TODAY
Choosing a senior yearbook photo is an opportunity for kids to show a bit of individuality.
One student, Sydney Spies, has become embroiled in controversy after an all-student editorial board rejected her photos, calling them "inappropriate."
Watch her appearance on TODAY here and then vote in our poll below.
Are Sydney Spies' photos too inappropriate for a yearbook?

Wow she looks like a prostitute, in her photos and on TV. Her mom does too. She'll be pregnant by the time she graduates LMAO.
That was my first thought~hooker or porn star.
Not for "others" HS year book! More than about you. If you wanted free publicity for a modeling career I hope you 15 minutes of fame are done.
Shame on you mom. This is no role model (no pun intended) for you daughter. Clearly where she gets her "all about her" mentality.
Yearbook staff continue to stand up to this. Good job to you!
Yearbook photos are for representing school life. This students attire would not meet dress code at school so it is not representative of her school life. If modellling was a school activity then perhaps it could be listed in that section but since it appears to not be a school activity then there is no appropiate place for submission of this photo in the school yearbook. I think that if her photographer used this as an ad placement it might be appropiate for submission in that context... She is a beautiful girl and I'm sure could take a beautiful modest photo that would be reflective of school dress codes with her personality exuding even in a more conservativre attire. Best of luck to her! -Patricia in PA
Well said, couldn't agree more with these posts!
While she is a beautiful girl the year book is not a place for these photos.Shame on her mom for not looking at the BIG PICTURE!!!!!!
The picture is not suitable for a HS yearbook. Shame on her mother for letting this get this far!!!! Both Mom and Daughter seem to have no sense at all.
There was nothing else for you all to discuss in the news today.. (REALLY) You should be embarrassed Matt.. I have a story Today show!! Renters who are getting screwed over in this home foreclouser market. You rent a home in good faith only to find out the house you rent is in foreclouser. You loose everything no security deposit back no nothing.. It is happening to me right now and a lot of other people but I bet I don't make it on the Today Show!!
Did anyone notice there was no father in the interview!!!! Perhaps this girl needs a daddy to explain why this is inappropriate seeing her mother is obviously an idiot.
They did the renters story last year Rose.
I am the mother of a 9 yr old and not in a million years would I allow her to submit those photos, but then again, not in a million years would my kid think of doing so. I agree with the previous posts that this mother has not done her daughter any favors. I find both of them to be from another planet. Shame on you mom and good for your, Yearbook staff.
I feel that the direction that this young ladies mother is giving her is in appropriate. The photo looks like something from an adult magazine not something from a high school year book. This young lady needs to understand that you become an adult once you graduate high school. That is the time when you show your individuality not while you are still considered a child/teenager.
It is unfortunate that this girl does not realize the impact of these photos to her reputation. What is even sadder is that her peers have taken more steps to protect her from the lasting legacy of these photos than her own clueless mother. Her mother referred to her as "spreading her wings." Judging from the photos, since this is an "expression of who she is," she's spreading more than her wings.
The girl is obviously way out in left field and the mother is the same. Maybe too much peroxide leaked into their brains. Aside from that joke, what I want to know is if there is a father and what does he think of these two pictures she submitted?
This picture is not at all appropriate for a school yearbook or really at all. Our world has become very acceptable of women being too seductive and showing too much. The yearbook committee made the right choice and it's a shame that her own mother would allow her to express herself in such a matter. She would be more beautiful with more clothes on. Less is not always more.
The pictures of the young lady, are no different than girls wearing strappless dresses that are way above the knee, and i have seen a lot worse pictures in year books.I say let it be in the book.

Forget being a mother of a 9 year old....I am the mother of a 17 year old boy, shall I tell you how he views photos like the one she wants published?
suegolds, perhaps in your yearbook this is accepted, but not in our district's or our children's private school would it be permitted. As another writer indicated, the attire would be against school dress codes and prom attire would not show the abdomen and be that low cut. The pose says it all....really? There comes a time where adults need to be adults and teach about image to these young girls. If I were hiring this girl and found this photo in my research (very easily done) I would have a negative impression of her morals and probably not want that distraction in the workplace. Don't worry, not discrimination as it is always easy to come up with a 'job related' reason, but this is how it works in the real world.
Her mother needs to mother.
I don't know where you are from suegolds, but where I'm from, a picture like this would never make it into the yearbook & like a lot of commenters are saying, it's not just about "now" this picture (especially with national media exposure) will follow her for the rest of her life. In case you are unaware, employers use the internet to get as much information about perspective employees as they can. It's a good thing she doesn't want to go into a business profession because she already has a negative image of her out there (again, way to go mom)!
She looks like the cover of some porn video. Why would they even take the pic in the first place. My guess, the photographers are young men.
Yearbooks imo are suppose to be wholesome and clean, not slutty.
as a mother of a now 22 year old daughter....i would never have allowed this...AT ALL!!! i am all for freedom of expression, allowing our kids to express themselves, their feelings, etc. but i am still a parent and still have a job to do. there comes a time when you have to put your foot down and say "nah-uh". my cousin once said that if they don't say they hate you at one point or another, you're probably not doing your job right LOL.
this is a case of a mother who wants to be a "friend" to her daughter more than a mother. a mother who doesn't want conflict so though she may say something, she won't fight about it.
this girl wants to be a model? good for her. but she knows nothing about the business. if you send out pictures like that, the only jobs you'll be getting are ads for porn sites and sex lines. unless that's what she wants which is fine but still, your yearbook? come one now, what's really the deal? seriously, i think this is more of a case of "look at me, i'm sexy. see how sexy i am?" than the whole i'm trying to be a model thing cause no one ever booked a job by showing their yearbook to an agency. they look at your PORTFOLIO, not your yearbook. does this girl want to be model or a MODEL. if so, i sure hope she has high fashion pics in her collection.
The bottom line is - if it is against school dress code it shouldn't be allowed in the yearbook - what happened to the regular school pictures taken the same for everyone.
I think this girl and her mother are just starting this up to get more public attention on her. Bravo to the yearbook staff.
What bothers me is how some parents can't accept a simple 'no, because we say so.' What authority can a school exert if every decision they make has to be defended by a scumbag lawyer for parents who can't accept the word 'no'? School boards have to keep lawyers on retainer for just these kind of parents. How hard is it to take another photo? And really, if this girl is just trying to express herself can she not express the same things with less skin? Is her range of expression THAT limited?
I've seen racier and more provocative, any grown adult has these days. I'm sure everyone in school has seen racier attire on this girl in real life or on her web page. But why stick it to the school over something so trivial? And who would want to hire a model who can't be flexible? Wouldn't the graceful thing be to allow the school SOME authority over their own affairs or is being the bigger person too much to muster these days? Don't schools teach that anymore? Oh yeah, they don't have the authority to.
Have to assume the girl went to the today show for the publicity... glad the yearbook is staying the course.. I hope they don't cave. I think this mother is teaching her daughter that rules don't count for them.. truly a sad message in today's world :(
The vegas strip is calling her. There trashy beats classy everytime.
This attire is totally inappropriate for a h.s. yearbook. Way back when, when I was in h.s., the photographer had vee shaped drapes that the girls put on and a "tux" cover that the boys wore.
This girl looks like her role model is that "teen bride" - the one that claims to be 17 and is married to a 50-something so-so actor.
I agree with you about the dress code, but you obviously haven't had a kid as a senior in high school. The school doesn't take the photos, you are required to submit your own, and it is not cheap. I got a hold of a good camera, and took my own photos, rather than spend hundreds on a professional photographer.
This young lady's photographer looks to primarily be in the adult industries. The photo in the black dress is not elegant or artful in any respect, just makes her look like a slutty hooker. The first is more tasteful, just too much skin, and certainly not anything worse than you would see in any perfume, makeup, or lingerie advertisement.
Paying for an ad to get the pic into the yearbook is just wrong in my opinion. What is she advertising? an escort service?
What kind of a mother encourages her daughter to dress and act like a whore? If I saw a picture like this in my kid's yearbook, you'd better believe the book would be garbage. This photo is appropriate for Maxim (um)? magazine but that's about it.
while i agree the outfit is inappropriate, i would have to see the yearbook, first. are there pictures of "cheerleaders" in the yearbook? have you seen the outfits they are wearing these days? saddest part of this story is, she got exactly what she wanted, attention! congrats, media for once again playin' the sucka, and to all of us who were reeled in. shame on us hypocrites for reading the article, looking at the picture and then passing judgement!
While I do think it's the school's perogative to decide what does and doesn't go in the yearbook, I have to say that some of these comments on here make me incredibly sad. All these claims that this girl looks like she has no morals, or is a hooker or a slut or trashy. Why should a woman be ashamed of her body? Why can a woman not wear what she wants to wear and not be derogated? If she is a senior, then this girl is presumably 18. Making her an adult. And if that is what she wants to wear then why are we bashing her for it? I despise this idea that women should be ashamed of their bodies and cover them up. That if a woman shows skins that immediately makes her immoral or trashy. Why? Because other people look at her and think "sex"? And if so, whose problem is that? Not the woman's, but the perceiver. It amazes me how judgmental people are and what lengths they'll go to make someone else feel ashamed of who they are or who they want to be.
Let her do whatever she wants. Or get people in her year group to vote on it. Banning a racy photo is no way to promote democracy.
Living in society, there are certain rules that we are expected to follow or we pay the consequences. The workplace has rules, school has rules, you have to follow laws when driving a car, etc. These parents are teaching her that its OK not to follow the rules as long as you've got the looks and the hot body to pull it off? I don't think so.
The yearbook should publish this photo in the back with all the other advertisements.
She should include a price list along with the photo.
I'd be willing to drop a few bills her way.
Hmmmm, no need to comment here; this is one of those rare occasions when I agree with almost everybody on this thread!
The hooker in training photo is totally inappropriate for a high school yearbook.
I'm sorry but you people probably have no problem with the slut show Jersey shore but I think this is been done, maybe a little procaocative, but with what we teach our children these days about using your body to get what you want or where you want, I think that it is a great picture of a beautiful young woman.
So acting slutty is now art? LOL!! This is obviously about getting free publicity for her coming porn career.
Was that her high school yearbook photo or her admissions picture to the stripper\pornstar academy? Her mother needs to be smacked in the head.
A high school student with her own 900 number hmm
man!...what's with you fools...i'd buy that yearbook and only wish i could go back and be in that high school...i'd study asstronomy and go out for the broad jumping team...comments must be all from old women today...
I'm pretty sure this mother thinks she is doing her daughter a great service by promoting this retarded display of teen idiocy. Teenage girls and boys vie for attention and recognition as they mature, but as a parent, one must set boundaries. This beautiful young lady is marketing herself with a trashy C.F.M picture worthy of any escort service promotion because she believes its *cough* artistic. It's the parents responsibility to tell her what her "art" is revealing about her. Too bad this mother is already counting the pornography dollars her daughter will be pulling in to do the right thing now.
I have a friend who is an amateur model and has done what they call 'artistic nudes.' Her artistic nudes are less slutty than what this girl has done in her pictures. It's all about the pose. Those aren't modeling poses, those are Playboy or men's magazine poses.
That being said, my friend wouldn't have put those photos in a yearbook. Neither should this girl.
To those saying the vote should go to those in her class: if that high school is anything like mine, those creating the senior pages are seniors themselves and the editor is a senior. If the yearbook staff is turning it down, chances are her class would turn it down. The only ones who wouldn't are boys who just want to...well, you get the idea.
bob, what a perverted, dirty old man thing to say. So, you'd be OK with your daughter doing this? Or are you just looking for more ways to get off? Your comment is a HUGE reason why this should happen in a HS yearbook. No one should be looking at a yearbook and get turned on. Sick.
*shouldn't
It looks like a cute outfit a young person would wear. No big. But, the kicker for me is, would she be allowed to wear that to school? If not, no yearbook photo. If it is ok to wear then yes. But I doubt it is ok to wear that in class.
And calling her a hooker and other names? Really? Sorry folks, average dress there. It is not 1950 anymore.
These aren't modeling photo's, which would be to highlight the outfit the young lady is wearing. No, she is posing provocatively and looks like either a future reality star or porno star. It's sad when parents allow this, but the yearbook staff did the right thing.
Funny thing. I think the mother and daughter are now very happy since they are getting national attention.
you see pics like these on resumes now. though i think it's wrong, i say, let them do it. it's their own legacy they're creating.
And sorry, Tiredofsilly. Wearing a shawl as a blouse is not "average dress" for a teen.
Boy the sensors really got up in arms about this, not to mention the double standard. If you will notice ,there is a picture of a young man posing with his shirt off. So tell again what is appropriate for the yearbook. I as a parent wouldn't want my daughter to do this, but if you're going to let one kid do it and not another well that speaks for itself. Discrimination anyone?
reeblite, in this case these photos would be representative of the school and it's legacy. If they allow these photos, they have to allow any other photos students submit, and one never knows where that would end.
looks good to me
So, Tomvet. Are you saying that if a boy has his shirt off, a girl should be able to show as much of her chest as she wants, or it is a double standard? Really? You do know this is High School...right?
Tomvet, as I understood the story this morning, the shirtless pictures of guys were NOT allowed as well.
Plenty of ways to be 'artistic' without slutty and still look like a model.
I am all for her showing what career path she has chosen, but she could have expressed herself with more taste. Has she never watched ANTM? There are ways to look like a model and not be "Hoochie". Unless that's the type of model she wants to be. This is not a portfolio book for her.
tomvet the article stated that they denied the photo of the shirtless boy.
@TomVet, She was offered a spot, IN THE SAME category as the male with his shirt off. ADVERTISING SECTION. $300 for a spot, Which is rather cheap compared to the full shoots an advertising agency would charge for a photo set for her resume.
I agree that the photo should not be her Senior Picture, but If she's too cheap to pay for the advertising section (Which is Public Exposure for her career ) then she's never going to make it in the Modeling business anyway. Porn maybe. People like Cindy Crawford, Bo Derek, Mischa Barton, and the other supermodels werent lucky, they had to earn their spots. Gotta pay your dues to get the dough.
The Student Editors voted her picture in-appropriate. Generally from what I remember from High School, the Yearbook staff were the ones most likely to understand what was going on in their school, their community, and their era, and what is best for their- (look out, one of them even said it in the video) HARD WORK and REPUTATIONS of the YEARBOOKS legacy.
Ms Spies has a choice, Pay for the Advertising, or use another photo.
@siobhan27 in #1.29:
First off, although not graphic, the photos are sexually suggestive, which makes them inappropriate for a high school yearbook photo. Nobody is saying the girl can't do sexually charged photoshoots (provided it's legal)--but her senior picture in the high school yearbook isn't the appropriate forum for such photos.
Second of all, assuming that she is 18 might hold true for many seniors, but that is not a safe assumption. I started my senior year when I was 16 and graduated when I was 17. Just sayin'....
I agree with almost all of you. She would not be allowed to wear such a thing to school, it should not be allowed in the yearbook.
I remember, when I was in high school, they passed a ban on spaghetti string tank tops, even. The straps had to be at least 2 inches wide. That being said, I'm positive the midriff baring shawl as a shirt would not be appropriate, let alone the dress in the second photo.
I'm all for self-expression, but I feel there is a better way that could have been shown via these photos.
As suspected, the whole thing is a publicity stunt. Of course the photo was rejected and Sidney knew it would be when she submitted it. It's inappropriate for a yearbook photo and the yearbook editors have the final word. This is probably the first time little miss Princess has been told "No!" but behaving badly seems to be the quickest way to infamy. I mean fame.
She looks she is preparing a photo spread for a porn magazine. The mother is crazy. She wants to look and walk the streets as a whore, she can do that after graduation.
Absolute 0 character and just the type of shock value and deliberate twisting of the obvious implications of what this little whore means to do with this photo and interview.
Would someone please explain to mother and daughter what the difference between sexy and slutty? A woman can be sensual, seductive and classy without showing off a lot of skin.
Although, in our reality TV (read that as crap TV) driven world, I don't think that message will be noticed.
I try and stay away from all social registers because of previous identity thefts, junk mail and scams. I value my privacy much more than having to create spurious accounts by dishonest means on these ridiculous invasive online services.
A long time ago, I enjoyed going on msnbc.com for their reporting. After the president of nbc opening declared he was taking the whole system toward a "progressive bent" i.e. socialistic and leftist, I left them.
I have watched the stock of GE the parent company fall almost 40% since msnbc.com bought newsvine which I had to sign on to to read and comment on this story.
I object and everyone else should object by this underhanded trick of making people sign on to this site due to a demand by today to go to their site and comment. If the Today show is using government authorized broadcast bands and wants viewer feedback, then we should not be forced to join a private social network that declares it is beyond the federal laws of the U.S. government.
If you read newsvine, it states that it is a private entity under msnbc.com and can and will ban anyone who it deems unworthy to comment. It also sets up "what it calls itself a country within a country"! And is not govern by the laws of free speech or any other laws under the constitution or any state.
I sick of seeing moral pollution under the banner of progressivism or socialism.
If I want to buy a playboy, hustler or other porn, I am sure I can find a source in town or on the internet, but it is my choice. And I do not want to be forced to join a social network by a public news television program that should be a source of honest bias free information.
There are going to be a lot of complaints about this. Write your senators and congressmen and lets get these companies responsible to the American People.
The internet, public broadcasting and all too large companies taking over large portions of communication for their self interest and banning the forced members when they complain is anti-American.
(continued from previous post)
My 15 year old son wants a copy of that yearbook for it's "artistic merit". He says it "inspires" him.
Given what I know of 15 year old boys (he's my second at that age), I'm guessing that his "inspiration" is for more lotion... if you catch my drift.
KRISSEY!!!!!!....you nailed it...contact me immediately... i'll show you what you've been missing and show you the reason you reacted in such a stupid manner.
95% of the people who are commenting on this article joined newsvine today to comment on this were tricked to join newsvine a private venture under msnbc.com which is a private venture. Using a government authorized public broadcast use permit to drive listeners to a politically motivated private internet organization has to be investigated.
I checked Davidson who is CEO/president of newsvine and he had promised publicly to answer his emails. And he has refused to answer anyone.
President of msnbc.com, Tillinghast, in his interview about msnbc.com and newsvine stated unequivocally that msnbc.com under newsvine would be unmoderated and there are moderators Sally and Tyler Adams and more who regularly ban conservative comments and ban conservative commentators. This is the freedom of speech guaranteed to us by the U.S. constitution and the U.S. Government? Write your senators and congressmen. Lets get back our liberities.
All you people up in arms about this need to look beyond these photos to a much bigger picture! Which is the one posted outside of year books on billboards and throughout magazines all over this country!
If you find this girls pictures inappropriate why don't you find the sexualized adds in every media venue in the nation that utilizes and uses the sexually charged images of girls who are far younger than this to sell you everything from blue jeans to makeup in appropriate as well?
And while you are in some self righteuos moral fervor over all this... take a look at where it comes from and who endorse's it! Need not to look much further than the mirror! Its true hypocracy to demonize the actions of this girl and her mother while willingly endorsing the same actions and attitude everyday without lifting a finger or voice in protest against that!
Want to cry foul? cry foul with the society we all helped to create and go after the problem where it might do some good...and thats not this girl or her mother but the acceptable sexual level of media and promotion our society willingly created and daily endorses!
You consume these images everyday of your lives and do so without second thought to its moral value or lack thereof... other than what you will buy because of it and you cry foul with this!! Please!!
Msnbc.com gets paid by viewership which is tallied as hits. Using their public television sites to driver people to comment on their private sites to deceive its advertisers that it by itself is increasing its readership is deceptive.
This is what is wrong with America. Not the large companies that higher thousands of people to produce products but by large companies as this that control the means of communication and as the president of nbc stated intend to indoctrinate them towards a progressive(socialistic) bent.
The photo is fine you bunch of prudes. The girl looks great in the photo. Have you seen the cover of a porn film lately? They don't look like her picture. Who's commenting on this link the Puritans? Her mother doesn't have anything to do with her photo since she's 18. If they had approved of the photo this wouldn't make the news.
Diamong60. It would help if you learned to use English correctly a porn film does not have a cover. It is a movie. A book has a cover. A magazine has a cover.
If I want to see a porn film or a porn book or magazine and I don't know where to get one, I most certainly will email you for some information.
As you decided to insult the majority of the commenters here as prudes, then we can call you a degenerate. Fair enough?
You are commenting on this link therefore as you define all those commenting as puritans, are you a puritan? Another $200,000 public education wasted! Can't use the English language properly and makes glaring erroneous misuse of words and meanings in his meanderings.
I am sure she made the pictures and created the publicity to get a contract for some porn magazines or porn films or create some publicity to get an interview for some chance at the movies.
This was her big chance at a zillion dollars of free publicity! And she suckered you in! Hope you get a payoff, send her your comment, you might get a signed picture of her.
There are many items of clothing our children are prohibited from wearing to school that are, nevertheless, allowed in the year book: camouflage, shorts (we have limitations in that they must drop 2" below the fingertips), tank tops, spaghetti straps, tee shirts with slogans, etc. We also have the "no boobs, no butt, no belly" rule, yet I have seen numerous peek-a-boo shirts appear in the book when they were in style. Just because the school limits wearing certain articles of clothing doesn't mean the personal senior pictures have to follow suit. We had one girl wear a ballerina costume which was stunning, portrayed who she really was, and showed a heckuva lot more skin than our featured freak here. We had another girl submit a picture from one of those old-fashioned photo booths that shoved her chest nearly to her chin, yet was darling. We had a third guy wearing a wet suit that kept no secrets.
These kids are growing up in a world with more exhibitionism in it. Their pants hang down their bum, they wear thong skivs with the full intent of advertising it, their bikinis make ours look prudish. Even their prom dresses are geared toward hyper sexuality.
This yearbook photo is her chance to demonstrate the person whom she is becoming. It is sad that her picture shows the edge of sexuality on it, which is making some very uncomfortable, because my best guess is that this will be her height of beauty.
My BEST guess is that her fellow students were a bit envious and deliberately censored her picture. I have been a model, and this picture would be almost chaste in the world of modeling. Were I her mother, I would have suggested a covered belly, or pull the bum in a bit. Maybe both. I think the bare shoulders show nothing. And yet...if they allow her this little stretch, think what comes next.
The school played directly into her hand.
She will be doing porn soon and pervs will be shooting into their hands.
Our rights to objective news and access to bias free reporting on public free tv and in the U.S. are under assault. This should have been a non story.
NBC has been on a tear to try and improve its ratings though sensationalism and shock value. Not only did it report the story with the pictures, but planted a suggestion (which probably already was there) that a lawsuit against the school should be in the mind of these two women but also flew them in to NYC first class, put them up in a 5 star hotel, feed them and who knows what other enticements they threw in to get them on the show.
WOW must have run through their heads! This is the golden opportunity to get an agent, see some porn companies in New York, Modeling agencies and make our fortune!
I don't know why they use the term porn stars. I can see no occupation lower. I understand why women want to sell their bodies and make these poses. The demand for this material is overwhelming. When I read that porn movies make more money than the theater movies, I realized how much depravity is out there. We hear about it every hour and every day, from priests to movie people, to politicians to the guy or woman next door.
I don't like it and I see from 99% of the respondents on this comment site, they don't like it either!
What is it with kids these days that they feel the need to show off everything? HS yearbooks are NOT the place to do this. I live in Colorado, and I applaud the school for standing their ground. Shame on this mother for not being a better influence on her daughter. Well I guess if Lohan can make it into Playboy so can this young lady, but HS yearbook is not the place to get your first shot.
All that's missing is a stripper pole.. We may not all be high class people but graduation is about becoming a dignified adult and the editor is supposed to uphold that when setting the layout.. Glad they rejected them, at some point too much will be just too much..
When I went to High School, we had a name for a girl that dressed like her "a SL--, After High school we had a term for a girl who dressed like her and that was "a CALL GIRL" Now we would just call her a " WH--E. This girl is going to be either pregnant before she enters college or a prostitute. Shame on the mother for even thinking these photos are appropriate, of course her style is much different than her daughters, they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, with her as an example no wonder the girl thinks her photo's are OK. Grow up MOM.
I believe that' what Porfolios are for,
NOT YEAR BOOKS,
If I was her mother, I'd be furious
Every time an attractive woman shows off what she has, all the fat / ugly / old women throw a hissy fit because they haven't got it. That's all this is.
Always room for one more hooker/porn star in this big old world.
Wow, Siobhan27, your comment makes me laugh in disbelief. NOBODY said that women should be ashamed of their bodies. NOBODY said that you shouldn't be who you want to be. You're completely misunderstanding the point. The point of most of these comments is that high school is NOT an appropriate place to advertise her overly exposed body for everyone to see. Not everyone wants to see that, thank you very much. If she wants to advertise these kinds of pictures for modeling agencies to see, then fine, do it somewhere else. I don't care. But don't you dare get the other students involved in this. School is supposed to be a place where education and learning is the top priority, not looking like a freaking attention whore. She's an adult, yes, but keep in mind that there are actually students who are much younger than her and NOT of legal age yet who are attending the same school. Therefore, it's simply not appropriate and you need to understand that.
As for the attire, I agree with someone else in saying that the first outfit is a bit more stylish and has more taste, but neither outfit is anywhere near acceptable in a school-based environment. Both the girl and her mom seriously need to get their eyes checked if they think it is.
wow some of you people are waaaaaay over opinionated and need to just keep it to yourself, first of all she is 18!!!!!!!!!!!!! hellooooooo adulthood goodbye being a "child". second, the photo is not racy, provocative, porn, or anything other than a great shot of a great looking gal. some you people have some very tight pants on and you do more harm than good. yearbook photos ive never seen them do full body shots unless in a collage, so i would assume it would be a bust or head shot for class photo, ive seen worse in yearbook photos. (hellooo prom dresses)
for you people to say she looks like a whore, tramp, prostitute, etc. if this is what you see when u look at a clothed female in a photo them you need seek psychiatric help for you sexual disorders. while it is the decision of the yearbook club w/e to approve of photos and if they thought it was inappropriate, fine. wouldnt this be solved if the school paid for head-shots and didnt accept personal photos? seems to me alot of these problems are created because the people in power dont do their jobs for the people but only for themselves.
She may be 18 but she's still in high school dipwad. The point is its not appropriate for a hs yearbook. And its not just the clothes but the body position and facial expression that make it sexual in nature. When you were in hs did you walk around with your bum sticking out and a "I just want to get it on" look onyour face? Know what girls at my hs were called that did that? Ho's. And guess what? They were just that...go figure. If you don't want to get labled don't dress like that. You can be beautiful and sexy without being that obvious.
I swear, I bet the same people who're bitching about this girl's picture are the same people who bitch about them "Mooslems" being too uptight and treating their women harshly and all that nonsense.
Gimme a break! Is this the US of A, or what?!
lol i my point exactly, highly opinionated people that think they know something when they see it. you do know sight is subjective right? while you my see a "ho" i see a beautiful young lady in a great pose, shes 18 remember!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i would agreed as i said that the yearbook club w/e has final say. i dont see why they would use full body shots for a student photo. take that photo and crop it problem solved.
lol facial expressions are also subjective and for you to say that her facial expression means she a "ho" then i feel sorry for you and again you should seek psychiatric help for you sexual disorders. if i made a facial expression of taking a dump but i was clearly not taking a dump. would i still be taking a dump to you based on my facial expression alone? do you think she should have done a clown face with that fit it would be better? i would fault the yearbook club for lack of management and planning, personal photos should never be selected.
"When you were in hs did you walk around with your bum sticking out and a "I just want to get it on" look onyour face? Know what girls at my hs were called that did that? Ho's. And guess what? would you say to a lightly dressed female who got raped, that she deserved to get raped because she dressed so lightly? see how disturbed that makes you out to be? if you referred to girls at your high school that dressed "sexy" as "ho" than you were just part of the problem.
She looks like she should be doing a photo shoot for "Hustler".
The mom is an Idiot. Next she'll be trying to help her daughter get into porn. The girl definitely looks like she's on her way.
It's obvious the mother is ignorant and taught her daughter ignorance as well. Yearbook pictures are definitely not the time or the place for that particular look.
Shame on the mom for support this decision....
That's ok, she will have a future with Hef... I see her as his next bride!
I can't wait till next year, T-backs and Thongs. It is not a year book it is a slut book
If she and her mother want to take pictures of her looking like a trollope and slattern, let them find a more "appropriate" place for them, like in an application for a strip bar, not in a high school yearbook.
Hunt-797031 you can't understand the difference between a student high school yearbook photo and a paid advertisement meant to seduce you to spend money? Hell I learned that in my first year of college when I was 17. You spend money and you get to look at porn. You look at a high school year book, you get to see pictures of friends and enemies not future porn stars trying out.
Hell she paid the $300 to put her advertisement out. All future readers of the year book, if they want to make a porn movie will know who to call. Hey is she gets really lucky, she might get a call from a politician. We know how that winds up!

She is going to spend her first advance on a boob job.
So what is she going to say 20 yrs from now when her husband and kids ask to see her high school year book? The pic is totally inappropriate now and it is a regret she will have to live w/ for the rest of her life if it is allowed (which it should not be - the yearbook is no place for pics like this). If I were her mom and saw a pic of my daughter like this, she'd be grounded until her 26th b-day. And I certainly would be too embarrassed to go public w/ it.
Thank GOD she's 18... otherwise I could be taken to prison just for my thoughts about that photo.
I see a lot of folks here that strike me as pissed off that she's not as ugly as they were in HS...
For $300 she can have her picture placed as an advertisment in the yearbook. If she includes her cell number I bet she will get lots of calls. Some modeling agencies are always looking for new talent...
Well what’s "appropriate" is always going to be very subjective so I can’t understand how all these people can look at this issue in such black and white terms. Like people saying that they would "never allow" their daughters to submit such a photo. A seventeen year old girl should have the right to dress any way she likes, as long as it does not violate the dress code of her work or school that is. In fact the reason most adults have problems in life is because for 18 years they were told everyday what to think, how to act, how to speak, what and who they should like, etc., etc. Some parents mistakenly think that a child is a blank piece of clay, which must be molded into being a "good" person when in fact this often has the opposite effect. There is already a very unique individual inside of that child from day one.
Back to the issue at hand though, any editor of any publication has final say so on what goes into that publication and what does not. I understand that these photos were supposed to illustrate the student’s "interests" but she could have done something model like without being so sexually suggestive – perhaps a little more Vogue and a little less FHM. Also its worth mentioning that someone who constantly feels the need to show off their sexuality like this is often very insecure underneath so I’m sure she has some issues she needs to deal with. This is evident from the fact that she will not even consider submitting a less sexually suggestive modeling pic of herself for publication in the yearbook.
One more thing I need to say. If this girl really wants to get into modeling she’s going to have to learn that its her job to do what the photographer wants her to do, not the other way around. If he wants more glamorous and less sexy she had better be able to pull it off at the drop of a hat. Also when it comes to deciding which shots will go in the magazine and which will not, its going to be up to the editor, not her. She will have no say so in it so she better get used to it now.
A lot of comments about what her parents should or shouldn't do; I wonder how well those same posters would like to have someone telling them how to raise their kids. I wouldn't let or want my daughter to put either of those pictures in the yearbook but I don't expect the whole world to accept my judgement in all matters.
Regardless, it's the schools yearbook and they can do whatever the hell they want whether the girl likes it or not. Maybe she needs to grow up a little bit and accept that she can't always have what she wants.
I see a lot of fat, ugly, bitter women in this thread, and the cuckold men that they've turned into body-hating loonies. At least if all the venom in this thread is accurate. Honestly folks, get over yourself. She's wearing clothes. Next you'll know you'll want the girl to wear a burka... Honestly. If you have that much of a problem with the natural human body, even covered up, it means you probably have more issues about your own body than theirs. If you can't show off your stretch marks, she can't have an artistic photo 'cause she's actually nice looking.
What the girl seeks is individuality, something quite precious to the younger age, where "the norm" is something they don't want at all. When I was a boy my most prized possession was a Meowth toy, and I wanted to take a school photo with it. They let me. Everyone will forever know I was a Pokemon dork, and I'm ok with that. That's who I was way back when. I say if I can take a dorky middle school photo, let this girl have her artsy photos too.
I would not allow my daughter submit a pose like that and would be upset if she would consider something of that nature. I hope I have raised her to have more common sense.
That being said...
At least this girl in the story is 18. I have seen how many of the middle school girls dress here in Maryland when they allow casual Fridays...yes...12-13 year old girls dressed like they are working the streets. Sad to see it...and what is worse is that many of these girls talk about sex and boyfriends, etc. Not something they should be focusing on at their age. It is a sad outlook of our youth today.
Yes the photo is in questionable taste, but there are other issues we have that should rank higher on our priority list.
i think she's keeping it real...everywhere you look today including msn you'll see that people must have sex appeal if they are going to be employed...men must be a minimum 6' with a lot of hair and good physique...women must be fit and show what they've got...like it or not that's the way it is.
As inappropriate as both of these pictures are, I think the pose is what really makes her look bad, she looks like a pin-up girl on the front of PlayBoy. She could have worn either outfit and done a tasteful pose and cropped the pic to show top portion of her body and the pics wouldn't be so bad. She purposely submitted slutty pics, it certainly wasn't necessary.
Swagganaut I agree with you. Way to many over opinionated people. From what I see there is nothing wrong with either of those two pictures. the video they were going through the pages and right there is a young boy with No shirt or T shirt. Do you really think that your son can go to school without a shirt AH NO. But that is ok to go into the yearbook. Hmm not the same standards for her as the guys. Your all such GOOD parents . Man who said on the today show that this was news worthy??
Some of you ( if it is not allowed in the school so it should not be in the yearbook. It was fine with the yearbok staff until, the Principal had them in for a talk then it was not ok. But if she pays them $300.00 It will get into the as an add. (full page)IF they call it unappropriate before Why the heck is it appropriate for 300 dollars??? Money changes everything
And you can't understand "wilsonaide" why she thinks its appropriate? Go ahead and hide your head in the sand! Denial of the facts will get you everywhere!LOL. Take a good long look at "Brittany spears" first video that took her to fame! But go ahead and try to make distinctions with no differences if you like.... you're not selling it to me! Its the old "whats good for the goose is not good for the gander" argument and it doesn't work! Its one thing for the school yearbook staff to refuse her...but a whole other matter for you and yours to ridicule the girl from some moral highground for submitting the pictures in the first place! Pure hypocracy plain and simple!
You folks seem to be missing the point.
Just because someone thinks it is totally inappropriate for a high school yearbook does not mean they are jealous. And maybe women "must show what they got", but not in a school yearbook.
The key word here is "APPROPRIATE"
There is a time and place for everything.
That line seems to have been blurred over the years til now anything goes, anywhere. Sad...
bob-3895945, please mind rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
I think that was the dumbest story that I've ever heard on TV. Who cares? Talk about something that matters.
I agree with John....dumb story and ridiculous that Today advanced this girl's career by airing it. Who cares!?
She is not suggesting that she's trying to spread her wings in that photo. Its more like she trying to spread her legs. Now that we know her mom is less intelligent then her I would love to know what dad thinks about this...
You beat me to this comment! I was thinking the exact thing. And the fact that Dad is not with them speaks volumes . . .
I agree, this story should have never been on the Today Show.
What difference does it make, really? The only ones who would even be interested in looking at her year book are her classmates. My yearbooks are packed away and haven't been looked at forever. I've seen a lot more provocative photos on a billboard for all to see. Must be a slow day in the news world!!!
I concur!
vjb13, welcome to 2012! In this era of technology do you really think that she and her classmates are the only people that will see the photo? Really?
When she goes for her first real job after realizing that chance of a lucrative modelling career are slim, her employer will probably research her past as she will not have adequate job history. When this photo pops up on the internet, yes yearbooks are accessible online, do you think his thoughts will be "she was such a sweet girl!".........
J. Giles Band's "Centerfold" song comes to mind from this picture.
I don't this pic should be in her year book at all. First of all she is 18 years old yea she can pick and choose what she wants to do with her body picture whatever but she will not get any respect from her class mates what so ever they will try and do anything. How is it art? there is a dress code for a reason!!!!
I was wondering the same thing as many others, where is the father? I know if I were her father she sure wouldn't be putting any picture like that in school yearbook, and not even as an ad. I wonder if this girl has a grandparent that is still alive, I'm quite sure the grandmother would be shaking her head in shame. I'm guessing there are some brothels in Nev. that would like to hire Sydney; no, she wouldn't be innocent very long.
Okay, just received a long, emotional email from someone named Pete####. Apparently, he feels that my not hiring her due to the picture would be immoral. As bizarre as it was for him to go to the trouble, it raises some questions. First, does he and others really believe that the person who is doing the hiring thinks she projects a moral image? Does he really think that it is a good business practice to hire someone that may disrupt the workplace with a 'past' as the photo may allow some to think? Does not matter if it is true or not, an interviewer can only make a decision based on what he sees. This is the adult world. How you present yourself is how people will perceive you. Your past matters, expecially now in the electronic age, which was the overall point.
Also, as far as morality, hiring someone present thierselves in an immoral manner is against good practices. You can always teach skills, but you can't teach attitude!
Oh and Pete.......my example was simply that to show how it works in the real world. It does not mean I lie and cheat. Really? If you really care about this girl, which seems to be the case, try teaching her how to present herself with personal respect.
She probably dressed that way to hide her wide butt. One word comes to mind when I see her pictures...."slut". I'm sure mom is proud of her.
So, Im not an expert in the modeling world or anything, but i read if you want to break into modeling for a career, you need to get on it as early as12 or 13 years old. If you haven't broken in by 18 or 20, then its not going to happen. Those are the average ages of the top models in the industry.
So - I never knew the "PS" in most school district names stood for "Porn School". I'm guessing hers is PS69 - a position I'm sure she's adept at, considering her appearance in that picture. Modeling? She's already at the top end of the spectrum for hiring and a photo like that won't land her a job with a class agency, but Larry Flynt might hire her for a few issues! She's an attention whore, plain and simple.
Cropped as it would be for a typical senior yearbook photo spot (head, shoulders only) there is nothing wrong with the picture. So why make it an issue? Crop the shot and move along.
moifromMI You liked being tricked and used by the Today Show and nbc and msnbc.com? You do know that if you used your real email, it is now in the public domain as you had to sign in to newsvine to comment.
Hey I got suckered a couple of times by using my real email on these social chat channels. You don't know they compile lists of emails and use them as they see fit?
Today is owned by nbc which is owned by G.E. and I have a lawsuit against a G.E. affiliate in a foreign country that stole my identity and another company that created a credit card and rang up a large debt. G.E. also is an umbrella company that loans money, does credit checks and has a million tentacles in a hell of a lot of companies.
I went through hell for several months. I have warrants out against a few people.
Real bad idea to get your email address out in the public.
The song that comes to my mind is " Runaround Sue" or how about " the Bitch is Back" or better yet " I'm too sexy for"
wilsonaide,
Loosen up that tinfoil hat a little bit. We're having fun at the ho's expense. I'm sorry if that gives the man the power to beam microwaves and put flouride in the water supply.
I have a distant relative who is a lawyer and after a few drinks, he didn't care about the merits of the case or if he won or lost as long as the newspaper spelled his name and address right. At least he was honest about his character.
These women have no character.
Its all about money!
It is VERY simple. If you cannot wear those clothes to school, you cannot wear them in a yearbook photo.
As I said earlier... she will be the next Mrs. Hefner. This is just plain old provocative porn to give all the little boys and old geezers some jollies.
LostFlorida After looking at your comments, you did microwave that flouride in your drinking water too long.
becky, I think she is aiming for a bigger audience than that.
becky, is that jealousy I detect?
I think that both of the photos that she wants to submit make her look like a porn star or a stripper.
.
I totally agree! At first I thought that she was topless and she used a permanent marker to "fill in" her bare chest and upper arm area so that the picture (in her point of view) would be more acceptable.
A good question that a few people have asked is, where is her father?? I'm also wondering how young she was when she first started "expressing herself"?
Seriously, is she any "less" dressed than a cheeleader, pom pom girl, dance team girl or gymnast? Or are you all "haters" because she looks better than you or that she could have a career capitalizing on her looks? To the commentor who said she'd be pregnant before long, I seriously doubt it if shes' sincerely wants a modeling career she will be taking plenty of precautions if she is sexually active. Babys cause weight gain, stretch marks, hip spread, and sometimes changes in breast size, and in skin. Serious potential models get that and usually wait to procreate.
Not "less" dressed, just more "slutty" dressed. There is a big difference. I am sure that if she were your 18 year old daughter you would have a much different tune.
They're just all jealous because she is a major piece of ass.
Cheerleaders in our high school had tops that covered the midriff and slightly longer than normal skirts. We had a colorguard instead of dance (I was on it, and I've since coached a squad) and the girls wore full tops and pants, the sleeves were sheer on the tops, but that's about it. We also had older uniforms that were white or black blouses with a black skirt that hit just below the knee. We were glad for pants and sleeves when we got them, hehe.
The point isn't the amount of skin she is showing. All of us here aren't prudes, and we realize that cheerleaders, dancers and gymnasts show more. They do it for an athletic reason, not just to get people hot and bothered. That is the ONLY reason she is dressing and posing like this.
She can blather on about artistic expression all she likes, but the fact is, when young girls dress like that, they are looking for people to see how hot they are. Period. And the yearbook isn't the place for that.
of course guys would make the comment that people are "just jealous", I can guarentee that if they have daughters now or in the future they would not let them put pictures like this in a yearbook. Sure main reason that some guys find this "okay" for a school yearbook is because they find her "sexy". I will admit she is a beautiful girl, but this is not appropriate for a school yearbook. She wouldnt be allowed to wear that outfit in school so why should it be appropriate to put it in the SCHOOL yearbook, besides that, far as I know people looking for models look at portfolios(sp?) not yearbooks. I get that she wanted to "express herself" but she could have worn a more appropriate outfit....perhaps an actual shirt instead of a scarf/shawl, the skirt itself doesn't look that bad judging by what i could see in the picture, but her pose & top is what makes it so provocative. Also don't see anything "artistic" about it.
I can see that things have obviously changed since my son had his HS graduation pictures done. Then the young men and young women dressed nicely and had their pics done by a local professional Photographer. Not by a Playboy Photographer.
That mother is cluelss. If her daughter wants to be a model, fine. But a HS yearbook is not the place to show it off. Hugh Hefner will have this girl spread out in the centerfold before year end.
agreed.im 14 and i would be EMBARRESSED to be seen like that half naked. I model a little, but this is over the top.and being beautiful isnt an art,u dont have to express that you love to model through your HS yearbook.
@Skrewdworld - I actually did modeling in high school and my senior pictures were very appropriate. The distaste for these pictures has a lot more to do with her poses than her choice of clothing. The only magazines these would get her booked for are maxim or penthouse.
My guess, her mom has been wanting to pimp her out for some time now. To her credit at least she waited until she was of age.
Always hated that word star and more when it is used with porn.
I read a bit about them. Tragic people really. No self esteem and burn out really quickly. Can't form human attachments and they have sex but it doesn't thrill them after doing it for money and faking it for so long. And who the hell would want to marry anyone like that? Bad ego trip and a quick rush to divorce court!
Hugh Hefner will be in touch shortly honey, don't you worry. You'll have the career you most desperately seek.
Hah! You beat me to it!. With those pictures, she is definately hoping to snag Mr. Hefner, get her mom to live in the mansion too and they could do a 'spred' together. ICK. I believe in supporting your kids, but this is OUT OF LINE. Who is the parent here???
BAHAHAHA!! Exactly!
Why does it even read woman's photo? This is a high school girl. Her mom is talking about spreading wings thats not what your daughter is spreading. TODAY should be ashamed for allowing her to promote herself this way. But If Hefner is not already on life support his lackeys will come calling. I am proud of the students for having the forsight to see this was inappropriate. Paying the $300 means the editorial staff won't have the inappropriate photo count against them in competition. What is going on in her household?
Google her mom. Miki Spies from Durango. Whoa - there is quite the sorted story there. I guess she has been seeking publicity from her hometown paper for her inappropriate behavior. Whoaaaa. The apple does not fall far from the tree. Thank you Today Show for this utterly disturbing and pathetic piece of journalism. Guess they didn't do their homework on mom.
Couldn't agree more with they person that said Hugh Hefner will be in touch shortly. This girl is going to have a long, unhappy row to hoe, Pun noted.
Cynthia, I googled her mom and found nothing valid. I watched the interview with her mom. There are a set of pics claiming to be of the girl and her mother, they are not the same people. The women, who they claim to be gay, does not even resemble Miki Spies. The girl resembles the imposter, but not identical. Let's not take unnecessary leaps and slander these people anymore. The mother clearly has poor judgement, but is not online as being anything less than what was portrayed during the interview.
I know the mom, she is gay. The dad owns a bar/pool hall and has both kids (there's a brother) work there on occasion. The dad is a bitter sl** than the mom or the daughter.
I don't think the picture is appropriate for the yearbook. And it is nice that there is no double standard - they did not allow a picture of a shirtless male in the book either.
I also think the second picture is far worse than the first picture! The first picture wouldn't have been so bad if she was wearing a full shirt instead of a shawl - there is very little revealed on the bottom half.
She could have had a much more tasteful modelling picture submitted that still represents modelling.
Oh yes, that's her mother in the previous Durango Herald story. These two are publicity hounds and can't get enough attention in Durango, where we like to discuss pertinant social issues in an intelligent fashion. Please don't associate these two idiots with our beautiful town.
SO glad my daughter is NOTHING like this one. I pity these attention whores, it's so sad really. " Look at me Look at me Look at me!!!!" What happens down the line when your looks aren't all that? Pathetic. Develop a personality, get a degree, join the military - - do someting to be proud of! Any slut can go half naked and arch their back. Very base. Lowest common denominator. Easiest way out. Beauty is only skin deep, remember that. And beauty fades. What happens when she is older and invisible to men (especially); how much more pathetic will she be then? What stunts will she be pulling then?
Ok...I did not see the Herald article. But now that I did, why does it matter? Her mother being gay is not relevant. Now she may love publicity as seems to be the case. But the real issue, as I see it, is that the child is not receiving good guidance and is presenting herself publicly in a less than flattering light. It will hurt her more than help her in the long run. I think most of us would not have allowed our children to even have the photo taken let alone use it in the yearbook!
Let me see....moms is a weirdo pervert.... now her daughter is....shocking.
The girl is 18 years old. Her mother approves. Nothing wrong with the pictures. Anyone can see girls dressed in that fashion almost anywhere on any day. She's rather pretty and maybe thinks she's much prettier than she actually is. I personally would much rather see a pretty girl reveal her ass than make an ass of herself over an unremarkable ass.
"The mother started to see it through her daughter's eyes, that it was artistic" What a load of C%@9! This is a classic case of parent's becoming their children's friends There is time later in life for that, and at her age she still needs a MOTHER (as is obvious by the poses she is selling). I am not promoting chaste behavior, just that a mother needs to be the MOTHER here, and suggest another picture that can still represent her "modeling career" choice. Parents need to be PARENTS and not friends of their children.
Tell the huge lie often enough and to the right person and they will believe it.
How does that saying go? Marry a plain girl and you have a wife for ever, marry a beautiful girl and you will be spying on her forever.
Marriage is overrated anyway... but this little chickie is headed to the Playboy mansion. Now whether that mansion is Hef's or not will be the question.
But this is not anywhere, this is school. And schools have to have standards.
This is why I don't watch The Today Show. They have very little substance except for giving bimbo's like this her 15 pathetic minutes of fame.
Schools have standards??? Like teachers can only have sex with their students on days that end in "y"...????????
This picture is totally unnecessary and inappropriate to put into a high school year book. There is literally no need for it. It may be "artistic" as her mom believes, but for a HIGH SCHOOL year book; no need.
What mother would want her daughter to look like the school slut in her yearbook??? I would completely support my child in almost anything she does, but as a parent you have to be the adult. Letting your child dress like that period is not a very adult thing to do.

Couldn't agree more. I have a daughter and under no circumstances would I let her submit a picture where she looks like hooker to her yearbook. And if those were taken by a professional, I'd have that person up on child porn investigation. Way to be proud of your daughter for wanted to tell the world she's a slut.
OK, this girl wants a modeling career. She lives in a small town in Colorado, so how does she get the exposure (pun intended) she needs to kick start her career. She submits a totally inappropriate photo to the year book knowing full well it will be rejected. Then they threaten to sue the school. Voila, instant publicity!!!! The media love to jump on crap like this and the mom knows this and they are exploiting it to the max. It's a shame that this mother cant be a parent and try to keep her daughter from looking like a prostitute but that 15 minutes of "fame" is worth more than her daughter's reputation. How pathetic!!!
It wasn't so much that the photo was rejected...it was just left too sticky to use after being reviewed by the student committee.
Even in Colorado, there are modeling/talent agencies she can apply to and join, where she'll submit a portfolio and get jobs. What she's done will scuttle any chance of her getting the career she claims to want - except, maybe for "Go-Daddy" next to Danica Patrick or, as others have pointed out, in the porn industry.
Well Said, 100% agree with you.
They are fine for a portfolio but NOT for a high school yearbook. Not even close. I applaud the student committee that voted them down...they have a sense of propriety which is something many young people could learn about. It's not about freedom of expression, it's about what's appropriate! Express yourself any way you want...but there is a time and place for everything.
Ditto!
I agree, For me it's far less about the outfit, more the pose... I've seen some pretty risky outfits in highschool yearbooks, but what make this one particularly provoctive is the pose and facial expression... She's a gorgeous girl and obviously has some talent, but highschool is not VOGUE?
I agree! They are totally inappropriate and I also applaud the student body. These are not what should be in a high school yearbook, either as a senior portrait or even as an ad.
Sidney is a very beautiful girl and I applaud her for pursuing her dream, but the pictures are inappropriate for a high school yearbook. They'd be great for a fashion magazine spread. It is possible for her to take artistic photos that allow her to express herself without dressing provocatively. I understand her mother wants to support her, but she needs to be a parent and teach her daughter the lesson of appropriateness and a time and place for everything. Kudos to the student committee for setting a standard of professionalism and propriety. Please stick to your guns.
I agree, both pictures are totally inappropriate for a high school year book! And what an excuse for such a selfish display and being supported by her mother??? That had nothing to do about "freedom of expression" it was just a statement from a kid saying " it's all about me". I also applaud the student committee that voted them down and wonder why an interview wasn't made of them.
While there's no doubt Sydney is a lovely girl, the photos in my opinion, are not appropriate for a representation of a high school yearbook committee's work. A modeling picture would be okay, yet it is the provocative nature of these particular photos that is in question. If Sydney and her mother decide to spend money to represent themselves through an ad, that's an entirely different scenario, because the yearbook committee are not the one's putting it out there. It puts the entire process at risk for others wanting to follow suit in adding inappropriate photos. It also puts the yearbook in a position of being boycotted by parents who would the purchasers of these yearbooks, in all reality. Yearbooks bring in a lot of financial support for struggling public high schools.
As far as the student committee changing their minds, I think all teenagers need to have 'advisers' to think through their decisions with all of the ramifications that could ensue. A skill all teenagers need in order to understand the concept of cause and effect concerning their choices they will make throughout their life.
Effects imposed on them by those with archaic views, I might add.
You know what it is not your yearbook, Let her classmates decide, put it a vote of the kids. How is that for teaching democracy?
Simple one 3212578 the 'editors' of the year book, ARE her class mates! And THEY did decide!
Next time try 'reading' the article BEFORE shooting off your mouth!
Amy McLain you just saw what kind of mother on the tv.
If she is an aspiring model she would know that she can still submit a beautiful photo that reflects that without it having to be provocative.
OK, tomorrow I start watching another morning show....this ridiculous story about a self-centered teenager and her equally selfish mother is NOT National news....additionally, why not have a story about the millions of young women struggling in today's world, or have one of the hardworking school editors on the show!!! The Today Show is on a race to the bottom..and guess what YOU WON!!
Very well said, nahenahe and so VERY true. Our society's focus is part of the problem!
Ditto nahenahe-malia....please focus news stories on rewarding hardworking everyday people, these two women have succeeded in getting the publicity that they needed to be porn stars or whatever, thanks in part to the Today Show
Good idea have a story on the hardworking, unselfish people, like the yearbook editors that have the values and morals to stand up in a corrupted selfish, "all about me" world
I agree with all three of you.
You should read the comments in their hometown newspaper. Apparently they want attention all the time. They got it thanks to the media. Disgusting. Another wonderful *news* story by NBC. Turned the channel and won't go back this time.
The only time TODAY focuses on "Real" issues are election, natural tragedies, oil and war in oil rich nations. Otherwise it's about holiday decore, celebs, celeb weddings, royals, sex, and sexy teens. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I disagree. One of the problems that plague this country is the decline in moral values. Our children are the future leaders. If they have no pride in themselves, how can we expect them to have pride in their country?
"SELF" gratification is the worst demon around, and is the cause of America's downward spiral. Corporate greed, the Madoff scandal, and others, all sought to satisfy that need at the expense of others, not caring who it hurt.
She is not the only one that attends that school. Why should the others suffer just because she wants to seek out a career, which according to the photos, that's heading towards the porn industry?
The chance is great that this girl and her mother will be on one of the other national morning shows tomorrow. Sometimes interviewees (famous, infamous, and average Joe or Jane) make the rounds of the shows on the same day; other times a day or so appart.
You are being too sensible. To have the one of the editors on to present an opposing viewpoint and a fair discussion is too reasonable. This all goes back to nbc president declared statement to turn nbc into a spokesman for the progressives, i.e. democrats and their politics.
Of course destroying public morals and highlighting this kind of story is right up the democratic philosophy alley. Do not present the opposite side of a story, do not be unbiased. Why didn't the slut dress up in one of her outfits?
We really have to reclaim the airways and the internet. We need an unbiased straight balanced reporting of the news and follow ups.
People have to get together and challenge this monopoly and complain to the government and get the word out. This has really gone too far.
Remember the picture of the black girl who lied her way to Colombia? Well most didn't follow the story back to how she really looks. Msnbc.com showed an old several years old picture of a child with glasses. Seeing her today shows you how old she can really look and what a vixen she is! This picture showing an innocent child who was deliberately deported by Immigration is an attempt by msnbc.com to distort public opinion.
The Today Show is nothing but fluff.
It started in 1952 with Dave Garroway has host and has degenerated into the fluffy nothing it is today.
It's really bad to say but i think they both should change their hair color.Nuff said.
or she could just weave in the fake, more appropriate color?
BOTH of the yearbook pictures are completely inappropriate for a high school yearbook. Both of the pictures are provocative and are too grown up for a CHILD to be portrayed in. Her mother needs to be a MOM and not her friend and put her foot down!! Teach your daughter some class!!
I agree 100% with above comments. And yeah where is the dad? Class??? I see little. It is a me me me society with our young folks it seems. Pictures ARE inappropriate for yearbook. I bet the principal did NOT influence, just asked a few questions (which everyone has a right to do) and ultimately up to yearbook staff. Good for you all for standing up! (Their parents did a great job!) Hmmmm! Who in their right mind would allow their child or support their child of such inappropriateness. Pay the $300 and advertise in Playboy. Seeking inappropriate attention leads me to think "dad" is really not in the picture???? The gal had mentioned about football players, band members, horseback riders with their horses---- give Hugh Hefner a call. Far too much cleavage, thongs- even the guys with their "pant's on the ground" Helllooooooo Yes children has the right to express themselves, but there is a limit! and not to this degree for a YEARBOOK. Shame on mother for not seeing the bigger picture.
So, no one here bothered to actually READ the article? It states that she is 18... That, my friend, is an ADULT. Not, as you put it, "CHILD". Why is it so horrible that all you people have to do in your lives is to bash this poor young woman? Yes, I said WOMAN... She is an adult, she is supposed to be able to make her own decisions. I say SUPPOSED, because, they give her free reign to decide as to what photo she prefers to be in the yearbook, and ten minutes later, she gets denyed... If the decision is NOT up to the student, why dont they hire a professional, and do it like the old days... Stand in line, fix your hair, stand in line some more, say cheese, and voila, thats the picture that you are stuck with... I know I'm not the only one this has happened to. That way, you cant wear anything to the school, to get the picture taken in, that doesnt follow the schools preset guidelines for "being inappropriate". Wow, the level of "I'm better than you", and "You're such a terrible parent" is running rampant in this room... Besides, the yearbook photo is a representation of the actual PERSON, not just who he/she was IN school. Thats why they let the student have their photo taken. As opposed to all the pictures having the same backdrop in the same room. It's about individuality. If all you care about, after school, is horses, then by all means take a photo of you standing next to your pet... If you are all about hunting, on the weekends, then have your yearbook picture taken with you kneeling down next to your trophy buck... Yes, people, YOUR yearbook photo is supposed to represent YOU. I'm assuming they said nothing about "racy" or "descript" pictures, which leads me to believe that this student was well within her right to choose a photograph which she feels describes her personality. Interpretation is up for the imagination of whomever views the photo... If the only thing you people can think about, when you see a purposed yearbook picture of a high school student, is her legs being open, I feel real sorry for you. (and your family) I would hate to know how you feel toward the neighbors daughter... How about the mother? There are too many parents walking around saying that they support their children, when in reality it comes down to "Yes, I will support you, until it makes me look bad"... At least she isn't lying to her child. The mother is being a mother, and the daughter is being herself... Leave this young woman alone. If the editorial group doesn't like it, then they should've outlined the rules and regulations of "submitting your own photo" a little more clearly. I appologize for the rant, but I think it should be up to HER... Thank you.
All I want to say is AMEN!! you have said it all my friend I am a mother of 6 and support all of my children in what ever they do. again Amen I agree with everything you said. let her shine!!
and I think you are right, if it were only her yearbook. but it represents the whole school. It's not just about her. What about the other students? And if you allow this where does it stop? And your right she is a woman as far as age goes. Which makes this even sadder.
So what if SHE is an adult? The yearbook is viewed by CHILDREN!
The photo's were eye catching and MAYBE! that's what people are have a problem with;Classy looking doesn't translate to slut or prostitute or what ever. The girls aspirations and interest fall on modeling and that's Great! And what happened to freedom of expression? Oh and by most state laws and clearly Federal law at the age of 18yrs. by law your and adult. If the students are allowed free expression in they're senior photo then her picture fly's other wise as it was said earlier Same Back-Drop/mug-shot for all!
While the story on the Today show did state she is 18, her mother is a questionable parent for not telling her daughter the follow.
1. The picture with you on the stairs makes you look like a cheap 2 bit hooker presenting your wears.
2. The Second picture you submitted makes you look like a strung out hooker after sex and a few hits of meth or other illicite drug.
I turned 18 the month after school had started my senior year. I also still lived in my mother's house. If she had said you be home at hour x even though I was 18 I was home at hour x. Just because a child turns 18 doesn't mean that they should do everything that is legal at that age and as a good parent her mother should have said "NO" instead of getting bad plastic surgery and giggling like she was drunk on the today show.
No wonder this girl is taking terrible model shots that make her look like next years porn star or hooker.
Ok, frankmartin, first, I'm gonna guess that you are either a dirty old man, or an immature young man. Yes, she is 18, which makes her an adult. However, we are talking about a high school yearbook that also includeds young men & women who are younger than 18 & will also be viewing the yearbook. If she wants to make a portfolio with these pictures, that's up to her, but they certainly do NOT belong in a high school yearbook. To quote you, "Interpretation is up for the imagination of whomever views the photo". Just look at the comments the pic is getting...this young woman may or may not be easy, but that's how her pics portray her (otherwise there would be a bunch of comments saying how "artistic" they are & so far, you are the only one who thinks these photos that "she feels describe her personality" are ok) . As far as the yearbook panel agreeing with her & then changing their minds, maybe an adult did plant the idea that putting the pics in the yearbook was not a good idea, (good call). I'm not sure why it would be illegal for staff to have input as to what goes into the yearbook, but it shouldn't be. You know what they say about "assuming" right? And you really think her mother is being a mother & is right for supporting these photos? That's why the state of the world is what it is today because parents aren't teaching morals anymore, they are teaching self gratification (because that's how a lot of the population is). Don't think about anybody but yourself. I'm guessing that's how you are as well. I certainly hope you are NOT a parent...
Lack of a father is not the reason why there is a decline of values. What about those who come from two parent homes and the parents don't give a damn about them. Just saying.
...Melissa...
I already appologized for the content of my post, in regards to who does not feel the same as me. So, I will start by personally saying I'm sorry to you.
No, I am not old, or young. About average, and thats as far as that goes. I'm 31, have a career, help anyone who needs me (without asking for anything in return...), I keep to myself, pay my bills, and I have one son (age 7). I just dont think anyone should classify themselves as a sheep. Do whatever makes you you. So long as it doesn't go against any laws... When my boy gets older, I'm going to tell him what my father wasn't around to tell me: "Be yourself, If everyone around you doesn't like you, then they don't like you. They don't have to like you, it's not required to be what anyone but you wants you to be. It's okay to be you." If that falls under "self-gratification", then whoops... I call it individuality. If you are cool with blending in with the crowd, then blend. I'm not calling you wrong, I'm just saying it's not always in everyone's best interest... How did I go from making an observation, to feeling the need to try and defend myself anyway??? I'm not trying to impress you, or make you like me. It is what it is. Yes, sometimes I am an "ass". Not just because I assume. Just thought SOMEBODY should back her on her decision, not just her mom... Again, sorry.
Oh come on people she's 18. Get off your high and mighty act.
Melissa, I have to say, the yearbook committee loses a lot of their credibility when they still allow her to pay to have the pictures included. If it really is about the picture being inappropriate for a yearbook or against school dress code, then they shouldn't have allowed her this option. They have really weakened their argument in my opinion.
She may be 18, but yes even tho I was 18 in the middle of my senior year, still living with my dad I still had to follow his rules. He would never have let me put a picture like this in my yearbook let alone even take the pic to begin with. The mother should have had the guts to tell her that this was inappropriate & stuck with it instead of changing her mind, it's great that she's supporting her daughter but like others have said there is an appropriate time/place for this photo & this is not it. She should use the pics for her portfolio if she really is interested in a modeling career, that is where they would be more appropriate. Not for a school yearbook tho that represents a whole school not just her. Besides think of all the younger children who will be viewing the yearbook, some schools also include the elem. children, and I personally don't think that this photo is appropriate enough to be viewed by elem. age children. She could have expressed herself in a better outfit, at least an actual top instead of a scarf/shawl, the skirt itself isnt that bad.
Julie: part of supporting your children is guiding them when they are wrong. Sorry; this young lady is wrong!
@trenches: Right on the money!
@frank:
I understand your position, and you are completely entitled to your opinion; however, it is an opinion that is part of why we have a HUGE problem in our current cultural and educational climate.
Try looking at the big picture. The staff (a group of her peers) said it wasn't appropriate for the formal section of the yearbook (as a high school yearbook adviser, I think it was a very mature decision that is best for the entire student body and this girl's reputation). There are standards for that section and her picture doesn't meet those standards. Remember the senior section of your high school yearbook? Boys in a tuxedo and girls in a formal? Those are the rules. End of story. Why the debate? She was told no. She was given the option of putting the picture in the senior ad section as an alternative.
There is a big difference in celebrating individuality and breaking the rules to get what you want. That line has become quite a bit blurry lately. The adolescent brain isn't fully developed and will serve its ego before it makes a fully rational decision. It is our job to do some of that reasoning for them as they mature.
In terms of the big picture, mom is letting her down in a hugely desperate and prophetic way. Sad really.
Doolottle13: couldn't agree with you more!!! Very well put!
Frank:
I also apologize to you for assuming that you were a dirty old man, and do not owe me an apology. I have no problem with you, I just do NOT agree with your opinion which is the reason we have these blogs...I have no problem with anyone expressing individuality, when it is appropriate & is not harmful to others. And yes, I believe these pics are harmful to her. Just look at the comments these photos are getting...how do you think she feels now? Would you allow your son to pose in a speedo for his senior pics to show his individuality? Or what if you had a daughter, would you really allow her to take pics like that if she were still living at your home? Never will I ever allow either of my daughters to take pics like that as long as they live in my home. At some point, adults/parents have to draw a line & I feel sorry that her mom didn't know when to draw that line. I am all for expressing individuality but I don't believe that a "racy" picture in a high school yearbook (which is viewed by children) is an appropriate time or place to express that individuality & that's where I believe that Mom should have stepped in. Like I said before, I have no idea what type of person this young lady is, but the image she is putting out there & will probably stick with her the rest of her life is not a good start for her. I am certainly not one of those people who "classify themselves as a sheep", but I am a responsible parent & member of society & will do anything & everything to protect my children & teach them MORALS & responsibility. I like what you said about what you will teach your son "Be yourself, If everyone around you doesn't like you, then they don't like you. They don't have to like you, it's not required to be what anyone but you wants you to be. It's okay to be you." This is a wonderful thing to teach your children! But the " Do whatever makes you you. So long as it doesn't go against any laws..." what if what you are doing isn't breaking any laws, but is hurting other people? Is that still ok? Glad we could have some good conversation... hope you have a wonderful day!
OK, she is 18. So what? It shouldn't matter how old she is.
Apparently she is still in school and submitting a picture to the high school yearbook.
Let her express herself after she graduates.
Doesn't anyone realize anymore that schools have to have something called discipline and standards?
Get back to me when the teachers no longer have sex with their students.
You are deflecting.
Why are you bringing that up?
Because some teachers have sex with students, that justifies total anarchy in the schools?
this photo is a 'come f--k me' shot if there ever was one, no wonder we have so many young, beautiful women go missing in this country.
I agree, no wonder girls are getting raped and kidnapped or even KILLED! Expression of oneself is one thing, but this girl took it to far, and I personally think the Mom(if that's what you want to call her) is trying to relive her youth thru her daughter. The world is in bad shape as far as women are concerned, and she and her Mother are promoting sex! Nice look for a streetwalker, but NOT a high school girl. WTG to the yearbook editors to say NO!!!
I agree with Sundown... if you don't want your daughter perceived as a Tramp, dont let the clothes hang in the closet....(its' your house, right??) and teach them Morals, dignity and integrity....
Mom needs to start being a MOTHER and not her daughters BFF... seems like way too much of that in this country these days...
Reminds me of another teenage girl in the news......with no other redeeming qualities. Courtney Stodden. Using your body to gain attention will bring some UNwanted attention, and comments. If the Ford modeling agency doesn't come knocking after all this attention it means only a "modeling" career is possible.
@coolladyrider
I agree that too many young women are pushing their sex appeal and that's all they appear to have all too often.
But your comment on young women going missing is WAY OFF BASE. There are so many young women who are modest, careful, etc and stuff happens to them as well.
The reason these women are going missing is the number of sickos in the world perpetrating crimes against women. It is also proven that sexual assault has nothing to do with sex and it doesn't matter what the woman looks like - how else do you explain sexual assault of 80-year-old women (it happens)
REAL sickos-just as bad as guy who "get off" on teenaged girls!!
Ahh...maybe the 80 year old is hot? That's why.
I just feel that perhaps for a yearbook it should have been done tastefully. Is that really the way she wants to leave her High School Legacy?
She wouldn't know that answer until she looks for a great job or run for office or something on those lines. Thats why they have PARENTS. We're not so dumb (some of us) after all
She has no class, looks like a hooker.
A simple head shot would be fine, she is a very pretty young lady and may have a bright future ahead of her in modeling, not sure why she feels that her yearbook photo needs to make her look like a playboy centerfold.
18? I thought the head shot in the article was the mom. BTW, 17 is the age of consent in Colorado. Larry Flint will be giving her a call soon.
Although they are lovely photos, they ARE very inappropriate for a high school yearbook. If this young lady wants to be a model and pose in this fashion, that is fine. But for a HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK, ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Her mother is trying to relive her youth, she needs to grow up and guide her daughter like a real parent. A high school yearbook simply is not the place for such provocative poses.
This is the very reason generation X is degenerative, authority is far too permissive with them to the point that they think no rules should apply. Without rules there is chaos. Authority needs to change their mindset and get back to being the leaders instead of surrendering to teenage pressure.
Very well said!!!!!! If you dont want your child perceived as a Tramp dont let the clothes they wear hang in the closet....(Its your house, right??) ... and teach them about respect and dignity and integrity... Dont encourage pornography which is borderline what these pictures are...
Exactly!! They both would do well in a bar or on the corner. Kids control the schools any more. You cant touch them or say anything because they will whine and get control. Or sue!
Well said!
The first photo looks like a topless picture with the breasts blacked out. The second resembles an ad for an escort service. Is her mother insane?
I agree , young men and women need our support yes, but these pictures are totally inappropriate for a high school year book. She does look like she is promoting herself as a sex object. Is that really how she wants to be preceived when she finishes 12 long years of education? Supporting our children sometimes means we have to say NO. When she graduates, if she wants to go into PORN, SEX KITTY, whatever, who cares, but I dang sure would not GUIDE my beautiful precious daughter in that DIRECTION.
If her photos are too inappropriate, what about the guy posing shirtless against a wall? double standard for sure....The first one might be too much but the sweetheart muted print is a beautiful shot...
Janet, there is no contest. Many of the shots are inappropriate and if the students cannot see that, then authority needs to step in and edit the book. It's that simple.
Of course a teenager is going to think those images are fine, sexually provocative or not, but they are teenagers for God's sake and not always making the right choices.
His was a paid advertisement wasn't it but I see your point!
Janet, the boy shirtless is on the "AD" pages not school yearbook photo. You missed that part of the interview. Nothing classy about either photo of her. Mother should be ashamed and try to be a mom and not her buddy and Learn to say NO.
Wow Janet, are u a parent of a girl? I think I alreadyknowthe answer
So, since the boy could pose shirtless against a wall for an ad in the back of the book, then, it's okay for the girls to pose shirtless as well? Janet, you are no doubt an idiot! The anotomy of females is different from that of males. The honor and sacredness of a woman's body is in question here. While I know the "women's lib" movement wanted to get rid of their bras and other garments, did you ever get a good look at some of those women? Talk about walking through the ugly forest and running into every branch comes to mind! We should protect our daughters from perceptions by others that place them in a less than honorable light. While, I agree women are the "stronger" sex, I believe when we allow them to become sex objects at such a young age, we're doing them a great disservice!
I believe the article stated that the shirtless boy's photo was also denied, but he like her was offered the same choice to pay to have his pic. posted in the ad section of the yearbook. IMO No double standard there if he was offered the same choice.
It is a school yearbook, not playboy ! What is this bimbo thinking ?
right on, Deborah!
She was thinking she'd get her 15 minutes of fame . . . and the wonderful media gave it to her. She'll be friends with the Kardashians in no time.
I agree. Today Show gave them what they were looking for.....sad. Her mom is a hypocrite for allowing the daughter to choose; then again she' probably been doing it her whole life...it's easier to be a friend than a mom.
It creeps me out the direction the media is pointing their collective arrows. Reality tv produces and promotes sleaze and a "fast fame fast money" mentality that diffuses the "work hard and earn rewards" mentality which lasts a lifetime.
totally agree Deborah. These are playboy pictures not year book pictures.
Advice for her mom "TEACH YOUR DAUGHTER HOW TO MAKE GROWN UP DECISIONS AS HER LIFE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN AND SHE ISN'T GOING TO HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE"
The Today Show is run by idiots! The producer should have never even considered this story!
Just another BIMBO on the making.
By to-days standards it is not really that much revealing but this is not the place to do it anymore than doing it at the alter. A portrait with skilled makeup would have done a far better job. Note; most if not all models are discovered fully dressed and are obviously model material after which they change them or they change themselves and end up not looking as good as they did before. Great shame.
uh Deborah .. Blazer .. what were you thinking !??!?!?!??!?!?!!?!? as long as the clothing is there and there is merit the picture should be allowed
like Deborah...Blazer what are you thinking ?!?!?!??!??!?! if the clothes are there and there is merit the picture[s] should be allowed in the yearbook
like Deborah...Blazer what are you thinking ?!?!?!??!??!?! if the clothes are there and there is merit the picture[s] should be allowed in the yearbook
Stop blowing this way out of proportion, you and everyone else are acting like this is some huge, serious, insane event like a terrorist attack. Relax, it's not like she submitted a pic of her bending over backwards taking a dic* up her as* to her school. Again...chill out.
Come on.....you know that these photos aren't just inappropriate because of the clothing! It's also the provocative posing and "come and get me" eyes. Mom - get a grip! Is this really the way you want your daughter to be perceived? Just because your daughter "wants to spread her wings" doesn't mean it's time for you to stop parenting. Congratulations to the students of Durango High School for having some standards for your yearbook. If you cave on this one, what'll be next.....bathing suit photos??
Oh no! Not someone in a bathing suit! Oh my god! What is this world coming to?????!!!????
Agreed. I am a young parent 25 and have a 2nd child on the way. You shouldn't be saying its ok to act in a manner like this. Its a high school yearbook not a set for maxim
I agree both pictures are inappropriate. I have a daughter that is twenty-two, I would never allow her to have submitted pictures of this nature or would she have wanted to for a year book picture. Be a mom and say NO.
She's 22 and momma still runs her life. get a clue
yes bikinis... ones that are barely there ...most likely if they cave it will come to that. the world isn't getting any better ...I hope schools stick to there guns !!!
Unfortunately, I went to a high school where the yearbook often had inappropriate photos for a school. One year, the yearbook staff overlooked a photo of a girl flicking off the camera...and they put that picture on the COVER! It was crazy.
I was on the yearbook staff one year...and oh my goodness. Someone had the great idea to do a "fashion do's and don'ts" page, and let me tell you, it was AWFUL. Girls were bent over showing their "tramp stamps" in a way that could seem provocative to someone. Boys were shown with their saggy pants and butt cracks. Hip tattoos with visible pubic hair...it was a mess. I tried to reason with the woman in charge of the yearbook, but she saw nothing wrong.
It truly was a disaster. I'm glad that school tries to keep the yearbook school appropriate.
Look America you just cannot manufacture "WhOre biscuit" reality shows and not expect that stuff to rub off a bit on the culture! She may not ever aspire to be a prostitute but she sure can wear the look and the uniform.
