.
Now I must go and throw up---
This is America today? Look at the available hero candidates that were able to Inspire all Americans, except for Herman Cain.
JoeNY:
I do believe HAMAS was on the Cover of Time Magazine a while back. Can't remember if it was the choice for Person of the Year.
Look what Freedom of Speech Brings in this country--The nasties love it. Other countries, would tear their heads off.
Maybe Time Mag. should be a publication only for Iran or Pakistan.
Heartland:
Are you one of the Marching Solidiers?
Sounds like OWS rhetoric. What have you contributed to Society?, besides reciting the "old line" of Communism.
The person on that list of possibles who is truly deserving is Gabby Giffords!
It really didn't actually, and hardly was it Communist. Keep trying to invoke that Pavlovian response from the rest of your dittoheads though.
I hear THAT! :)
Lindsay Lohan-1950445
"Double Standard" for Time Mag.
Maybe only 99%. ha ha
Anybody else find it amusing that this: "you are a very ignorant person" and this: "Name callers are not needed" are in the same post?
Krissy...
DrDR...
That is not really unusual on this site.
tony, It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Obama is helping fund OWS.
Nah....he figures he'll get their votes for free ???
LOL
BZ...
Tony....# 1.57... So why did you state that the protestors were not protesting at the White House etc if you were following the protests so closely?
I will not dumb down for you or anyone else....
I will continue to be ever ''so brilliantly informative'' as I can, and I leave the spewing of one's self ... to you...
Straight up... LOL
Even more than when they put the mirror on the cover and printed "you are"?
Laura...
You mean "give WI back to the unions". That's all the recall is about.
BZ...
You call the little campout in DC a 'protest' ? Wow ! Really left a lasting legacy, didn't it.
Tony... why don't you do some research or try to view other sources of information like for example...
Just say No to serferation...... LOL
Straight up....
UMMMMMMMMMM- I wonder why nobody reads time anymore?!?
LOL, well, some of the far left still likes to read Time but they have lost all credibility with me.
It is time
Of course Time magazine can put whoever they want on the cover.. it just so happens that this year they support jihadists the most..
Like I said good or bad - and yes we are beginning to see where the chips are falling in the mideast after the arab spring - so far not looking to great but its also not a major surprise.
They can have a hundred protests over there and we'll always bail them out when needed.
And they'll still end up hating us.
This may be a "boring" subject to pick (go, Time Magazine, for not picking one of the more popular nominees available), but it warmed my heart to see The Protester on the cover of Time. Yay! The little guy sure deserves to be the big guy in these days.
The mag used to come into the house, and immediately hit the trash can.
You ask, why did I subscribe?. The mag. was just about being offered for "FREE"; no cost!
"Newsweek" magazine was sold to Comcast for $1. Wonder how much "Time" could command ?
So all the people who rose up and demanded democracy in the middle east are jihadists now? How does that even work?
Believe it or not, but the world is bigger than the United States of America.
Poor choice. It should have been Hosni Mubarak. The inept way he handled the Egyptian protests spread the Arab Spring throughout the mideast.
That's a good pick !
In this limp nation, they probably could.
Hopefully those 4% of the poll do not vote.
Agreed... but like the first poster, I'm sure glad it isn't Obama...
But this thoroughly explains why Time has lost its standing as a magazine worth reading. I haven't bothered with an issue of Time Magazine in years...
Steve Jobs either bought or stole all of his ideas from other people.
Valid point. But the Person of this article is not just the OWS Protester. The article is about a movement and a cultural climate whose actions are escalating globally and impacting nations throughout the world.
Was Bill Gates ever on the cover.. he made a much larger impact than Steve jobs has.
What about Steve Job's cousin, nicknamed "Blow Jobs?" Oh yeah, I haven't seen him all year long, guess he's missing in action.
Gotcha.
Read the article. It's not only about OWS. Get over yourself.
You are blind.
Steve Jobs was a totalitarian dictator - are you really sure he deserves to be Person of the Year?
I didn't know of Steve Jobs was until it was announced he had cancer and even then, was unaware what/who he was. He wasn't that important to my world. To the protesters, though, I could relate.
Steve Jobs only created a revolution of a virus, called selfishness! iThis, iThat!
iBasically am glad iJobs is finally GONE!
That's an awful thing to say. I didn't like his business practices, but you really need to take a good look at yourself when you make crass statements like that.
Bet when she looks, it's fugly.
Longhair
Steve Jobs either bought or stole all of his ideas from other people.
So where do you get your original thoughts and ideas from?
Whiney conservatives are whiney.
I'm busy carrying water for my personal ideology; don't bother me with your stinkin' facts
Yes Jobs did some good things, but this is PERSON OF THE YEAR. The year is 2011. All jobs did this year was die.
And Kim Kardashian won't even be remembered by anyone five years from now.
nylen...
Now i know why I dont read Time....Poor choice
Poor choice? Don't like those Egyptians, Tunisians, Libyans and Syrians fighting for freedom, eh?
Yeah, ya know, if they were to actually topple their authoritarian regimes, they might become our allies, and then we'd have nobody to fight.
Wait a couple of years and tell us how free they all are.
Wait 10
if you guys have your say... we won't be around in 10....
What?? Peewee Herman didn't make it? No more time for Time.
Time mag has been dead for years. Dumb choice. Bad as voting for a freakin republican
The only people reading time are Democrats..
From the number of stupid and mean spirited comments on this blog, I'd say it's mostly conservatives reading it, who have not interest in maintaining the Constitution or Bill of Rights as long as their little lives are complete and happy.
Hope you are including your own stupid remark in the ones you are counting.
Yeah! Democrats actually Read "TIME" instead of gawk at the pictures of say, Kim Kardashian!
Now, that makes sense???
Yup, Dems read Time, Newsweek, NYT, Wash Post, TPM, Politico, etc. In other words, they read! Unlike that other group that just plugs into Fox.
Street protesters. Think:
Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Athens, and even Moscow. And yes, OWS, too.
FACT: Alcohol does the above things and more!
FACT: The Government continues to lie to us!
Aggie... Seen it yourself, or repeating Fox news again?
Peaches.....
Network media...not FOX. Sorry to disappoint. Can you at least be original? Blaming FOX for everything you don't like is really overdone. It is what it is.

Hope this doesn't include the disgusting Tea Party aka, 'baggernuts!
Typical Liberal name caller. What a childish rube.
Attempts at deflecting the argument towards their unintelligent slights at our point of view, or our character, all in the interest of shining the spotlight anywhere but their faulty logic. That's a libby for ya.
Correction: PROUD LIBERAL to you whiney, pathetic neo-nuts!
He is pretty loud there as a liberal.. almost gay even..
Time is one of the mags that David Rockefeller named in his speech, thanking them for their promise of secrecy while being present at their "secret" meetings on their "plans for the world"
It is a terrorist on the cover... this is a subtle attempt at supporting terrorism on Time's part. Time the liberal magazine that supports terrorism.
Why weren't the protesters named when the Tea party was out there? Is Time magazine trying give Fox one more example of liberal bias in the media?
Uh....maybe that's because the Teabaggers have been a complete disaster to the US. Singlehandedly responsible for the lowest Congressional approval rating in history; singlehandedly responsible for the US getting their credit rating downgraded; for bringing Congress to a dysfunctional stop. Tea Party my arse. They're dying, and I, for one, can't wait for the day they're dead.
Tea Party is SINGLEHANDEDLY responsible for the US getting their credit rating downgraded?! Are you effin' JOKING?
It's sad.
And here I thought credit ratings had to due with people not paying on the credit they were using... silly me...
I better call those rating people and tell them to stop looking at how I have handled my finances...because apparently they have it all wrong..
Poor choice. Steve Jobs would have been a much better choice.
I will never read another printed word in Time the rest of my life. "The protester". What a joke.
Should have been Obama for what he has done to the Country and the World (Ooops - for the Country ?)
Perfect choice. Protest is the doorway to change. Sometimes it's not the change we hope for, but; without it we remain complacent.
No this is not the change we want or hope for, you daft. The change I want is who's in the white house, and in our country's spending habits. That's it. I could care less about terrorist "protesters" and free loading hippies.
You better care... because we vote, too!'
:).
Hitler brought change... Only a fool looks at change and assumes it's always a positive thing when someone talks about change.
Change? just like the hope and change that we received from Obummer??????
Not a very dramatic choice. But not unreasonable. If you count all of news coverage of the arab and middle eastern protesters, as well as the occupy movement, "the protester" story has ubiquitous during the past year.
...If you count only the past two months, then given the coverage of Penn State, Jerry Sandusky, and Syracuse, I guess you'd have to pick "the molester" over "the protestor" as the story of the year.
I agree with wats-1..."the cover looks more like a terrorist than a protestor." The protestor? What a joke! Can't tell you the last time I read Time magazine.
Who cares? TIME magazine is no longer relevant in the 21st Century.
Agreed. Time's time has past.
Then why are you reading and commenting on it?
Because MSN's time has not..
I thought the was Obama on the cover.. It looked like a terrorist to me and by the gaunt look of the face I just thought it was Obama.
Go learn how to spell. Libby !
Time = Just another liberal rag !
Time Magazine, what a joke. It is irresponsible on their part to promote anarchy through their selection of the Protester. No wonder we have so many problems in the world today.
Don't be fooled.. that is a terrorist on the cover.. I have not seen one protester covering their face.
This is fantastic! Human rights all over the world is what this is all about, not the greed mongers that take from all of the populous and give nothing back but despair
you're actually describing Time-greed mongerers that take and give nothing back.......but lies!!!!
Could you be any dumber??????
Oh yes....despair is definitely on it's way. Just wait. It's on it's way with stupid people like you letting it happen.Ranmarie you have no idea, bleeding heart liberals just follow the leader. Hope your happy in your ignorance.
Ranmarie- your ignorance knows no bounds.
Wow true Liberal BS at it's best. Why don't you go read something ?
Wow. The OP says "Human rights all over the world is what this is all about" (and how could anyone think this was a BAD thing?) and is attacked PERSONALLY by almost every succeeding comment.
This is Great! This is the best thing that could happen for this this country and the world, the top 1% has enough.
Time magazine is still around?
